That's pretty damned bad. So why not more upset about this? Well,
I found the text of the bill, saw the Post quoted it accurately, then reread from the start. By the text, Camus, Blaive, and Moore seemed correct, and it also seemed clear the New York Times, the CBC, The Conversation, the Globe and Mail and others buried the lede in coverage of the bill, which twice uses the term “imprisonment for life” and also references two, five and ten year sentences. There’s no way to read the bill and the Canadian coverage especially and conclude anything but that the more extreme provisions were deliberately played down.
The Globe and Mail, for instance, ran an article specifically about the “controversial” criminal provisions, but avoided mentions of “life” or “ten years” and said only that it “includes changes to the Criminal Code to usher in stiffer penalties for hate-related crimes.” A piece on the McGill University website quoted one of its law professors saying “the bill should remove its criminal law provisions, as we don’t have evidence that longer prison sentences lead to safer practices,” but with typical Canadian reserve avoided the neon headline material, i.e. the “imprisonment for life” line.

One is just to illustrate that in the current media environment, there is often now no way to know what the hell you’re dealing with without picking up the telephone. The alleged most reputable media outlets in Canada and the U.S. refused to touch the most sensitive parts of this bill. Again, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that many did so intentionally, among other things because some reference parts of quotes or text but tiptoe around nearby key terms like “life,” “$50,000,” “$20,000,” “will commit,” “continuous communication,” and “so long as the hate speech remains public.” I’m still curious about the “Act of Parliament” clause — Virani insists an “offence motivated by hatred” refers to “criminal” offenses — but there’s no question that most of this law has been aggressively non-reported in the mainstream press, portrayed as just another in the growing jumble of European and anglophile “anti-disinformation” laws like the EU’s Digital Services Act.

When it's so bad you cannot write satire about it...

Just switch Ukraine for Israel and Hamas for Russia, and the rest of the paragraph reads exactly the same. Except, of course, that Trump denied he had put an improper hold on the aid, and President Biden has not.
Just how bad is it for a president to withhold congressionally approved military aid to another country? And to do this to a democratic ally facing an existential war? Why, it is nothing short of an "abuse of power"—or at least that is how then-candidate for President Joe Biden described it in 2020.
Yeah. And the leftists will say "He's still better than Trump!" or some other excuse.
Ok, this is the last thing for tonight
It was a decent day, so I took the morning and went to the range. Which was very nice. Some wind, but not enough to bother with except for the .22.
The load I figured was going to be The Load with that .45-70 is still working well, so I'm sticking with it. Which means I can load enough to make that long-awaited trip to a place where I can try 300 and 400, maybe 500 yards. I ain't Quigley, but I can enjoy trying.
Couple of other ammo/loads were tried just to rough in a new optic, then tried the .22 out to 200. Two problems with that:
One is at 200 yards, with any wind, it's hard for my spotting scope to pick up those tiny holes.
Second is that even mild wind will deflect those light bullets, sometimes quite a bit if it gusts. Wind was mostly light, but got a bit stronger and gustier as the morning progressed. Could get decent hits at 100, and despite the wind was fun trying at 200. One of these days I'll pick up some serious match ammo, scrub the bore thoroughly, and start from scratch with it just to see how it does in this boomstick.
I love .22 rifles. And pistols.

The same boxes that the GSA had been holding and ordered Trump’s team to retrieve ended up being the boxes that contained classified markings, raising questions about whether the Biden administration had set up Trump.
From what I've read, it's very questionable- at the least- that 'Special Counsel' Jack Smith can legally hold that position; now all this starts coming out. I'm hoping for having his ass thrown out, and possibly disbarred for the crap he's been doing(I know, but I have a dream).

As nature continues it's quest to kill me,
I'm resisting.
Allergies. Until about five years ago they rarely bothered me, but starting then, twice a year, they mount major assaults, with smaller skirmishes in between in the summer. Now, add that to my knees having developed tendonitis("If we can't cripple you by going out, we're going to do this!"), and the last couple of weeks have been bad at times. And today I started more of a workout to- hopefully- smooth things out, and that was a bit of a mistake.
I know Nature wins in the end, but she has to be such a bitch beforehand?
Allergies. Until about five years ago they rarely bothered me, but starting then, twice a year, they mount major assaults, with smaller skirmishes in between in the summer. Now, add that to my knees having developed tendonitis("If we can't cripple you by going out, we're going to do this!"), and the last couple of weeks have been bad at times. And today I started more of a workout to- hopefully- smooth things out, and that was a bit of a mistake.

Just or otherwise, there is a very definite perception that District Attorneys would much rather throw the book at someone with no previous criminal history, while the felons and violent thugs get deals.
On the other paw, for a man to be even hinted at any variety of sexual offence, whether it be harassment or outright rape, is to be guilty until proven innocent.

