In a follow-up memo distributed Wednesday afternoon, Doug Reed, the lead exercise planner for the county’s Emergency Management Agency, said the scenario was only constructed for the purpose of securing Department of Homeland Security Grant funding, which requires the drill simulate a terrorism scenario.

Remember the anthrax attacks?
Ran across this a couple of days ago; long piece on the attacks, the investigation and the conclusions. And the ending sucks. "We think this guy did it, but we have no actual evidence that he did." And since they already had to pay millions to a guy they falsely accused of doing it...
Maybe Ivins did do it; but not only can't they prove it, they don't know it. Not good.

Not summer yet, but we got shark hysteria
Great White Yarmouth is the headline, first two paragraphs

Or it might be one of the other kinds of sharks that eat things that swim.

At the job I used to hold, we went through a long period of parts & replacement shortage combined with 'there ain't enough techs to handle everything in this building and all the other drops in short order', so even more than before trouble calls were classified into 1: they're down or dead and that's it, 2: this is a definite inconvenience but doesn't have to be fixed NOW, and 3: When we can get around to it.
Printers were generally a 2, as you could still run traffic, and if you really needed to print something almost everyone had other printers somewhere in the office or building; put the message on a disk or flash drive and go to it. But some people tended to see any problem of THEIRS as being a 1. A BIG 1. Which led to the call I'm thinking of; coming in toward the end,
"I've got the trouble ticket open, but like I said it'll be at least tomorrow, probably the day after before they can get out there."
"But we're very busy, and I need it fixed tonight!"
"We don't open priority 1 tickets on printers."
"What'm I supposed to do?!?", flash drive, etc. Steadily more unhappy dispatcher. Finally,
"I Want It Fixed Tonight!"
"I want my hair back, but that's not likely to happen either."
There was about three seconds of silence, then he hung up.
I waited about a week to see if my supervisor would wander back and ask "Did you say that? And why?", but he never did, so either the guy didn't bitch or supervisor, who was a pretty good guy, figured out the backstory.

We need to have a balance between public safety and the right to bear arms. Our constitution was designed to protect rights not take away from them. Let me know if I can ever be of service. Thanks for you questions.

I'm real close to despising Unique
The propellant, that is. It's very useful; for a number of cartridges and loads it's the 'go-to' stuff for best accuracy. And they improved it a few years back so it's a lot cleaner-burning. But it's still a pain in the ass.
I have yet to see a powder measure it'll go through and consistently give the same amount. You'll go along and get anywhere from two to a dozen exact measures and then you'll get one(or three, or five) that are light. Not just a touch, mind you, but tenths of a grain off. Occasionally more. And if you keep throwing charges and checking suddenly it'll be exactly on the setting again. And then may give a few that are slightly high.
Pain In The Ass.
Hopefully I'll someday find a way to cause this stuff to meter consistently and precisely, until then it'll continue to be a great big PITA.

The WSP has a rifle that is unaccounted for from our inventory and we cannot discount the possibility that it was stolen. Out of an abundance of caution, we opened a criminal investigation and entered the weapon into the statewide computer system as stolen. As we do in virtually every investigation, we sought information from people we considered knowledgeable, in this case, licensed gun dealers.
Really. Well, here's the letter:
So if they lost track of a rifle, and were just 'seeking information', why the HELL would they ask for all that information? As opposed to, say, "Have you seen this AR15, ser#X, in the past while?"
So, we have two choices: they lost a rifle and somebody panicked and asked for a bunch of information that A: they didn't need and B: was none of their damned business.
Or they went on a fishing expedition to start(or expand?) a database they've got no business having and got caught and this is their excuse. Either way, this looks like hell.

First, a mass-shooting at a school would be a number of things
but a 'disaster' it is not; second, is this really the best background they could think of?
I mean 'best' as in 'factual', not as in 'suits the current administrations and liberals personal bigotries'.
Students were sent home with permission slips to participate in the exercise. One parent whose daughter was slated to participate in the mock drill, after reading the proposed scenario, expressed concern over the scenario and its perceived anti-white, pro-illegal immigrant stance. He was told by the local EMS coordinator in charge that his daughter was no longer allowed to participate in the drill and that she nor her father were allowed to be on site on the day of the drill.

