and threatening lives, change the definition of 'violence' so it doesn't cover attempted manslaughter/murder by people you like.

Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) was in Africa this week with a team of Pentagon arms control experts to study security efforts in containing deadly diseases such as ebola and anthrax.

Lugar also noted security lapses such as broken windows and a short wall with a couple of strings of barbed wire attached as all that separated a lab from a slum known as a recruiting ground for al-Qaeda affiliated groups. It is noted in the comments that it is- of course- Bush's fault.



But since that statement, interest rates have actually gone up, backfiring on a Fed chief who wants his quantitative easing to spark inflation of 2 percent annually. A moderate amount of inflation would be considered good for the economy. The problem is that inflation is already running well above a healthy level, investors said, Bernanke is just not looking in the right place, like a Walmart.

“I suspect that when the Chairman thinks about reflation he has a difficult time seeing any other asset besides real estate,” said Jim Iuorio of TJM Institutional Services. “Somehow the Fed thinks that if its not ‘wage driven’ inflation that it is somehow unimportant. Dinner's cooking and I feel like writing

Among other things drooled over until they made me moveseen and admired were

One place had some Dillon RL550 presses for a good price but no cartridge conversions, and while it was tempting I didn't want to lay out that much for a press and then have to order more stuff before I could use it.
I saw a display case with THREE Webley-Fosbery revolvers, one a target model.
Looked over a truly odd .22 revolver; more detail on that later.
I think I walked enough to take care of my exercise for the next few days.
All in all, a fine weekend spent around shooty goodness.

There were fewer people there than last fall, noticeably so. It also seemed- to me- that the prices some people were asking for things were flat-out rediculous(even without that, do you realize how fast you could go through a medium-size lottery prize in that place?) Still, it's a bleeping big show with lots to see. You may be proud of me, I was quite restrained on the spending and came back with most of what I left with; my big buy was this
S&W .32 Hand Ejector. I've wanted one of these or a K32 for a long time, this is the first time I found one A: in good shape and B: affordable. I plan to feed it well.

So that was the weekend. Assuming dinner does not put me to sleep your regularly scheduled ranting about the news will resume later this evening.

Home again, home again, and I'm worn out

Spent the weekend in Tulsa at The World's Biggest Gun Show; I have no idea how far I walked, but it was quite far enough that my ass is dragging and my knees are telling me all about how unhappy they are.

More on this later; right now I need tea, and food, and rest. For now I'll just say "It's the kind of place that makes Japete lose track of the law and the Bradys & Co. very very sad pandas."

I have to start this with a very fine "Because we can!"

The team crafted the aeroplane from sheets and straws of paper, fitted it with a camera and attached it to a helium weather balloon to lift it into the atmosphere.

After drifting 17 miles into space, the balloon exploded, allowing the 3ft wingspan aircraft to soar back to earth while taking pictures of its descent.
That's just bloody wonderful.


It should be remembered that not only did the palisimians stage the death of Mohammed Al Dura, but an awful lot of the major media not only went along with it but was actively hostile to the truth being found out.

Yesterday I got to watch the President of the United States say that the reason most of the country is mad about the Healthcare Bill is because we didn’t get it… That if he could only, somehow, explain it better then we’d suddenly be content and not want it repealed. The ACLU of Pennsylvania recently filed a civil rights lawsuit on behalf of a couple whose newborn baby was kidnapped by Lawrence County Children and Youth Services (LCCYS) because her mother recklessly consumed an "everything" bagel from Dunkin' Donuts the day before the birth. Jameson Hospital, where Isabella Rodriguez was born on April 27, has a policy of testing expectant mothers' urine for illegal drugs and reporting positive results to LCCYS, even without any additional evidence that the baby is in danger of neglect or abuse. LCCYS, in turn, has a policy of seizing such babies from their homes based on nothing more than the test result. Unfortunately for Isabella's parents, Elizabeth Mort and Alex Rodriguez, Jameson sets the cutoff level for its opiate test so low that it can be triggered by poppy seeds, which is why two caseworkers and two Neshannock Township police officers visited their home the day after baby and mother returned from the hospital. LCCYS seized the three-day-old girl and put her in foster care for five days before conceding it had made a mistake.
Read it all; breakables warning in effect. A reflection on the Night of Broken Glass:
Over a period of several weeks in October and November 1938, the Nazi government disarmed the German Jewish population. Ref the court challenges to Obamacare, this is interesting:
The interesting thing about the bill is that it apparently doesn't contain a severability clause, which usually states "notwithstanding any provision of this act being found unconstitutional, the rest of the act shall continue to be in force."

I didn't realize they still wrote laws without that clause. But apparently they did write ObamaCare without that, which means it operates by the old-fashioned default rule that if any part of a law is found to be unconstitutional, the entire law is unconstitutional. (If any one knows, please tell me why you figure they didn't include this provision.)

