Well, we know what Leon Panetta's word is worth,
as he's using that oath to uphold and protect the Constitution to wipe his ass with, probably on one of those weekend trips home he feels so bad about.
Panetta said Obama would act pursuant to the War Powers Act if opting for military intervention, but would not promise to secure Congressional approval before taking such action.
“The Constitution indicates that the Commander-in-Chief should act when the American people are in jeopardy,” he said.
Forbes pressed Panetta further, wondering why the administration would give assurances that they would secure the approval of the global community before taking action, but would not do so for Congressional approval.
The administration “would take steps” to seek approval from Congress, Panetta said, if the decision was made that military action was warranted.
“As long as I am secretary, we won’t take any action without the proper authority,” he said.
Except they can call it 'kinetic military action' and say Obama doesn't have to talk to Congress about that. Just like Libya.
Wonderful, isn't it? Some troops do something distasteful and he has fits and wants heads, but when it comes to betraying his oath, THAT'S not a big deal.

By the way, there's liable to be a market in "Screw the module" work in the future. And, somehow, it doesn't surprise me Reid and Boxer are pushing this.

Justice Department officials have known for years that flawed forensic work might have led to the convictions of potentially innocent people nationwide, but prosecutors failed to notify defendants or their attorneys even in many cases they knew were troubled.
Officials started reviewing the cases in the 1990s after reports that sloppy work by examiners at the FBI lab was producing unreliable forensic evidence in court trials. Instead of releasing those findings, they made them available only to the prosecutors in the affected cases, according to documents and interviews with dozens of officials.

George Zimmerman tried to follow Trayvon Martin, which was entirely legal (those who would argue otherwise need to bone up on Florida’s stalking law). After the dispatcher seems to grasp Zimmerman is most likely attempting to run after Martin, he says ““Okay, we don’t need you to do that.”
Zimmermans’ response? He says “Okay,” and seemingly terminates the pursuit. He speaks to the dispatcher from his current stopped location for another 93 seconds.
A minute or so after that, Zimmerman tells the dispatcher, “Oh crap, I don’t want to give that all out. I don’t know where this kid is.”
Zimmerman’s own 911 call strongly suggests that he was not following Trayvon Martin.
I'd imagine, if a judge doesn't crap on the case over the affidavit, the defense is going to have fun with this.
I wonder, if it can be shown the prosecutor knew about this and ignored it, would that count toward prosecutorial misconduct?

Guy bringing his little girl along for the first time, she so excited she was bouncing. Along with comments like "I want my OWN gun!"
Whereas the gun bigots have lies, ignorance(or more lies), and anger.

But such constructs were all necessary for the narrative of a white Germanic-sounding vigilante, who, after uttering racial slurs, executed a little African-American boy, then lied about a fight and injuries, and got off due to a racist police department and by extension a racist America. We don’t know what happened (murder, manslaughter, self-defense?), only that the above narrative did not happen.

No one wishes to remember his derogatory comments about homosexuals, Jews, and Mormons, much less the Tawana Brawley matter in which he lost a defamation case after falsely accusing a state prosecutor of being one of the assailants. He has a nightly MSNBC show where he reports on his earlier daytime heroics; in some sense, he has eclipsed Jesse Jackson as the black community’s premier civil rights leader. I say that without irony but based on the official praise from the country’s leading officials.
Attorney General Eric Holder lauded the defamer of state prosecutors “for your partnership, your friendship, and your tireless efforts to speak out for the voiceless, to stand up for the powerless, and to shine a light on the problems we must solve, and the promises we must fulfill,” and said of the ongoing Trayvon Martin case: “I know that many of you are greatly — and rightly — concerned about the recent shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a young man whose future has been lost to the ages.” Holder’s “lost to the ages” quote bookends the president’s comment that Martin resembled the son he might have had. Whether those editorials will influence the jury pool in Florida no one knows, but I cannot remember a president and attorney general editorializing about a local criminal case before it has even gone to trial. If before the O.J. trial Bill Clinton had said that Nicole Simpson looked like the daughter he might have had, or had Janet Reno said Nicole was lost to the ages, well, fill in the blanks.