These are the ideas of an Ivy-tower, self-styled elite who have never lived or worked in the real world, a world where only a small portion of the population can live within electric car range of work. Public transportation, by the way, is commonly available only in major metropolitan areas.
The cost of living in major urban areas is far greater than in much of the rest of the nation, and even if Americans were forced to move to urban areas in large numbers, there could not possibly be sufficient available jobs, to say nothing of decent, affordable housing. On the day this post was written, Mr. Obama was visiting the slums of Rio de Janeiro. If Sec. Chu had his way, such slums would surround all American cities and 10% unemployment would be looked upon with fond longing for the good old days. There are very good reasons why every American doesn’t live in an urban setting. For all of his education and apparent intellect, Sec. Chu seems unaware of this--or doesn’t care.

They've changed the header at the Department of Justice homepage. Used to have stars & stripes, now it's black & white with this slogan: The common law is the will of mankind, issuing from the life of the people.
I got curious and dug around and found this is actually almost a year old(and no, I don't know how I missed it). I found this:

Kind of interesting McDonagh considers the idea of fairness or truth to be inconsequential; it's ALL supposed to be about 'empowering' females to lie if they feel like it and get away with it.

A privacy assessment included in the documents for one aspect of the plans that focused on train security suggests that images wouldn’t be tied to any personally identifiable information such as a subject’s name. Any images shared outside the project or used for training purposes would have faces blurred, and employees using the system would be trained to avoid privacy violations, the document says. If the scanners were to adopt privacy enhancements deployed in new versions of the airport full body scanners currently being tested by the TSA, they would also use nondescript outlines of people rather than defined images, only showing items of interest on the subject’s body.

Watching the people who savaged Bush and called his supporters warmongers and so on now faced with watching the Lightbringer doing basically the same thing, only less competently, is too good a pleasure to forego. Sorry. I hope that things will go well, but I agree with Niall Ferguson that Obama’s dithering has cost us. If we had elected a more competent President, we’d have fewer worries. But people got excited about Obama, and, well, this is what you get when you elect an inexperienced guy with no great interest — or any experience — in international relations.

About those $1 LED yard lights
and a suggestion in comments: in an no-electricity emergency have some that you charge during the day and bring in at night. So the other night I brought that one in and turned off all the lights to see how it did.
Better than a candle, more light spread around. The bad thing was that the faceted(?) globe around it broke the light up into vertical bars, good enough to walk around or sit with but I'd hate to have to do any kind of work with it. If you could find some with smooth globes, that'd be much nicer for the purpose.

I'm pretty damn sick of "I don't want to be a hypocrite!" being the excuse
parents use for not laying down rules for their kids and saying 'NO' when called for.
So here we are, the feminist and postfeminist and postpill generation. We somehow survived our own teen and college years (except for those who didn't), and now, with the exception of some Mormons, evangelicals and Orthodox Jews, scads of us don't know how to teach our own sons and daughters not to give away their bodies so readily. We're embarrassed, and we don't want to be, God forbid, hypocrites.
Jennifer Moses, you have a definition problem: if you were telling your daughter not to dress like a hooker and sleep around while you were doing it, THAT would be hypocritical; for you to say "I and people I know made the mistake you're making, and I'm not going to help you make it now" means "I grew up, I learned what a damned mistake that was; so I'm telling you "No, you will NOT go out dressed that way" ."
Few years back I heard one of the periodic "I don't want to be a hypocrite" whines from someone who found out their kid was doing drugs and didn't want to come down on them because they'd used drugs when they were a teenager; they'd realized it was a bad idea, they didn't want to watch their kid screw up the same way but they had the same definition problem. And the current lack of guts that prevents so many parents from laying down the law.

This is one of those scenarios in American politics where the smartest, most intuitive citizens need to force legislation upon the people, even when it is not the popular choice. The leadership roles that Congress and the President have taken oaths to uphold need to make decisions that are blatantly and obviously the correct ones, which will make for a safer country. A safer country, even when many citizens do not have the intellectual abilities to understand that it is the safest choice for them.
Got that? You don't support registration/bans because you're not intellectually capable of understanding what's good for you; so the Smart Peopletm need to force these laws on you.

At the trial, ATF testified that they had ground away welds and replaced most of the gun's internal mechanism to finally get the gun to fire three rounds with a single pull of the trigger.
The whole case is disgusting; that someone who professes to be a lawman of the United States would take part in it is even more so. These people should be fired, and should be personally liable- as well as the agency being liable- for this idiocy.
They actually testified that they had to completely rework the rifle to make it behave as they wanted. And expected that admission to help them get a conviction. These people belong in cells for a few years as well as being sued into oblivion for this.
President Obama yesterday praised Brazil for its new offshore oil industry and said he wants to buy as much oil as possible in this new win-win partnership — although we have piled up $5 trillion in new debt, curtailed new petroleum exploration off shore and in the West, as well as kept Alaska off-limits. Our near-term energy future apparently lies in borrowing money to buy oil from those we praise for drilling where we never would ourselves.