Posts on social media show that the protesters have vandalized a building on campus with anti-Israel messaging. The university estimates damage to property is in the millions.
Over at Columbia, apparently the campus brass decided they'd looked stupid long enough and asked NYPD to clear some of the mess. Which was done.
Well, it's the clowns running these colleges and hiring marxists and other idiots to teach kids to be this way, so hopefully the blowback from this open "Kill the Jews!" from staff and students will wash the bastards out. Probably not, but if there's enough money loss, maybe(that's about all these people will really get upset about).

This must be why Ivy League students, supposedly our “best and brightest,” fail to grasp how the First Amendment actually works. For them, “free speech” means being allowed to occupy/disrupt/scream at whoever, wherever, and whenever. What’s more hilarious, however, is when activists’ tough façades fade away faster than Joe Biden’s train of thought when challenged.
In the near future perhaps their excuses can include screaming “I’M A PROFESSOR!!” when they’re about to be arrested for trespassing, interfering with an arrest, etc.:
There's also that if their feelings are hurt, or they think they can use it as a weapon, they'll scream "TRIGGERED!" and "MICROAGGRESSIONS!", yet they should be free to insult, slander, threaten lives, and physically attack people and that should be allowed. I've been watching a bunch of normally sensible people losing their damn minds
over Kristi Noem's story about killing the dog. You'd think she'd dragged a puppy out of a pet shop and whacked it.
Part of my growing up was in farm and ranch country, and it was simple: a dog that started attacking livestock was put down. Period. A hunting dog that wouldn't/couldn't hunt might well become just a pet or be given to a new home where that's what he'd be, but if it started killing chickens or some other livestock...
I have no idea if she wants to be Veep or not, and bringing this up might well be because, if she were picked, you know the story would come out so she took care of that now.
Reminds me of Rush Limbaugh once having fits because of a program to cull feral cats somewhere, because he couldn't seem to get it through his head that a feral cat is not like his pet.

It has come to my attention

Which brings me to a piece of equipment some of you might find handy, courtesy the Bayou Renaissance Man, they Breakaway Tackle Coaster
which works quite well as a throw lever for variable-power scopes. After reading his piece, next time I needed something from Amazon(I think Tam calls it BezosMart) I ordered a set. I've got one on a scope now, and it works well.
I'm also going to steal from another post of his about a scope, a comment with a way of leveling a scope:
Level the weapon on a convenient work surface with the scope rings loose enough so the scope can be rotated by hand. Hang a plumb line directly behind the rifle by a few feet. Use something beyond the plumb line as a screen--wall, box, whatever. Shine a strong flashlight (100 lumens or so) backwards through the scope. The cross hairs will be projected onto the screen along with the shadow of the plumb line. Align the vertical cross hair with the plumb line shadow.
I'm going to have to give this a try next time I have one to mount.

I will now get to the first of the weekly 'Calm down, there are some nice things in the world' posts
Have I mentioned how sick I am of politicians?
One of my Senators is Lankford, and today, in his monthly "Here's what all I'm doing", on voting for the foreign aid and getting nothing for the border,
This is one of the great challenges of our current political climate. Some people would rather have nothing if they don't get everything they want on an issue. I am a proud conservative, but I also see the national security risk of doing nothing day after day. I worked for months to make some progress closing our wide open borders, rather than just complain about the problem and hope it magically gets better on its own after a press conference. We still have work to do, which is why I was back at it again this week to make progress on closing our open border.
So he voted for it with NOTHING for the border, and we really should shut up about it because it's annoying him. My interpretation.
The FISA bill ...included 50 new limits on the authority, protections for Americans, and consequences on anyone who abuses the law. There were significant new civil liberty protections in the final version, which I supported.
Because the FBI and others have shown SO much concern for the laws that tell them not to violate said laws, and others, and people's rights.
FISA only applies to foreign intelligence. It is illegal to use that authority to spy on Americans, and the new version of the bill includes fines and jail time for any abuse.
Yet the FBI and others were violating that before, and they will again, but "We made new laws about it!" which is supposed to make it all better.

I understand that some people did not want FISA renewed, but as a member of the Intelligence Committee, I am very aware of the importance of learning about terror plots before they happen. We should not ignore the very real threats coming at our nation from foreign terror organizations, even in the past few weeks. We can protect American lives, while also protecting our civil liberties.

