Why I despise John McCain, Reason #37
The Arizona Republican threatened
earlier this week to vote against a White House draft resolution unless
President Barack Obama promised greater support to Syria’s rebels.
McCain then expressed support after meeting Obama at the White House.
He now opposes a resolution crafted by
Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Republican Sen. Bob
Corker of Tennessee. It puts a 90-day limit on action and says no
American troops can be sent into Syria.
Asked if he supported it, McCain said, “In its current form, I do not.”

Sounds remarkably like Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike?
If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option.

Some firearms, even if you break them down for cleaning, have one problem: you cannot clean from the breech end, and that makes it hard to clean the chamber(M1 Garand and M1 Carbine for instance; lever-action rifles too). Yeah, the Garand came with a chamber-cleaning brush on the multi-tool; that brush wears out like any other, and replacements aren't common*.
I've seen chamber-cleaning tools for shotguns and rifles that are basically a section of cable with a handle on one end and a ferrule- appropriately threaded- on the other. Other day the idea occurred "Hey, why spend fifteen bucks when I can spend five or six AND a couple of hours time making my own?" So:
Materials bought:
That's two feet of 3/16" cable, vinyl-coated, from Lowe's, and a 12" piece of 1/4"-.049 aluminum tubing from Ace Hardware(which cost the most). I'd prefer brass, but they had no heavy-wall brass in that size, so aluminum it is. The .049 refers to the hole in the center, which is why I bought this: I balanced out "I can center-mark and drill a piece of stock, or buy this ready-to-go piece; for once I'll just buy it."

Cut through the vinyl about 5/8" back from the end, and strip the vinyl off
Cut off a piece of tubing about 1" long, file the cut end square, then clamp it in the vise and use the drill press to hold the tap and thread one end 8x32
The press and all is not necessary; you can easily thread this by hand as long as you have some way to hold the tubing. Just make sure you thread deeply enough that a brush or jag can screw all the way in.
Update: for something with a large chamber, brushes for black powder rifles can be just the thing; say, a .50 or .54-caliber size. I think most of those are threaded10-24 10-32, so choose the thread you need. Or make one of each.

Now fix the things together.
Ideally you'd be able to crimp the tubing onto the cable, but I don't have and couldn't figure out a good way to do that, so I went the easy way: JB Weld. Clean the inside of the tube and the bare cable with brake cleaner, let dry, then mix the JB up. Put some in the tube, more on the cable, insert cable. Wipe the excess off and make sure you didn't put so much in that it gets into the threaded end. Also, do not glue the threaded end to the cable(no, I did not. For once.) I clamped the cable in a vise so this end was vertical, made sure the tubing was centered, and left it to cure.
Here it is today with a brush threaded on
Just to try, I chucked the other end in a cordless drill and tried spinning it that way as well as working it by hand, and it works nicely.
The two feet of cable was less than a buck, the tubing about four. If you don't have one, you'll need a 8x32 tap, or whatever size you need(shotgun brushes have 5/16x27 thread; of course, you can get an adapter to fit them to 8x32 threaded rods), and the JB Weld was about four dollars(and has many uses). If you use 6" of cable that's enough stuff to make four of these and have tubing and JB left over, and if you're careful with it the tap will last a long time.
You could drill a piece of dowel for a handle and glue the cable in, or- if you get really deluxe- get a piece of hex stock and drill it so you've got a end that'll fit right into a cordless driver.
Thus ends the presentation; go thou, and make a mess.

"Are you out of your fucking mind?" from lots of officers who actually believe in that oath. It could- likely would- destroy our military, at the least it would trash trust and honor.
And Congress would really have only two options:
Roll over and announce "We're not going to take any action against this President, no matter what he does." At which point they've demonstrated that they need to be removed from office as soon as possible for breaking THEIR oath, betraying a huge trust placed in them.
Or
File the charges. Impeachment.
The Evil Party leadership would rather set off a nuke in Yellowstone to fire off an eruption than try to rein in Obama. And most of the Stupid Party leadership doesn't have the balls or integrity to do it on their own.
The term 'clusterfuck of Biblical proportions' comes to mind.

In declining to indict the 23-year-old father in the June 9 killing of Jesus Mora Flores, a Lavaca County grand jury reached the same conclusion as investigators and many of the father's neighbors: He was authorized to use deadly force to protect his daughter.
Texas has some problems with cops and prosecutors, just like everywhere else, but can you imagine the reaction if they'd filed against him?
"That sign says I have the right to refuse service to anyone; so get your ass out of here and don't come back" would have been heard more than once, I think.