The El Paso Times has a story based on a Wikileaks leaked diplomatic message. It reports that businessmen in Juarez hired eight Zetas for protection, and Zetas got guns from the army in exchange for a truce with the Zetas and promises of assistance against rival cartels:

The free daily said police were tipped off about the illegal shipment when the vessel arrived at Northport from China.

Only antique and war relic firearms would be exempt from this new requirement if they are rendered inoperable or if ammunition for these firearms is not available in the U.S. and not otherwise readily available through other means.

I'm going to have to move to bad language again

The commission says it wants the military to resemble the ethnic makeup of America. It is urging the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force to “validate” the standards — such as education, test scores, criminal records and drug use — that disqualify large numbers of blacks and Hispanics.
“Racial/ethnic minorities are less likely to meet eligibility requirements than are non-Hispanic whites, and that gap is widening,” the report says.
The commission said women should be allowed into male-only land combat units to “create a level playing field” in promotions “for all service members who meet the qualifications.”
Translation: "We don't care about skill, intelligence, ability; we only care about things being properly diverse- by OUR definition- and we don't care what it does to the combat-readiness of the military."
To borrow from Tam:This is ridiculous. The purpose of the armed forces is to kill people and break their stuff. This isn't the frickin' Peace Corps we're running here, it is a warfighting machine. Much like the Los Angeles Lakers, it doesn't get its score at the end of the game graded on a curve based on how well it reflects "the racial, ethnic and gender mix" of America.
These bastards don't want to actually improve schools into places where kids learn, they don't want kids to be taught some self-discipline and HOW to learn, oh no, they want the standards lowered so unqualified people can get into places they shouldn't be. And the miserable shits don't care how many people die because of it.

The New York City Police Department’s License Division is sending letters to handgun license renewal applicants telling them that they may be in violation of New York State’s ban on “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” without telling them that pre-ban magazines are legal to possess.

The letter misstates the law because it omits the crucial language in Penal Law § 265.00(23) that defines a “large capacity ammunition feeding device” as “a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device manufactured after September thirteenth, nineteen hundred ninety-four…” that holds more than ten rounds. In other words, a pre-ban magazine is legal in New York State regardless of its ammunition capacity as it is not considered a “large capacity ammunition feeding device” under the law.
Read most charitably, NYPD’s letter potentially contains only a vague allusion to the distinction between the possession of a pre-ban and a post-ban magazine in option number three, which allows the applicant to “supply a detailed letter setting forth reasons that exempt you from this provision of the Penal Law.” Even that option does not fully make sense since possession of a pre-ban magazine is not an “exemption” from the ban, such as police officers have. A pre-ban magazine is simply beyond the scope of the ban.
One is left to wonder just how much detail is necessary in the response letter. If NYPD is dealing fairly with its licensees, all that should be necessary is a simple statement that the applicant is not in possession of any “large capacity ammunition feeding device,” or — to be more “detailed” — any magazine of over ten-round capacity that was manufactured after September 13, 1994.
Word from one gun shop on Long Island is that New York City licensees are rushing to dispose of their pre-ban magazines, either unaware that their possession is lawful, or simply fearful of dealing with NYPD in light of its warnings of felony charges and non-renewal of licenses.
So either NYPD doesn't know the law or- more likely- wants to scare people into surrendering any 'high-capacity' magazines with no legal authority to do so. And because NYEffin'C is such a hellhole for gun owners and NYPD has such a history of screwing license holders over, they figure they can do this and get away with it. Another bit on LEDs
Had to go to Wally World the other day(it's frikkin' amazing that there are some things they carry that other places don't) and noticed something: solar-charged LED yard lights. Nothing new about that of itself, but these were small 1-lamp units, spike included, for the grand total of $1. Picked up one to try(hey, it's a gadget!) and not bad at all; even on a mostly-cloudy day charges up, and late as I've been up provided a nice white light. For a buck.