This is one of the great challenges of our current political climate. Some people would rather have nothing if they don't get everything they want on an issue. I am a proud conservative, but I also see the national security risk of doing nothing day after day. I worked for months to make some progress closing our wide open borders, rather than just complain about the problem and hope it magically gets better on its own after a press conference. We still have work to do, which is why I was back at it again this week to make progress on closing our open border.
So he voted for it with NOTHING for the border, and we really should shut up about it because it's annoying him. My interpretation.
The FISA bill ...included 50 new limits on the authority, protections for Americans, and consequences on anyone who abuses the law. There were significant new civil liberty protections in the final version, which I supported.
Because the FBI and others have shown SO much concern for the laws that tell them not to violate said laws, and others, and people's rights.
FISA only applies to foreign intelligence. It is illegal to use that authority to spy on Americans, and the new version of the bill includes fines and jail time for any abuse.
Yet the FBI and others were violating that before, and they will again, but "We made new laws about it!" which is supposed to make it all better.

We should not ignore the very real threats coming at our nation from foreign terror organizations, even in the past few weeks. The new head of NPR is upset that people are reading and hearing what she's done

The Department of Justice on Tuesday announced it has reached a $138.7 million settlement deal with victims of the disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar to resolve their claims of wrongdoing against the FBI in its failures to investigate allegations of sexual abuse.

Once finalized, the settlement will resolve 139 tort claims filed against the DOJ and the FBI in 2022 by the long list of athletes and patients who reported abuse by Nassar, including Maggie Nichols, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.
Bad enough, right? Now add this in:
The claims, which in total sought roughly $1 billion in damages, were filed after the department said it was declining to pursue criminal charges against agents whom the DOJ's inspector general found failed to properly investigate allegations of abuse by Nassar.
The watchdog report found the FBI was notified of Nassar's behavior but failed to act for more than 14 months, a period where Nassar is alleged to have abused at least 40 more girls and women.

The victim had to be hospitalized, her scalp stapled back together, and she had to go through a concussion protocol, according to police.

The Daily Mail reported Monday that another 12-year-old female student — remaining anonymous because of her age, like the victim and the thug — made a public statement that "she and two fellow students filled out paperwork explaining what they knew was going to happen if nothing was done and said that she was warned 'watch your back' at lunch."
"You could've stopped it," she said. "It was five hours from when I told you it was going to happen. I don't get how you couldn't have stopped that."
Because they didn't want to risk being called names by someone, much easier to let someone get the crap beat out of them.

Another reason to keep kids out of public schools, or at least

Business Insider's Matt Drange revealed in a recent report about the epidemic of teacher relationships many of the sordid details - including emoji-filled text messages, transcripts from investigations and disciplinary files.
Drange said, the pages 'documented grooming and groping, the sharing of d**k picks and porn, sexualized comments in classrooms, oral sex in bathrooms, and statutory rape,' that in some cases continued for years.
His report highlights a disturbing pattern that 'school administrators across the United States catastrophically failing to prevent abuse,' and there is no federal agency, he said, that tracks teacher sexual misconduct.
Drange said during his investigation, he requested disciplinary records and severance agreements from the ten largest school districts in all 50 states, and license revocations from every state's Department of Education, but his request was met with opposition.
Alabama, Iowa, and Virginia refused to release any records, he said. While other districts, asked to be compensated, in order for the request to be filled.
In his report, he wrote that the Hawaii Department of Education asked for $75,060. The Katy Independent School District in Texas wanted $125,352, and the Lincoln Public Schools in Nebraska invoiced $243,836.
While other districts, he revealed, never provided records, including Alaska's Bering Strait School District. In 2019, the BSSD paid $12.6 million to 13 sex abuse victims involving an instructor at the school.
And a real winner, from the People's Republic of Massachusetts,
Springfield Public Schools in Massachusetts, was another district he cited, that would not release any records and claimed it would be an 'invasion of the teachers' privacy outweighing any possible right of the public to know.'
Which, to suspicious me, sounds like "Go away, we're not admitting anything!"
Throw in this from Chicago. So kids are getting often lousy educations, and may be abused by teachers, and the schools- like in some of the crap that came out about the Edmond school district in Oklahoma- want to hide it or just make it go away.

Speaking of, I found out both my Senators and my Rep. in Congress voted to let the warrantless search crap- with extended powers!- continue for two more years. And, considering these rat bastards, I doubt they'll ever actually try to stop it.
No, I haven't been yelling at them yet. Partly because the urge to tell them exactly what I think of them is so strong, and because they've demonstrated it won't do any good. I now find myself in the situation that voting for these bastards would, in far too many ways, just be voting for the leftists, because said bastards don't have the guts or desire to stand up on really important things like this.
Oh, I'm sure they'll have some "We had to for national security!" excuse for their abandoning that oath to uphold the Constitution, and I've not got the stomach to listen to it right now.