If a gang of white American thugs attacked African-Americans, and defended their action on the ground that they were protesting Robert Mugabe’s seizure of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe, the world would laugh at their foolishness even as it condemned their bigotry. This isn’t quite how it works when goons around the world attack Jews and Jewish buildings and defend themselves by saying that they are angered by things the Israeli government has done. Efforts are made to ‘understand’ the perpetrators even as their actions are condemned. Somehow these events are seen as justifying, even requiring tough diplomatic measures against Israel — rather than demanding aggressive programs of civic education aimed at confronting the psychology of hate.
Those canaries better have gas masks, and plans to get the hell out, because I doubt the EUnuchs will do anything about this until far too late. After all, it's only those nasty JOOOOOOS getting hurt.
Man, that's one hell of a test drive.

Tornadoes are sneaky bastards
Authorities said a signal tower for Woodward's tornado sirens was struck by lightning and hit by a tornado early Sunday morning. Police Chief Harvey Rutherford said the tower that was supposed to send a repeating signal to the town's tornado siren system was knocked out.
The other night I mentioned the 1947 twister that hit Woodward; the museum in Norman used to have a display of it and one item really stuck in my mind: it's a brake drum from a car or pickup with a big splinter of oak flooring punched through it. Yes, actually through the metal.

Right now it's thundering a bit and raining, but
it's just a normal spring thunderstorm; All the severe happened yesterday evening/last night and up northwest.
At two different times the cell doing most of the nasty in OK in the evening produced paired funnels, along with a lot of singles and hail and nasty winds; yet they somehow managed to stay out of cities and towns for the most part, until that bleeping thing dropped on Woodward at midnight.

I'm guessing all the warning from the stuff earlier: all three big news stations in OKC had choppers and ground chasers following the cells, and when that kind of crap is going on you tend to stay ready to run, either out of the way or into shelter. At two different times the cell doing most of the nasty in OK in the evening produced paired funnels, along with a lot of singles and hail and nasty winds; yet they somehow managed to stay out of cities and towns for the most part, until that bleeping thing dropped on Woodward at midnight.
Five dead and a bunch of injured, some critical, last I heard, and that's light compared to what it could have been. What it was in 1947. I'm guessing all the warning from the stuff earlier: all three big news stations in OKC had choppers and ground chasers following the cells, and when that kind of crap is going on you tend to stay ready to run, either out of the way or into shelter. Despite the recent spate of shootings on our streets, we pride ourselves
on our strict gun laws. Every time an American gunman goes on a killing
spree, we shake our heads in righteous disbelief at our poor benighted
colonial cousins. Why is it, even after the Virginia Tech massacre, that
Americans still resist calls for more gun controls?
The short answer is that “gun controls” do not work: they are indeed
generally perverse in their effects. Virginia Tech, where 32 students
were shot in April, had a strict gun ban policy and only last year
successfully resisted a legal challenge that would have allowed the
carrying of licensed defensive weapons on campus. It is with a measure
of bitter irony that we recall Thomas Jefferson, founder of the
University of Virginia, recording the words of Cesare Beccaria: “Laws
that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither
inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things
worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather
to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be
attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
One might contrast the Virginia Tech massacre with the assault on
Virginia’s Appalachian Law School in 2002, where three lives were lost
before a student fetched a pistol from his car and apprehended the gunman.
Virginia Tech reinforced the lesson that gun controls are obeyed only by
the law-abiding. New York has “banned” pistols since 1911, and its
fellow murder capitals, Washington DC and Chicago, have similar bans.
One can draw a map of the US, showing the inverse relationship of the
strictness of its gun laws, and levels of violence: all the way down to
Vermont, with no gun laws at all, and the lowest level of armed violence
(one thirteenth that of Britain).