I've read On Combat and On Killing,
and they're good books. I'd wondered about this part of them, though; turns out there's a LOT of disagreement on the 'most people cannot or will not fight' idea.

One of the interesting aspects of their requirement to develop a new curriculum is that NRA requires that you not call something an NRA class if you’re not following the NRA curriculum. (That was part of the instructor class when I took it years ago.) That effectively means that people just coming into the shooting sports will no longer associate the NRA brand with teaching firearms safety courses.
If you really want to look at an ultra-creepy perspective, this training database means that Maryland will not only have information on gun owners in the state, but they will also be keeping a list of everyone who even learns how to fire a gun.
And just why might they want that, hmmmm?

Pachmayr recoil pads are wonderful. That rifle still recoils solidly with ball, but the pad spreads it out wonderfully. I've got a slip-on pad for my 1903 Springfield, and it's great, but if Springfield stocks didn't cost so much I'd pick one up and put a pad on it, too.

I am so freaking sick of hearing "The officers followed Holy Procedure"

Modification
Few years back I wrote about getting a Mosin-Nagant sniper. I've had a lot of fun shooting it, but it has one drawback: that steel buttplate isn't real shoulder-friendly. With cast-bullet loads, no problem; with ball, problem*.
So over the last couple of days made some changes. The big one
is cutting the stock back a bit and installing a recoil pad.
To ease some minds: no, I did not cut the original stock. I was able to find another stock in good shape and used it; the original is put safely away.
And yes, the stock needs some cleanup; that'll be done after I know no further mods are needed.
Since I had to stretch my position forward a bit for proper distance to the scope on the original, I cut a little more than the thickness of the pad off; puts it just about right. I had a large pad I'd set aside for something(what, you never bought something on sale just in case?), and it worked nicely. Due to the shape of the stock I don't think a medium would've worked; the large I had to cut a fair amount off the toe(hacksaw), but that let me fit it nicely. Used the belt-disc sander to cut it as close to the wood as could, then a sharp file the rest of the way.
Going to a new stock, I also bedded the action using JB Weld and made sure the barrel is free-floated. Didn't take long to do the latter, there were only a couple of places where I had to scrape the barrel channel for clearance, and then not much.
No, no pictures of the process; on the bedding I always get the crap on my hands and other things, so didn't want to get it on the camera, and for the scraping didn't think to until it was done. I know, bad blogger.
Now I need time and weather to cooperate so I can get to the range and try this out.

'Safety measure' my ass
School district officials in San Bernardino County say they will
discontinue a policy that required elementary school students to kneel
down before being dismissed to class.
Principal Dana Carter at Calimesa Elementary School had reportedly instituted the policy, which called for students at various times of the school day to kneel down on one knee and wait for the principal or another administrator to dismiss them, as a safety measure.

“She says that she has to drop down on one knee with her hands at her side, wait for the principal to come out, lift his arms and tell them to go to class,” said the mom.
Hey, have to teach the kids to be proper peasants, and display proper obeisance to the lords, now don't they?

He makes this assertion but fails to tell us what did the influence the people to fight on when all appeared lost in 1940. It wasn't his deputy, the discredited appeaser Neville Chamberlain or that modest little man Clement Attlee.
He also claims that Churchill's famous 'finest hour speech' "lacked impact because people thought that he was drunk".

In his desperation to justify these assertions this professor claims that his research revealed that when Singapore fell to Japan in 1942 one Londoner said that Churchill's rallying speech was "f*****g b******t and a f*****g coverup". The professor doesn't enlighten us on what the other eight million Londoners had to say.
Got to make sure history shows the 'right' history, y'know.
Maybe they should fence off Detroit and relabel it a nature compound?

According to the Ballina Shire Advocate, "over 9,000 guns have been taken off New South Wales (NSW) streets and 3352 people have charged" during previous operations in the last 12 months alone.
NSW police commissioner Andrew Scipione explained: "There is no single source of gun violence... guns have fallen into the hands of organized crime, outlaw motorcycle gangs, mid-level crime groups and petty thieves and the lines are often blurred."
Well, isn't that amazing?
Not ironically, Australia implemented a massive purge of guns in 1996, which included bans on "assault weapons" and other semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. They also didforced
buybacksconfiscations(there, fixed it for you) and then entered into a strict licensing and registration agreement where certain single-shot rifles and similar firearms could be owned but only if the owner provided justification for the possession of such a weapon.

