While doing the requisite reading and digestion of material, another troubling revelation casts further doubt on Attorney General Eric Holder’s protestations that he did not learn of Fast and Furious until whichever is the latest time period he claims as the story he’s sticking to. As Gun Rights Examiner reported last January, Holder aide Monty Wilkinson told then-U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis Burke that he’d alerted Holder to the death of agent Brian Terry the same night it happened. Six days later, according to this report, Burke and Wilkinson were corresponding over the recommendation that Holder not announce Fast and Furious at a press conference.

To suggest the AG was still blissfully oblivious about the activities of his command at that time and under those circumstances, and remained that way until happening across mainstream news accounts some months later, strains all semblances of credibility, particularly when considered against the since-corroborated reports that had been compiled by free agents, with no official information resources at their disposal, compared to the unlimited network at his.

Some questions about Sheriff Whetsel and the 2nd Amendment

Here is 1995 internal IACP strategic plan document to undermine or eliminate right to carry legislation. 

The plan was to kill the bills if possible and if not to encumber the legislation with a number of burdensome requirements to deter lawful citizens from obtaining a permit. 

For example, Item 5 on page 6 of the document suggests making it a criminal offense, a felony rather than a misdemeanor, to carry with an expired permit. 

Another example is item #14 on pg 7. Require a separate CCW permit for each individual weapon and limit permit holders to one gun purchase per month.

President Clinton thanked John Whetsel personally in 1994 for his help in passing the Brady and Crime Bills. The “Crime Bill” that Clinton makes reference to is actually ‘The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act’ This was the Act that established a ban on “Assault Weapons” which lasted from 1994 to 2004.

“So it will be less dangerous.” We don’t know that to be the case. The latest barometric pressure associated with Sandy is 960 mb. It is forecast to drop to 937 mb when it is south of NYC (see posting below from 11:40pm CDT). With a pressure that low the winds and surge could be very comparable to a hurricane. It would be an all-time record low for the region, hurricane or not.

...Bloomberg’s idea of a uniquely slow drip-drip-drip surge doesn’t even make logical sense, and has no scientific basis that I’ve heard anyone articulate. Is he high? Has he lost is mind? I am simply stunned and baffled by this ignorant pronouncement, which will cause people to become complacent, and thus endanger lives.

Breaking news on Benghazi: the CIA spokesman, presumably at the direction of CIA director David Petraeus, has put out this statement: “No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. ”

It's been a question as to when/what Petraeus would say something; we have the answer.  And yeah, I think he waited as long as he felt he could to speak; and then said it flatly.

Which lays the responsibility for the failure to authorize right at the feet of Obama, Clinton and Panetta.

Having spent a good bit of time nursing a GLD (ground Laser Designator) in several garden spots around the world, something from the report jumped out at me. One of the former SEALs was actively painting the target. That means that Specter WAS ON STATION! Probably an AC130U. A ground laser designator is not a briefing pointer laser. You do not “paint” a target until the weapons system/designator is synched; which means that the AC130 was on station.

Only two places could have called off the attack at that point; the WH situation command (based on POTUS direction) or AFRICOM commander based on information directly from the target area. If the AC130 never left Sigonella (as Penetta [sic] says) that means that the Predator that was filming the whole thing was armed.

If that SEAL was actively “painting” a target; something was on station to engage! And the decision to stand down goes directly to POTUS!
Which means there was a weapon system right effing there that could have taken out the mortar position. And any other gathering of enemy troops. And High Command refused permission. I wonder just what all else we're eventually going to find out about this?

About that 'bayonets and horses' crack,

I don't think any of the president's handlers ever bothered to inform him of the US Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Pickel Meadow, California. Established in 1951 to help train Marines for the cold weather conditions that they would have to fight in during the Korean War, the MWTC provides training in fighting in high altitude and cold weather conditions. The training it provides is being put to use daily in the "good war" in Afghanistan. 

One of the more interesting courses that the MWTC provides is one on animal packing. It trains Marines as well as soldiers and airmen in the use of pack animals to deliver supplies and carry heavier equipment.

Woods, Doherty and at least two others ignored those orders and made their way to the Consulate which at that point was on fire. Shots were exchanged. The quick reaction force from the CIA annex evacuated those who remained at the Consulate and Sean Smith, who had been killed in the initial attack. They could not find the ambassador and returned to the CIA annex at about midnight. 

At that point, they called again for military support and help because they were taking fire at the CIA safe house, or annex. The request was denied. There were no communications problems at the annex, according those present at the compound. The team was in constant radio contact with their headquarters. In fact, at least one member of the team was on the roof of the annex manning a heavy machine gun when mortars were fired at the CIA compound. The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Specter gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights. The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours -- enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Fox News has also learned that two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday that there was not a clear enough picture of what was occurring on the ground in Benghazi to send help. 
"There's a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on here," Panetta said Thursday. "But the basic principle here ... is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on."

