A Mexican drone crashed in El Paso's Lower Valley, sparking a federal investigation and raising questions about why the aircraft was in U.S. airspace.
"We are collecting data about the crash. We don't have the aircraft because it was returned to its owner," said Keith Holloway, spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates aircraft crashes in the United States and in other countries that request its help.
So, loss of control and wandered over the border, or deliberately violating our airspace?

This coming year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on the same day.
It is an ironic juxtaposition of events; one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.

Yesterday had to drive by Penn Square Mall enroute to a place. If you live in the OKC area, you know what that means this time of year: backed-up traffic in the streets around, and Deity help you if you actually want to get into the mall; usually they've got traffic cops directing things to try to keep the street-blocking to a minimum.
Not now. Normal traffic flow on Penn and on NW Highway, and going past I saw lots and lots of empty parking spaces where in EVERY year I can remember for the last 20 or so the place was packed(generally from about a week ago till Christmas).
Lets see, actual unemployment is above 10%, food and gas(and all other oil-related products) prices are up again, people don't know what the hell is going to happen with Obamacare(including what's going to turn up next the bastards in Congress didn't bother to read before voting on)... yeah, consumer confidence is up.
Problem is, it's up that "We're confident we're getting screwed because of the clowns in DC."

Monet Parham: not only is she a nanny-state jackass
she's doing this on taxpayer's dime. AND she's a whiny little bitch:
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group, claims it violates California law for the hamburger chain to make its meals too appealing to kids, thus launching them on a lifelong course to overeating and other health horrors. It's representing an allegedly typical mother of two from Sacramento named Monet Parham. What's Parham's (so to speak) beef? "Because of McDonald's marketing, [her daughter] Maya has frequently pestered Parham into purchasing Happy Meals, thereby spending money on a product she would not otherwise have purchased."

No, she's suing because when she said no, her kids became disagreeable and "pouted" - for which she wants class action status.
A: Hey, dumbass, you ever heard of using the word "No" and just stopping there? You should, you're SUPPOSED to be a parent.
B: This is such a frigging amazing thing on various levels:
"I don't want to have to listen to my kids whine, so I want everybody to be prevented from getting this."
"I'm such a wuss I can't tell my kids "No" and hold to it, so I want McDonald's to pay!"
The- hell with slippery slope, this would be a vertical dropoff- of 'class action status because of whining kids' is so idiotic that if this weren't in Californicated I can't imagine it even getting a hearing.

If their capabilities in those areas have remained rather crude, why expedite production and introduction of CBLB502? Why not spend the money on more pressing homeland security needs?

Specifically, she works on a federally funded program that campaigns to exhort people to eat their vegetables and that sort of thing. The comment:
“Interestingly, her name has been scrubbed from the website of Champions for Change, the Network for a Healthy California. She has given numerous presentations and attended conferences on the importance of eating vegetables and whatnot.
“She presents herself as an ordinary mother. She is not. She is an advocate, and an employee of a California agency tasked with advocating the eating of vegetables. To the extent that Monet Parham-Lee has EVER taken her daughter to a McDonald's, she should have known better.”
But she's suing Evil McDonald's, so it's all fine, right?

According to Die Welt, Venezuela has agreed to allow Iran to establish a military base manned by Iranian missile officers, soldiers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Venezuelan missile officers. In addition, Iran has given permission for the missiles to be used in case of an "emergency". In return, the agreement states that Venezuela can use these facilities for "national needs" – radically increasing the threat to neighbors like Colombia. The German daily claims that according to the agreement, Iranian Shahab 3 (range 1300-1500 km), Scud-B (285-330 km) and Scud-C (300, 500 and 700 km) will be deployed in the proposed base. It says that Iran also pledged to help Venezuela in rocket technology expertise, including intensive training of officers.

And, over the long haul, Caracas and Tehran would expand and improve Mr. Chavez's missile arsenal, adding such systems as the BM-25 (with a range of up to 4,000 km) that are capable of striking U.S. population centers with a nuclear warhead. Iran reportedly acquired the BM-25 from North Korea back in 2006 and has been working to duplicate the technology. Obviously, Tehran would have no qualms about selling the BM-25 to Venezuela, or simply moving its own intermediate range missiles to that joint base described in the Die Welt dispatch.

A note about the S&W Combat Masterpiece Idrooled over and wondered how to run away withgot to shoot the other day: I'd had a .38 along and fired some of my loads through it, Berry's Plated 148-grain wadcutters over a load of Titegroup; very accurate and very clean.
I've been using plated bullets(from Berry's, X-treme or Ranier) in some loads for a few years now; I've had no problems with them, and they definitely leave less mess behind than cast. Depending on your needs/wants, might check into them if you want to handload but want something less expensive than standard jacketed bullets but don't want to mess with casting.
Yes, I still cast a lot of stuff, that fills a number of niches too.