Books
Specifically, Robert E. Howard's books. Conan is his most widely-known character; there's also Kull, and Red Sonja, and Dennis Dorgan, Steve Costigan; historical fiction, fantasy, sword & sorcery.
Only thing I knew of Conan for a long time was the idiot comic books. Then, in 1978, friend and I went to the Fourth World Fantasy Convention. Very memorable for several things, two of them being the guest of honor- Fritz Leiber*- and what he read Saturday night. Robert E. Howard was a central feature of the con, and as part of that Leiber read the first Conan story, The Phoenix on the Sword.
Leiber was a, let's say 'imposing' guy: tall, slim, deep eyes, a mane of white hair, and a resonant voice. Saturday night he stood at the lectern and every light in the hall went out except for the two candelabra behind him and the reading lamp. And he began to read.
Ever listened to someone who has the gift? To me, it was like being in the story, and marvelous. Put a spell on me, it did.
And when we got back from the con, I started finding Howard's stuff and reading it. There was a bookstore I'd found that had a big section of half-price used paperbacks(which is where I discovered Leiber), and in the 70's that meant getting them for anywhere from $.25 to $.75, and I ate them as fast as I could. They're still on a shelf, every one I bought.
What brought this to mind is that the other day a friend mentioned seeing a movie based on another Howard character: Solomon Kane. I'd heard somewhere, sometime, that there was talk of a movie but I'd never known it was made. Having heard, I looked and today blew part of the budget on a disc. Which I'll probably try to watch tomorrow; Sunday at the latest.
And if they screwed it too badly, well, I'll put 'em on my list, I will.

WWII veteran Delbert Benton died Thursday morning after being beaten to death by two black teens in Spokane while waiting outside an Eagles Lodge. The two suspects used “big heavy flashlights” to beat Benton. The suspects are still at large and described as two black teens between the ages of 16 and 19. One suspect is described as heavy set wearing black clothing and the other was wearing a black silk do-rag.
Authorities said the hot dog vendor was standing at the front entrance of the Home Depot in the 10900 block of New Halls Ferry Rd. around 3 p.m. when four shoplifters walked by and swiped his cell phone.
Police said the vendor chased them out of the store, but was struck in the head with a hammer one of the suspects had stolen. The suspects then got in a car and drove away.
The bloodied victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Ah, we have a statement from the RWPP Sharpton:
Rev. Al Sharpton responded Thursday to calls for him to address the Oklahoma murder of Australian student athlete Chris Lane, saying he is not protesting because the killing was not racial and “the system worked.”
Really, you lying bastard? The Martin/Zimmerman case wasn't racial, and the system DID work; until you showed up lying and threatening and helped blow it into a huge mess.
But here it's a dead white guy and two of the murderers black, and one of them had made the kind of comments about whites you would've drooled over if Zimmerman had said ANYTHING like them about blacks, and you have black gang involvement, so there's nothing racial...

Aw, no, no possible problem there, right?

The Daytona Police Department: Serving Themselves To Your Stuff
Unfortunately several of the firearms, including the irreplaceable
Japanese heirloom war trophy, were damaged due to careless storage. The

fact, the Arisaka brought back by the combat vet’s grandfather was

During the hearing, the city failed to offer any evidence of unsound mind, which was their alleged basis for seizing the property, ironically for "safekeeping." Furthermore the city ignored that Sec. 790.17, Florida Statutes, does not grant them any authority to seize or keep property in these circumstances, as affirmed in an opinion published by the Florida Attorney General and courts statewide. The city also ignored the language of the Baker Act itself which prohibits any loss of constitutional rights by individuals who are examined under the Baker Act. The city however claimed that veterans who are suspected of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder should not have their firearms returned to them, deeming them to be of unsound mind, assuming the role of competent medical authority and snubbing the opinion of professionals who actually perform Baker Act evaluations.
Note just how this crap started
The VA has a “vet help line” run under a very lucrative contract. They’ve called it a lot of different names over the years. But it’s really the National Suicide Hotline (the VA doesn’t even have its own number that forwards… they just give out the suicide number as their own). So suicide is the problem vets have got, or at least that’s how the VA and the semi-trained, non-vet payroll patriots who work the line and run the program see it.
So if you call the vet helpline, you might just wind up like “A.B.,” stripped of his guns without due process and thrown into a nuthouse for evaluation. (He didn’t say he was suicidal. He didn’t threaten anybody. But if you call the line, they assume you are, assume you did, and they tell that to your friendly neighborhood police, who come guns drawn, expecting an armed, suicidal nutjob).