We are so self-congratulatory about our officially disarmed society, and
so dismissive of colonial rednecks, that we have forgotten that within
living memory British citizens could buy any gun – rifle, pistol, or
machinegun – without any licence. When Dr Watson walked the streets of
London with a revolver in his pocket, he was a perfectly ordinary
Victorian or Edwardian. Charlotte Brontë recalled that her curate father
fastened his watch and pocketed his pistol every morning when he got
dressed; Beatrix Potter remarked on a Yorkshire country hotel where only
one of the eight or nine guests was not carrying a revolver; in 1909,
policemen in Tottenham borrowed at least four pistols from passers-by
(and were joined by other armed citizens) when they set off in pursuit
of two anarchists unwise enough to attempt an armed robbery. We now are
shocked that so many ordinary people should have been carrying guns in
the street; the Edwardians were shocked rather by the idea of an armed
robbery.
If armed crime in London in the years before the First World War
amounted to less than 2 per cent of that we suffer today, it was not
simply because society then was more stable. Edwardian Britain was
rocked by a series of massive strikes in which lives were lost and
troops deployed, and suffragette incendiaries, anarchist bombers,
Fenians, and the spectre of a revolutionary general strike made Britain
then arguably a much more turbulent place than it is today. In that
unstable society the impact of the widespread carrying of arms was not
inflammatory, it was deterrent of violence.
As late as 1951, self-defence was the justification of three quarters of
all applications for pistol licences. And in the years 1946-51 armed
robbery, the most significant measure of gun crime, ran at less than two
dozen incidents a year in London; today, in our disarmed society, we
suffer as many every week.
Gun controls disarm only the law-abiding, and leave predators with a
freer hand. Nearly two and a half million people now fall victim to
crimes of violence in Britain every year, more than four every minute:

Every time some UN clown starts lecturing us about all our failings,
this is one of the things I remember:
It was not a tragedy that caught the world by surprise. In January 1994, Romeo Dallaire, a Canadian serving as United Nations Force Commander in Rwanda, warned his bosses about a plan fomenting for Tutsi extermination. Kofi Annan, then the director of UN peacekeeping operations, said they wouldn’t take any actions that would put the UN in the position of having to use force.
Annan would later say they chose that route because letting the involved parties know that “we are monitoring, we are going to deal with you harshly and we know what you are up to” can be “a very good deterrent.”
And EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND DEAD men, women and children later, we see how well that works.
This also speaks to one of the reasons I so despise Bill Clinton:
“It may seem strange to you here, especially the many of you who lost members of your family, but all over the world there were people like me sitting in offices, day after day after day, who did not fully appreciate the depth and the speed with which you were being engulfed by this unimaginable terror,” Clinton said.
However, documents unclassified in 2004 showed that Clinton had decided early on not to intervene and proved that the White House was receiving detailed reports almost daily of the carnage during all three months of the genocide.
The lack of intervention wasn’t due to ignorance about what was happening on the ground. Human lives were weighed by strategic value, of which the administration determined that Rwanda had none.

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater said Wednesday he has fired two of his assistant district attorneys over their actions during a recent murder trial.
He said Pam Kimbrough and Stephanie Miller did not tell defense lawyers about a witness statement that could have been valuable to the defense case. Prater said he has forwarded information from his investigation to the state Attorney General's office for a possible criminal investigation. He also has sent the file to the Oklahoma Bar Association.
Now if we can get some federal prosecutors to have similar ethics with their assistants...

Here's what happened in NW Oklahoma last night
Supercell thunderstorms developed over northwest Oklahoma during the mid-afternoon hours of the 9th and moved southeast through the evening hours. Hail up to softball-size was reported over many areas of Woodward county. In addition, several weak tornadoes occurred near and south of Woodward, OK.

That's right – they want to change the current law to let them create a new training requirement just to buy a firearm. Nothing in law will stop them from forcing you to attend a live session or pay for training for every purchase. This is their goal – to make it so hard to exercise your rights that you will not bother.
It shouldn't be a surprise that this is in the People's Republic of Maryland.

I asked this a while back, and this story
brought the questions back to mind:
The Obama administration is quietly diverting roughly $500 million to the IRS to help implement the president’s healthcare law.
The money is only part of the IRS’s total implementation spending, and it is being provided outside the normal appropriations process. The tax agency is responsible for several key provisions of the new law, including the unpopular individual mandate.
First question was "Hey, IRS: you think people don't care for you now, wait until you show up at their door as the Enforcers For Obamacare; what do you think they'll think of you then?" I guarantee they won't like it.
Other question was "When someone is being told "Your mother/father/wife/ husband can't have the treatment they need to live, because the regulations say they're too old for it to be cost effective. So make them comfortable and wait for the end" it won't be the fat-ass politicians saying it, it'll be some bureaucrat in a local office, and he'll be the one people most associate with this crap; have said bureaucrats thought about how well that's going to go over?"
The other day I read this "Your father's not cost-effective to treat so take him home to die" crap from the British NHS, and posted it on Facebook(I know, but it's a good way to annoy some people). One of the comments from someone I used to think intelligent was "So they were able to pay out of their own pocket and get him treated elsewhere, so what's the problem?" Well, let's see:
People like her have lectured us that Nationalized Health Care will not allow such to happen;
We've been told such decisions won't happen;
We've been told people WON'T HAVE TO pay out of their own pocket because Obamacare will make all well;
As I recall, Obamacare will make it friggin' ILLEGAL for you to do that.