S&W K38 Combat Masterpiece
Tam wrote about the piece here* I had a chance to shoot one today.
Damn.
I want one. This was an earlier model than the above, a 5-screw, and it shot beautifully. Slick action, good sights, far more accurate than I(don't you just hate having to say that?), just couldn't ask for better.
Well, I could ask for my own one. And a K32. But that's asking for more, not better.

The myth that legal guns sales in the United States are responsible for Mexican drug cartel violence took another serious blow last week when an ATF official testified in Congress that only eight percent of weapons recovered in Mexico came through licensed U.S. gun dealers.This figure is far lower than the 90 percent claim made previously as an appeal to reinstate ineffective gun laws that expired in 2004. The claim — still active among the less informed or serially dishonest — officially became myth during congressional testimony last week when Bill McMahon, deputy assistant director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, revealed the eight percent figure, how it was calculated, and where the 90 percent myth arose from.
Of the 100,000 weapons recovered by Mexican authorities, only 18,000 were determined to have been manufactured, sold, or imported from the United States, and of those 18,000, just 7,900 came from sales by licensed gun dealers.

So either TSA doesn't bother to train people about that little 'diplomatic immunity' thing, or the people on the line are too damn stupid to remember it. Sad thing? This may be the only incident in which the TSA clowns involved may actually face some consequence for their actions.
And last, ref that "I'll leave it to Bill" moment,

Friend in Texas sent me 'A Gunny Parable'
Seems a guy cruises thru a stop sign, or whatever, and gets pulled over by a local policeman. Guy hands the cop his driver's license, insurance verification, plus his concealed carry permit.
"Okay, Mr. Smith," the cop says, "I see your CHL permit. Are you carrying today?"
"Yes, I am."
"Well then, better tell me what you got."
Smith says, "Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There's a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I've got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot."
"Okay," the cop says. "Anything else?"
"Yeah, back in the trunk, there's an AR15 and a shotgun. That's about it."
"Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range...?"
"Nope."
"Well then, what are you afraid of...?"
"Not a damn thing..."

Add in some kind of secret agent who murders best friend of said idealist because he discovers something, various planes blowing up, etc. ad nauseum on a major scale.
Just as bad as putting a magazine from a M16 into a dinosaur while it eats somebody and the critter not noticing, just in a different way.

There've been rapes and assaults by 'disaffected North African youths'
for years, now the capital of "We are multicultural(and we'll jail you if you say something wrong about it) Sweden" has its first jihad bombings.
They're so stuck in denial and "We must be properly sensitive" that
TV2 [Denmark] is reporting that the bomber was carrying a rucksack full of nails. Swedish TV is a disgrace — they refuse to say that the killing is related to the bombing. And they won’t say the two explosions were related.
On Swedish TV they actually said that a car containing fireworks caught on fire.
Wonder how much longer that will last?
They had the same kind of luck we had with the Times Square bomber: apparently didn't know how to make the bombs well enough to get the kind of damage they wanted; and how much longer is THAT going to last?

TV2 [Denmark] is reporting that the bomber was carrying a rucksack full of nails. Swedish TV is a disgrace — they refuse to say that the killing is related to the bombing. And they won’t say the two explosions were related.
On Swedish TV they actually said that a car containing fireworks caught on fire.
Wonder how much longer that will last?
They had the same kind of luck we had with the Times Square bomber: apparently didn't know how to make the bombs well enough to get the kind of damage they wanted; and how much longer is THAT going to last?

An acclaimed South African outdoorsman who was leading a kayaking expedition from the source of the White Nile into Congo was dragged from his craft by a crocodile as two Americans watched, horrified. The guide is presumed dead.

I really dislike working on windows
what with the chance of cuts and slices and major hemorrhage and such. But friend had a broken window, so.
Get the old glass out, measure, get the new pane, start to install it and- it's too wide. By maybe 1/4". No, they didn't cut it wrong; I didn't notice that the top rail of the frame had a slot the glass fit into(I plead tired and dumbass), so it didn't need to be as wide as I thought. So back to Lowe's to trim that 1/4", back over, and it slides right in. I had some points left from my own cracked pane, did have to get some glazing compound, but it's all done.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll eat something and fall over.

I'll say that the driver of the royal car needs some retraining: I thought one of the rules was "Somebody tries to make you stop, or approaches the car in such a way, YOU DON'T STOP!"