His face was pointed towards me but he would not look me in the eye, his eyes were over my shoulder.”

There are ways to say something like that that convey respect; apparently Clown Biden couldn't manage that.

The administration also plans to decommission and scrap six Ticonderoga-class cruisers, although the vessels have as many as 15 years of service life left (even without further overhauls).

As noted at the Navy-oriented Information Dissemination blog, when the proposed cuts were first outlined in late 2011, the decommissioning plan will take out of service cruisers that can be upgraded with the ballistic missile defense (BMD) package – now a core capability for the Navy – while keeping five cruisers that cannot receive the BMD upgrade.

Read the whole thing, and you'll see why I tend to think it's not 'neglect of the Navy', it's an intentional weakening of it.

One of the places in Libya most awash with such weapons in the most dangerous of hands is Benghazi. It now appears that Stevens was there — on a particularly risky day, with no security to speak of and despite now copiously documented concerns about his own safety and that of his subordinates — for another priority mission: sending arms recovered from the former regime’s stocks to the “opposition” in Syria. As in Libya, the insurgents are known to include al Qaeda and other Shariah-supremacist groups, including none other than Abdelhakim Belhadj.

Fox News has chronicled how the Al Entisar, a Libyan-flagged vessel carrying 400 tons of cargo, docked on Sept. 6 in the Turkish port of Iskenderun. It reportedly supplied both humanitarian assistance and arms — including deadly SA-7 man-portable surface-to-air missiles — apparently destined for Islamists, again including al Qaeda elements, in Syria.

The Post has learned as many as 10 fake gold bars — made up mostly of relatively worthless tungsten — were sold recently to unsuspecting dealers in Manhattan’s Midtown Diamond District.

The price of gold has risen more than 600 percent since January 2000, while the S&P 500 index is down 0.6 percent over the same period.

The 10-oz. gold bars are hugely popular with Main Street investors, and it is not known how many of the fake gold bars were sold to dealers — or if any fake bars were purchased by the public.

It's so nice when things actually work...

That  audio I mentioned the other day?  That was to compare 'Before' and 'After' of a bit of exhaust work on my bike. 

I like the bike.  And I hate ear-hurting loud 'mufflers' and straight pipes*.  But I missed the nice, deep rumble of the Vulcan I used to ride.  So when I ran across this a while back, I decided to try it.  Finally found a used muffler assembly to use(yeah, I wanted to be able to fall back to the originals if this didn't work out) and did the work.  Installed it this morning.  Original sound, well, has been likened to a sewing machine.  Here's modified:

Not actually loud, just a little more volume than the original; but now it has that throaty rumble I missed.  Riding around town a bit, at normal RPM levels, I can honestly say that I can now actually hear the exhaust, where before I mostly heard the engine sounds and the tires on the pavement**.

I think I like it.

Working on some things(story later) and decided I wanted to record some sound effects.  The camera takes video as well as stills, but for just audio I used my mp3 player(this one, bought a little over a year ago), which includes a voice recorder.
That makes amazingly good recordings.
As well as playing music.
And playing video.
And has a FM radio.
Of course, it only has 4gb of storage.[/sarcasm]
And it cost less than $40, with shipping.

I got curious and checked, the newer model has 8gb.  And a bigger screen.
And costs a whole ten bucks more than the old model(also a referb).

A test

Ran across something a while back over at The High Road, a guy tried using engine paint on a .22 revolver to give it a good finish.  Which led to some questions and information.  So, along with something else(that story later) I'm giving something a try on a knife.

Specifically, a bayonet being cleaned up and painted with header paint.  Couple of people mentioned they'd had very good results with it on firearms, which made me wonder how it'd hold up on a blade.  So:

The stuff I picked up said to do a light coat, wait ten minutes, light coat, ten minutes, then a medium coat; can touch in 1 hour, handle in three.  Three hours later,

I looks very nice; practically a 'drinks light' matte black.  Shows a nice smooth surface.

This has to dry for one week, then be baked to fully cure(ceramic in the mix, and no, I don't know how this one works).  So in a week I'll bake it, then start using it for some things and see how the finish holds up.

About that 'non-existent' vote fraud problem,

that reminded me of a non-mechanical boomy failure:
Few years before left the agency I worked for, it was decided that everyone had to attend a class on terrorism: things to watch for, people to notice, that kind of thing.  Of course it included a session on bombs, and one of the subjects brought up was that a lot of common stuff, properly combined, can make an explosive.*

Or improperly.

The guy teaching that part insisted on pulling a lady up front to describe her personal chemistry experiment in the bathroom.  Seems the holidays were approaching, she had family coming and wanted the house spotless, including the toilet(yeah, you probably see where this is going).  So she started with toilet cleaner, added some bleach, added some other stuff, and was shaking some Comet in just prior to scrubbing.  She thought the vapor was dust from the Comet.