So MSNBC is STILL using the faked quotes from Zimmerman
So the blatant, racially charged distortion of George Zimmerman's 911 call started on NBC 6 Miami on March 19, appearing in two articles by three different writers. It was repeated on March 20 in an article attributed to one of the three writers. The articles have been updated, but the quotes remain. The mis-quote aired on the Today Show on March 22 during a live segment with reporter Lilia Luciano, and again on March 27 with reporter Ron Allen.
For NBC and MSNBC to characterize the error as a single episode caused by a producer's time constraints in getting a video clip ready for live morning television, which just unfortunately happened to be missed by layers of editorial control, is not very convincing.
Only if 'convincing' translates as "They caught us lying and faking news, so let's fire somebody as a sacrifice and hope that makes people stop paying attention." Which we won't.
They're far more willing to give these sorry excuses for reporters benefit of doubt they don't deserve:
While of course I have no way of knowing, it seems to me the botched editing was not an intentional attempt to smear George Zimmerman. I think it was the result of carelessness, inattention and incompetence. What's truly disturbing is that editorial controls at NBC, MSNBC and NBC 6 Miami, all failed to catch the error, not once, but five times. That's nothing short of inexcusable.
No, what's truly disturbing is that NBC and MSNBC flatly set out to falsify a transcript, all those 'editorial controls' passed it on and expected to get away with it. Or, TRULY disturbing, they expected to get caught and didn't care as long as they got the preferred narrative shoved out to people first.
I truly hope Zimmerman sues their asses off. And I think there's plenty of evidence to prove malice on the part of the clowns. He can go after ABC and CNN too for their parts in the railroading.
Said it before: these 'professional journalists' took their reputation and integrity(what was left of it), wiped their ass with it and flushed it. And there needs to be a price paid for that.

A solution to the "What rifle to test the modified ammo?" question Updated
Since I wrote the Acu'rzr post I've been wondering what to test the ammo with, so as to remove as much human(i.e. "my marksmanship") error as possible; I've got a scoped .22 bolt rifle I'd planned on, but had wished I could use the Martini: it's wonderfully accurate, has a forend that'll sit in the rest solid as you can hope for, and I love shooting it. But iron sights only, and I haven't really wanted to drill & tap the barrel for mounts.
Which problem was solved when I was looking in a box for something else and found this mount:
I think I picked this up at Tulsa last spring in a box of stuff*, and flatly did not remember it was there. Until I ran across it and thought
"This is exactly what I needed!" followed by
"Why the BLEEP didn't I remember I had this?"
In any case, it came with two screws that slip through the bottom piece and thread into the upper. Except that this barrel is just wide enough that the screws couldn't fit from one hole to the other. Dug around and found a couple of long #6 machine screws that would fit(no, I haven't trimmed them yet) and some washers, and this locked it in place nicely. And it sits high enough that it clears the front sight, low enough can still get a decent lower cheek/jaw weld. I wouldn't want to use this on something with much recoil, but on a .22- especially one whose weight makes recoil as close to 'nonexistent' as possible- it should work very nicely. If I can make time this week I'll take it to H&H and do some testing/sighting in, all works out it'll only take a few rounds to zero it at 50 yards when I get to that range. Which'll also warm the barrel up for the test shots.
Update: said 'Screw it' and hit the range this morning, just made it part of the great-circle grocery-shopping expedition. The mount worked great(one of those things that you know it should, but you have to find out for certain), the scope should be real close to dead-on at 50 when I can make it out there, and I got to shoot the Martini again.