All I can think of is they guy was either ordered not to move unless 'absolutely necessary', or something of the sort. If so, whoever gave the order should be canned, or sent somewhere he's less likely to cause damage.

This is friggin' incredible; not only that the driver didn't bloody DRIVE, but that this clown was able to do this and not get either decked or shot. Don't care what anybody thinks of the Royal Family, NOBODY should get away with attacks like this on anybody.

A Kane County judge ordered the money returned, but the city has refused.

Nancy Pelosi told us that we needed to pass the ObamaCare bill to find out what was in it, but apparently we needed to pass it to find out what wasn’t in it as well. Thanks to one of the 2800 pages that apparently no one in Congress read before voting on the bill, the new law has drug manufacturers canceling discounts to childrens’ hospitals that helped provide medicine to children suffering from rare diseases. The change will cost these hospitals hundreds of millions of dollars, and will almost certainly curtail access to critical care for children:

“Our audit found that wait times for patients with less serious ailments have been reduced somewhat,” McCarter said. “However, there has been only minimal progress in reducing wait times for patients with more serious conditions.”
Got that? Their target for improvement is not waiting more than 8 bloody hours. Wonderful, isn't it?

I really needed a new jacket,
as my old actually has holes in it, so I stopped by a bike shop to look at what's available. And walked out with a pretty nice one for damn near 2/3 off.
It's good for me on this, but the shop had a lot fewer customers in than in the past, like the traffic at the mall I mentioned the other day.
By the way, if there was ever an argument for not having cable, it's Keith Olberdork; the man is a walking example of idiocy and envy and hate.
On the one hand— Unaffordable Tax breaks for the beneficiaries of the Bush tax cuts, made ever more permanent as they threaten to suck four trillion dollars out of government revenues in the next decade.
Do you by any chance remember the yacht tax? Bunch of clowns who think the way you do decided "Anybody rich enough to buy a yacht ought to pay a big extra tax on it!"; and when the clowns passed the tax, the people who did have the money for such a boat either didn't buy one or bought it somewhere else, and the companies in the US who made the yachts suffered, which means the people who worked there suffered. It didn't bring in any extra money, and it cost jobs and revenue. That you think keeping the tax rates as they currently are is 'sucking four trillion out of revenues' is disgusting- well, not really disgusting, 'idiotic' is a better word. You don't pay any attention to the past, you refuse to learn from it and the envy and hate you display, well, THAT is disgusting(by the way, do you include John Effing Kerry the yacht-tax dodger in your 'sucking money from government' group?)
Except, of course, for the estate tax, what Republicans so happily call, “the death tax.” Which will be reduced from its 2009 levels.

The money given by one dead rich person to some living rich persons, will not be taxed, up to five million dollars. More than five million and it’s 35 percent — which is less than it was under the tax laws of President Bush’s last fiscal year. Sir, you have given undeserved tax breaks —and you have carved them a little more deeply into the stone of law – to rich people, living and dead. And you want me to tell them which Democrat proposed the Estate Tax giveaway?
Olberdork, I realize the chances of you ever reading this are about zero, but I'm going to say this anyway:
This may come as a shock to you, but every effing penny we earn is taxed. And if we invest it, even in a savings account, any earnings are taxed, and everything we buy is taxed, all our life long; that you think not being allowed to rape someone's estate when they die is a 'giveaway' tells me all I need to know about your twisted mind.
Enough. I'm more tired than I was when I got off this morning, and contemplating the scummy mind of Olberdork and the people he speaks for is just too much for my digestion right now.

Just a year after assuming his role at the FCC, Copps made clear that he wasn’t interested in mediating just when necessary. In a 2002 speech, Copps revealed that he was on a crusade against programming that isn’t good for America.

So they started calling manufacturers here in the US and all answered either "We can't do it" or "It'll cost about three times what you want to pay." So they decided to check on foreign makers and contacted a company in- as I recall- Germany, who looked at the specs, quoted a very good price and asked "How many tons do you want?" Years past the restaurant would have been a wait to get seated; last night, "How many? Follow me!" Anybody who says the economy is recovering is a liar or a fool.

I’ve had my share of experiences at smaller non-profit shops that sometimes have board members who like to speak out on their own. If I worked for the other side, I’m pretty sure my head would be dented from banging it against the desk and/or wall after reading Peterson’s comments. Seriously, Peter, if you don’t have a stash of the Montezuma in your desk for a quick chug every time she posts, let me know and I’ll bring you a bottle next time I’m down there.