When she came to, she was kind of mashed into the wall, the toilet bowl was mostly gone, the family was scared to death and the ambulance was on the way.

Whatever brew of cleaners she put together, the different elements Did Not Play Well Together.  Which led to a couple of days in a hospital, a new toilet and a refurbished bathroom.

Kindly keep in mind the only power–the only power–the government has is the power of coercion. Ultimately, people do what the government tells them because otherwise the government puts them in jail (or fines them. Or makes their lives living h*ll). Now consider that sentence again “We’re going to coerce faith organizations to tell us things possibly told them in confidence and we’re going to coerce local law enforcement into working with us so we can stop violence ‘on the streets.’”  Um… mkay.  Because those groups aren’t trying to stop violence?  Or because everything goes better with government?
Of course it does; that's an unquestionable truth in his mind.
The other:
“But part of it is also going deeper and seeing if we can get into these communities and making sure we catch violent impulses before they occur.”
Keep in mind this is spoken by the leader of what was once quaintly called the free world.  He wants to go “deeper” in the “communities” and catch “violent impulses” BEFORE they occur.

Other night I posted on some of the latest news in the "The politicians don't care how many troops die, and it seems most of the upper-level officers don't, either" category.  I'm a little more rational right now, so:
We've three choices on the politicians: they have no understanding of the damage their idiot demands are causing, they don't care, or they actually want American troops dead.  Considering some of the people in the upper levels of the .gov, I'm certain a few are in the third category, and should be removed from office(preferably through a window or at the end of a rope).  Most are divided between the first two, and also need to be removed from those taxpayer-supplied offices.

Then we have the officers, like the shit-brained admiral in the Breitbart article:

My first thought was someone should have asked "When was the last time your fat ass was in a helicopter or ditch under enemy fire, admiral?  Or were laying wounded unable to be evaced because the chopper couldn't land because they weren't allowed to clear the area of the bad guys?  Do you even give a rats' ass about the lives of the people you command?"  Before or after the kick in the balls would have been acceptable.  I'll stop there because I don't need the blood pressure boost of what else I'd like to have heard said to the bastard.

I tend to think there needs to be two house-cleanings: one of politicians in suits, and one of politicians in uniform.

Observations on the media and their current "What?" moments:
Over the last week, a growing number of pundits, reporters, and Americans have commented on Barack Obama’s “teleprompter” issues in the last debate and his petulant reaction to Mitt Romney’s statements. Over the last forty-eight hours, the American press corp has commented on the lack of substance and the shallowness of the Obama campaign vis-a-vis the Big Bird ad.
These are all conservative critiques of the Obama Administration for the past four years. But each time conservatives raised them, most political reporters dismissed the critiques as partisanship, frivolousness, or racism. Now, the political press is taking on these points as their own as are many Americans suddenly tuned in. The conservative echo chamber talking points about Barack Obama have broken out of the echo chamber and seeped into the American psyche in a way that the Obama camp will have a hard time shutting down. But the damning thing is that many of these points were, for four years, treated dismissively by the American political press only to now be repeated by them.
It is not that suddenly these points underwent a metamorphosis from illegitimate to legitimate. It’s that the political press, like with Benghazi, can no longer tell the American people they did not see what they actually saw. Americans are believing their lying eyes and, in so doing, more and more feel like they’ve been had by a press corp that calls itself objective when it patently is not.

Consider: the chief of police in America’s second-largest city has come to the opinion that certain federal laws are inconvenient for a large number of people living illegally in his city, and that therefore his department must enact policies that “counter federal laws.”


Back over on the east coast, you have Democrat politicians joking about how they'll cheat in the election.

Big part of the problem is the people claiming "I can't get Americans to do the job" often mean "I can't get Americans to do the job for what I can pay illegal aliens to do it.  Which has distorted things enormously.  If the .gov- often at the urging of corrupt business people, desires of socialist politicians, other times out of PC bullcrap- had not allowed so many illegals to come, and stay, etc., we wouldn't have that distortion.

And that doesn't count all the costs of the illegals: how many hospitals have closed because of the costs of being required to treat them?  Welfare and so on?  This isn't simply a few minor offenses, this is the big one of coming here illegally to start with, and all the crap that's followed.

For instance: used to know a guy on the local PD who said flatly that if it weren't for the illegal alien gangs, there'd be 2/3 fewer(maybe more) gang problems in the area; that crap puts an enormous cost on the area: LE, medical, theft, robberies and so forth.

This chief isn't saying 'ignore this law' because he's being caring and sensitive: I think he's doing it because the illegal alien lobby is so big in the region that it's popular, and makes the politicians who suck up to it happy.  Which helps the Chief keep his job, and screw the people actually paying for it.

And, very often now, leaving the state because of it.