Of course, this means that if the mandate is found unconstitutional, it's not just that provision that is nullified, but the whole kit and kaboodle.
Oh please. Oh yes. Obama & Co. would flat blow brain cells out their ears. And you know what? It'd be their own damned fault: they were so busy trying to shove this piece of shit through that they didn't even know what all was in it AND WHAT WASN'T.

You’ve elected officials who, for partisan points, spoke openly that the “…war is lost.” I happened to be in a dining facility in Baghdad that day, filled with the (mostly) young faces of (mostly) Army men and women. CNN was on the TVs, and things got very quiet when this elected official continued on, railing that the mission that some of these very people were here to do, had “…failed.” Yet, they would be donning their body armor, strapping on med kits and weapons, mounting HMMVs or MRAPs and heading outside the wire, ensuring that the newborn democracy in Iraq, purchased with so many lives, would be safe another night. The newly re-invigorated insurgents would be waiting, teeth bared back in a hateful smile, gripping the IED detonator, the RPG launcher, or the AK-47s to ply their trade with new energy, because the Senate Majority Leader had said they were winning.

A lot of people have pointed to this piece; go read it if you haven't already. He's pissed at Reid, but he's also pissed at the people who keep this piece of crap in office. And rightly so.

- The health care bill was passed before not after the unpopular financial bill.
- Mitt Romney is not currently running for president.
- We’ve never been a bill like this proposed nationally unless you count Hillarycare.
- Obama was pushing the bill for over a year before democrats rammed it through.
- It was the central focus of his first two years in office.
- They didn’t even read the bill.
- Democrats thought it would be more popular by the midterm election.
- His other emergency economic proposals were complete bombs, too.

Of course, Steve Croft did not bother to question the president about any of his inaccurate statements.
Yeah, because the Stupid Party(for once) not giving him cover makes them responsible for the mess he created. Yeah.

According to the police report, Glickauf went to First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso, 3401 Valparaiso St., to pick up his 5-year-old son from school. He was in his vehicle in the parking lot just before 2:30 p.m. when he decided not to alarm any other parents by walking in with his firearm on his hip. He also did not want to leave a loaded gun unattended in the vehicle.

He ejected the magazine from the gun, ejected the round from the chamber, and reinserted the ejected round back into the magazine, he told police. He then attempted to put the magazine back in the gun but it didn't fit right. Not being familiar with the Smith & Wesson Springfield .40-caliber handgun, although he said it was his personal gun that he also uses for work, "he thought if he pulled the trigger the magazine would seat properly," Glickauf told police.

Instead, the gun fired and the bullet went into his upper left thigh.

We point this out because the excise tax on boats is $10 per thousand of valuation. However, the state caps the assessment on yachts over 60 feet that are less than four years old at $50,000. Which, if you ask us, seems rather foolish . . .

So, the $7 million Isabel, for excise tax purposes, is worth just $50G, meaning, should Kerry decide to pony up, he’d owe just $500 to the island’s tax coffers. Chump change for Jawn and Ta-ray-za!

Anyway, Kerry’s flack Jodi Seth told us the senator hasn’t paid because he hasn’t received a bill. Which is very different from what Kerry said last summer. Back then the story was that the senator would pay all the taxes as if the boat were berthed in Massachusetts.

“Whether owed or not, we intend to pay the equivalent taxes as if the boat’s home port were currently in Massachusetts,” Kerry said at the time. “That payment is being made promptly.”

Apparently not.
Remember: taxes are for little people like us, not important people like Kerry.

Now, the party that has retaken power in Congress may do nothing. At best I fear yesterday's election was a band-aid on a sucking chest wound, and at worst they'll go right back to getting all knotted up in rearranging the "family values" and "law'n'order" deck chairs while the USS Dollar continues to slip beneath the waves... But while I was eating lunch I watched the Brat Prince keep trying to strike his favorite chin-uplifted Mussolini pose, with its haughty "Who farted?" moue of confident disdain, but it wouldn't stick, and his facial expression kept drifting back to one that looked like a man chewing on a cat turd.

Rarely have I felt so warm inside, and yesterday's vote was totally worth it, if for nothing other than seeing that look on the face of "The Won". Sure, it's the politics of schadenfreude, but I'm only human after all.

We're not spending anywhere NEAR enough!", etc. after each section, ending with "WHO could be against 744?" The answer? "A lot of greedy people, Frank."

Do these clowns have any freakin' idea how offensive that is? Standard "If you don't vote for this you're greedy and don't care about the CHILDREEEN!! and SCHOOLS!!!" crap. I'd bet that commercial alone pissed off a lot of people. Screw 'em, we don't trust the education people anywhere near enough to even consider handing them money this way.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup (base recipe)

1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
3/4 cup chicken broth
1 1/2 cup milk
1 cup chopped broccoli
1/2 cup shredded cheddar

Saute the onion in butter until tender
Stir in flour, salt & pepper, cook and stir until smooth and bubbly
Add broth and milk all at once, cook and stir until mixture boils and thickens
Add broccoli. Simmer, stirring constantly, until heated through
Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted

That's the base. She usually(I did) double the amount of cheese; as she says "Why not?" She has also, as I did this time, fried up some chicken and shredded it and then added it same time as the cheese. And if you've got it and it sounds good, you can fry up some bacon, chop it up and dump some on top just before serving. Or into your bowl just before eating. She's also thrown in some sliced mushrooms and garlic with the onion; lots of stuff you can do with it.