Anybody else noticed that when gas prices jump we don't hear

Kissing the thoughts of a tranquil evening goodbye, I checked my pepperspray, stepped out of the cruiser, and eased up on the couple.
"Desmond," I greeted the gentleman, "Opal. What's on y'alls minds?"
"Go 'way, Mister Dawg,"said Opal, without turning around, "This don't concern the law none."
"Oh, Sweet Jesus," yelped Desmond, "Mister Dawg, you got to do something!"
Well, hell.
"Opal," I start to say as I ease around to where I can see her hands, "We need to talk...Holy Mary." The anguish in Desmonds voice was quite understandable once I got far enough around the two to notice that Opal had Desmonds schnitzel in both ham-sized fists, and was apparently trying to rip the old boy out by the roots.
I'm here to tell you folks, walking up on that sort of thing without advance warning can make a feller get kind of wobble-legged around the knees.

I am inclined to write a bit more about son's dog
Dogmatyx was his name, he was half beagle and half Irish Wolfhound. And the strangest-looking puppy you ever saw, who grew into a very handsome adult. Smart as hell, friendly, protective, and could catch any critter silly or suicidal enough to get into the yard. Including a large turtle; he crunched up the shell to get to the chewy center(them Wolfhound jaws were something).
The last year or so he'd gotten creaky, but still got around pretty well, and son spent time with him when home on leave. Then a couple of days ago the ex notified me that he'd taken a real turn for the worse; I went over after work, and yeah, it was bad. So it was time. Preparations were made, and she found a vet who made house calls. That last being important because he was hurting enough I didn't want to have to move him any more than necessary.
So yesterday morning went over. Daughter had taken a couple of hours so she could be there as well, and we spent some time with him until the vet arrived. It went about as smoothly and peacefully as such a thing can. Then we buried him in the blue comforter he liked to snooze on.
Bye, guy.

Hewett used his opportunity to offer God a mea culpa for the Trail of Tears: “ … we know some came by forced relocations, against their will. To those we say, ‘We’re sorry for what our foreparents did to your forebears’ … ”
Regarding immigration: “Lord, God, we know that in this our land, some dwell and work, but it has yet to become their land. They’re aliens in our midst; give wisdom and sensitivity to circumstances and compassion to our legislators for these who labor and live among us without appropriate authorization. Lord, God, may Oklahoma become a model for our nation of just, fair, and functional policies of immigration.”

If true, that a) is kinda spineless of these lawmakers, and b) doesn’t make Associate Minister Steele sound like a turn-the-other-cheek sort of Christian. But, if true, it’s also pretty good reporting on KTOK’s part.
Vindictive toward people who don't fall into line, check(spineless politicians, check but on a different list). Just bleepin' wonderful, isn't it?

"Atwood, 29, who didn't deny the affair with Coates, 60, also is married. State officials last week announced plans to award a $10 million-a-year state contract for a new juvenile center to the Ada Youth Academy Authority, which has selected a private operator, Rite of Passage, to run the new center. Rite of Passage earlier this year hired Atwood for consulting work."

Guy, it's been a long time but I have read it; I'm aware of different-shaded hobbits(matter of fact, there's a bit on it in the article, remember?), and it makes no difference. When someone doesn't fit what the job is looking for, to start bitching about Discrimination! and RACISM!! is bullcrap. A Facebook page to gripe about it, yet!

4-year-old Ryan Thomas is developmentally disabled as a result of being 16 weeks premature and has to wear corrective braces. His ankles are malformed and his legs have little or no muscle tone. He only just learned how to walk, briefly, on his own, according to thePhiladelphia Inquirer.
But that didn't seem to matter to the Transportation Security Administration screeners at Philadelphia International airport.

The screener replied that the boy would have to take the braces off and walk through the detector again. When Leona Thomas attempted to walk with Ryan she was told he would have to do it alone.
She tried, calmly, to explain that Ryan could barely walk with the braces, let alone without them, but the compassionless screener was deaf to her pleas, according to the newspaper.

The Thomases eventually complied and Ryan made it through on his own, but Bob immediately asked for a supervisor. The supervisor was less than sympathetic and stood by the screener's actions. A fellow police officer even told Bob Thomas to drop it and go enjoy his vacation.

Eventually, with help from Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Daniel Rubin, the TSA finally responded to the incident saying that the boy never should have had to remove his braces and they would be looking into what went wrong that day in March.
Note the 'with help from the Inquirer columnist' part; why the HELL would it take getting a newspaper involved to get the jackasses in charge of that office to 'respond' to this?
'They'll be looking into it'. Yeah. I'm sure they will. Right.