The city also ignored the language of the Baker Act itself which prohibits any loss of constitutional rights by individuals who are examined under the Baker Act. The city however claimed that veterans who are suspected of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder should not have their firearms returned to them, deeming them to be of unsound mind, assuming the role of competent medical authority and snubbing the opinion of professionals who actually perform Baker Act evaluations.
Note just how this crap started
The VA has a “vet help line” run under a very lucrative contract. They’ve called it a lot of different names over the years. But it’s really the National Suicide Hotline (the VA doesn’t even have its own number that forwards… they just give out the suicide number as their own). So suicide is the problem vets have got, or at least that’s how the VA and the semi-trained, non-vet payroll patriots who work the line and run the program see it.
So if you call the vet helpline, you might just wind up like “A.B.,” stripped of his guns without due process and thrown into a nuthouse for evaluation. (He didn’t say he was suicidal. He didn’t threaten anybody. But if you call the line, they assume you are, assume you did, and they tell that to your friendly neighborhood police, who come guns drawn, expecting an armed, suicidal nutjob).

Stephen Kloosterman, you pissed off the wrong guy
You've got to read this. Clown asks “Are Bad Jobs Good for the Economy and the People Who Work Them?” and uses a picture of Mike Rowe(of Dirty Jobs fame) in it.
Mr. Rowe has a problem with both the use of his picture and the article.
And tells Kloosterman about it.
In detail.
Just borrowing a couple of bits:
SK – People working odd jobs or doing day labor for money under the table sometimes do so because it’s the only option they have, we wrote.
MR – Agreed. But nowhere do you suggest that having one option is better than having no option. Certainly, these people are struggling, but they have not given up. They have not become wards of the state. They are looking for and in many cases finding a way to get by in a brutal economy. Certainly not ideal, but the Glass-Half Empty Restriction and the Context Clause of the DJCC both prohibit my endorsement of all “one-sided comparisons that fail to illustrate how things could always be much, much worse.”

Chris Lane was murdered as a part of a gang initiation, according to
James Johnson, the father of a boy who was also allegedly targeted by
the three youths accused of killing Mr Lane.
Police have not commented on the claim, though court documents confirm the accused were eventually arrested in front of the boy's home.
And yeah, we do have those gangs here; they're a serious problem.

I doubt it's a misunderstanding; I think it's a demonstration of why they were renamed the Southern Poverty Lie Center.

The CRS, Congress’ non-partisan in-house think tank, compiled 82 deadlines that the Affordable Care Act mandates upon the first three years of its own implementation. Remarkably, it turns out that the White House has missed half of the deadlines legally required by the ACA. And some of those deadlines remain unmet to this day.
For some reason it'd slipped my mind that one of the places to see an active volcano is Japan.
Yeah, I'd imagine the usual suspects would just love for us to 'get over 9/11'.
Mr. Beckel? Fat chance. And screw you.

during the Boston Marathon bombing, where there was a State police
officer…actually there were two officers, they both had identical
helmets, flak jackets, weapons, everything I wore in Iraq, only it was
all blue. The officer on one side had a big patch that said
Massachusetts State Police…the other officer next to him…his patch said
Boston Police.
What we’re doing here, and let’s not
kid about it, we’re building a domestic army and we’re shrinking the

Looks like the Escambia County SO has some real problems
And it'd better deal with the idiots- and the reason they have a badge- soon.
Amid a growing firestorm of criticism, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan tried to offer some answers today after two deputies shot at and injured an unarmed man in his own driveway.
Bad, right? It gets worse.
Meanwhile, Walker and her relatives were still assessing the damage at Walker’s home this morning. In her driveway, her white Lincoln Town Car still sat speckled with several bullet holes. In her carport, 17 shell casings had been found, family members said.
17 rounds fired, by two deputies. And they hit their intended target ONCE.
I will leave further comment on that to you.
On the other incident, after crawling through a window- no warrant, no nothing- and dragging two people out of bed at gunpoint,
She said she and her fiance had been dragged to the hallway and the dogs were in the bedroom when the single deputy returned to the bedroom and shot the dogs.
Really, Deputy Lee, you effing moron? And I'd just love to hear his reason for that, wouldn't you?
But wait! There's MORE!
A sheriff’s report states that there is no video evidence of the incident, and the Sheriff’s Office has declined to provide a reason.
Which sounds like they'd normally have some, but for some magical reason in this case 'no video!' Damn, I wonder why?