In today's "the MSM is worse than you thought possible" news, one media outlet is caught on tape plotting to tie Joe Miller to child molesters, while another "forgets" to run Christine O'Donnell's big 30-minute ad... twice. The day before the election. Reality truly is stranger than fiction sometimes -- if you wrote this kind of media bias into a script people would tell you it was too crazy to believe. And yet it happened.

After the typical caterwauling of the censors of the left, ABCNews has withdrawn the offer, apparently, or at least guaranteed to the lefties that Breitbart will not appear on TV. After ABC claimed he was never to appear on TV -- they claimed he would just be hanging out at the online forum or something -- Breitbart produced an email from them contradicting them.

Three pieces you really ought to read

Part 2:

These events provided ample political cover for the cabinet to declare a state of emergency and suspend the individual liberties guaranteed by the Weimar Constitution. The rights to free speech and free press, free association, and privacy, among others, no longer existed.

What the book doesn't talk about there is that the authority to enact such sweeping powers was codified in the Weimar Constitution in Article 48. Horwitz's reticence on that little detail is perhaps not too surprising, given the fact that Article 48's insertion in the Weimar Constitution was largely the work of Max Weber--the very same Max Weber cited so frequently and so admiringly by Horwitz in explaining why the government must have a monopoly on force. Now here's an interesting case

ATF agent shoots a guy in the Virgin Islands when the agent gets involved in a domestic dispute; feds give him an 'attaboy, back to work' but the VI plans to prosecute him. And the feds, including some politicians, are having fits.

Go take a look. Two interesting bits here: one,
"William Clark is a federal ATF agent who does not have peace officer status under Virgin Islands law and therefore had no authority to enforce law including the domestic violence statutes," said Sara Lezama, a spokeswoman for the Virgin Islands Department of Justice.

As a private citizen, Clark was authorized to carry a gun and use reasonable force to defend himself and others, Lezama said. But Sukow "did not inflict bodily harm on anyone the morning he was shot," she said.
I took a quick look around and found this on VI firearms law:
"A license is required to possess, transport, or carry a firearm. A purchase coupon is issued to a license applicant when the application is approved. The weapon purchased is brought in to the firearms unit of the Virgin Islands Police Department. Information about the weapon is recorded and listed on the license issued to the applicant."
The statement would indicate that Clark had gotten a permit to carry; but if he was a federal agent working in his area he wouldn't need one, would he? Which means he was carrying and acting as a private citizen, as Lezama says. Which would throw out the argument from one of our favorite statists, Sen. Schumer:
"It is well recognized that federal law enforcement officers are immune from state criminal liability for actions that are taken within the scope of their employment as federal officers," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, wrote in a letter to Gov. de Jongh. "That principle... applies with equal force in United States territories."

The Clark prosecution "has the potential to create a chilling effect on the operation of federal law enforcement throughout the United States' territories," Schumer wrote.
Can't have it both ways, Chucky;if he was there on duty he wouldn't need a locally-issued permit to carry, and if he wasn't then he should have no more immunity for his actions than any other citizen. For that matter, the 'immune from state criminal liability' is the kind of bullshit that's helped create the "We are FEDERAL Only Ones" attitude that causes such problems, and a lot of us are heartily sick of it(Horiuchi, etc.). If this guy being prosecuted causes federal agents to pay more attention to local law, I don't really see that as a bad thing.

§ 3–03 Grounds for Denial of Permit. An application for a rifle/shotgun permit may be denied [if] for lack of good moral character or other good cause, pursuant to section 10–303 of the Administrative Code, based on the following reasons:
(a) The applicant has been arrested, indicted or convicted for [any] a crime or violation except minor traffic violations, in any [jurisdiction,] federal, state or local jurisdiction....
(g) The applicant has a history of one or more incidents of domestic violence [note that this doesn’t require a conviction or even a finding by a court by a preponderance of the evidence, just presumably the administrative officials’ own evaluation –EV].
(h) The applicant has a poor driving history, has multiple driver license suspensions or has been declared a scofflaw by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles....
Please note that this is not to deny a carry permit, this is to deny owning a long gun at all.
Further, catch that 'arrested, indicted or convicted for' part? If you've ever been arrested for ANYTHING, indicted for ANYTHING, even if you were never convicted or it was a bad arrest or whatever, THAT is something they think should trash your 2nd Amendment rights forever. Same on the 'domestic violence' crap; 'incidents of' can mean just about anything they want it to.
And POOR DRIVING HISTORY for Deity's sake?

It's not just that the cameras can pick up some guys planting a bomb (and call in an air strike), but can detect suspicious movement of any kind. The terrorists are creatures of habit, and the intelligence software can detect habits.