The McGill administration is currently investigating Haaris Khan, a McGill student who, using Twitter, threatened to shoot a roomful of other students last week at a campus film screening.
Khan made the threats at a screening of "Indoctrinate U," a documentary, on March 8 hosted by Conservative McGill and Libertarian McGill. "I want to shoot everyone in this room," he tweeted at one point during the film, adding, "I should have brought an M16."

Though Khan has since deactivated his Twitter account, Conservative McGill members, at the suggestion of the Montreal Police Department, took screenshots of his tweets for evidence. Over the span of about an hour and half, during the screening Khan railed against Jews and Zionists in 10 separate tweets.
"I've infiltrated a Zionist meeting," Khan wrote in his first tweet, at 6:04 p.m., shortly after the event began. "I feel like I'm at a Satanist ritual."
"Oh man, a Muslim girl just appeared," he wrote in his next post. "I thought, like me, she's a freedom fighter. Unfortunately, she's a co-conspirator. Traitor."(make that haters of Jews and Muslims who don't want to kill unbelievers)
About half an hour into the screening, Khan's tweets turned violent.
"My blood is boiling," he wrote at 6:38 p.m. "I want to shoot everyone in this room. I'm frightened, alarmed, and downright pissed. Never been this angry."
"This experience has hardened me into a soldier for freedom and truth," Khan wrote about an hour later. He posted his last tweet, about bringing an M16, minutes later.

But at 1:14 p.m. the next day, Khan tweeted, "The jihad begins today."
He insists this was all 'taken out of context', of course, "I don't have a problem with Jews," etc.

The letter says federal officials have reinterpreted the civil-rights laws that require school principals to curb physical bullying, as well as racist and sexist speech, that take place within school boundaries. Under the new interpretation, principals and their schools are legally liable if they fail to curb “harassment” of students, even if it takes place outside the school, on Facebook or in private conversation among a few youths.
“Harassing conduct may take many forms, including verbal acts and name-calling; graphic and written statements, which may include use of cell phones or the Internet… it does not have to include intent to harm, be directed at a specific target, or involve repeated incidents [but] creates a hostile environment … [which can] limit a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by a school,” according to the far-reaching letter, which was completed Oct. 26 by Russlynn Ali, who heads the agency’s civil rights office.
Pissed off yet? If not, this should do it:
Following the discovery of “harassment,” officials may have to require mandatory training of students and their families, according to the Ali letter. “The school may need to provide training or other interventions not only for the perpetrators, but also for the larger school community, to ensure that all students, their families, and school staff can recognize harassment if it recurs and know how to respond… [and] provide additional services to the student who was harassed in order to address the effects of the harassment,” said the letter.
Translation: "If you do not think and speak in the approved manner, we will reeducate you so that you do."

Police also did nothing to clear the walk way for citizens that wanted to sign the petitions. Recall Committee members received many phone calls the following day from Merill area citizens who stated that they showed up to sign the petition, but were too afraid to get out of their vehicles and approach the recall table.
Union cops: they'll protect you IF they decide it's in their contract. And you haven't ticked-off the union.

The TSA has also indicated that it wants to move the perimeter of aviation security screening beyond the airport, to checkpoints on the road, according to Chris Calabrese, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. If these roving searches are tolerated within the terminal and are allowed to jump to the street, there's no telling what might come next. Conceivably, in the near future the TSA could set up roadblocks to randomly screen automobiles anywhere it pleases.
If so, it could prompt further outcries from the traveling public and more comparisons to a police state, say Calabrese and other privacy advocates.

Michael Mann: your ass is grass
I haven't posted on the Globular Warmening people for a while, then tonight I ran across this at WUWT. Which refers to this post, which basically ties a noose around Mann's neck and that of the clowns at Penn State who covered for him.
Sources confirm that a federal inspector has questioned Eugene Wahl and Wahl has confirmed that Mannasked [forwarded] him [a request] to delete emails. Wahl has also informed the inspector that he did delete emails as the result of this request.

Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.
The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.
You don't have enough minorities passing the test? Don't help people prep for it, don't deal with why they couldn't pass, oh no; order the city to accept people who couldn't pass it. That's a friggin' GREAT idea, isn't it?
The word from somebody with a brain and some integrity:
Williams said he understands what the Justice Department is trying to accomplish, but he thinks it’s the wrong method and it’s keeping him from achieving his dream.
“You can’t blame the city for the lack of diversity,” Williams said. “This isn’t your normal 9 to 5 job and you have to want it. I don’t want to be in a department where I was hired because of my skin color. I want it because I earned it.”
