One can only judge a policy on its implementation, and although a no-fly zone conceived by a tough-minded Commander in Chief and implemented by Bob Gates might be just the thing, a no-fly zone put into place by the President who brought you vanishing red lines, a botched withdrawal from Iraq, the reset with Russia that wasn’t, repeated groveling apologies for the inevitable accidents of war, and much else, could be a debacle.

A Columbus police officer accidentally wounded a 4-year-old girl in Whitehall on Friday when he fired at a charging dog, police said.
A neighbor and the girl’s uncle identified her as Ava Ellis, who was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where police said she was in stable condition.
The officer was at a house in the 4100 block of Chandler Drive investigating a hit-and-run case about 3:10 p.m., Columbus police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.
As the officer was walking from the home to his patrol car, a woman a few houses away called out to him, saying her sister and the girl’s mother, Andrea Ellis, had cut herself.
The officer was at the doorway when a dog charged at him, Alex-Bouzounis said.
The officer fired once, missing the animal but striking the girl in the right leg. It was unclear whether the girl was hit directly or by a ricochet. The officer has not been identified.
"The dog charged me!" How many times has that come up?

Well, got some testing done...
I forgot that the ammo I took the most of(some Winchester Super-X) doesn't have quite enough oomph to reliably cycle the conversions. Happily, did find a box of Remington Thunderbolt in the bag, and both cycled just fine with that. I'll have to dig out more of the hotter stuff for this.
The 15-22, on the other hand, ate everything. One reason I chose it is that it's only the second .22 semi-auto rifle I've used that would reliably cycle with subsonic ammo, so figured if the CherryBalmz wouldn't quite cut it, it would show up here. So far, so good, put twenty Remington subsonic and twenty Eley Sport through it with no problems other than a couple of the Remingtons needing a second strike to fire. Same with the Winchester a few times in rifle and pistols both.
So, initial result: no functioning problems other than ammo-related. More shooting to go.

Hope to try out the CherryBalmz-lubed stuff tomorrow
Not today, as plumbers are under the house and will be there for a while.
That blob of Black Rifle Balm I put on the plastic? It's been sitting on that desk front ever since; it finally sagged down to about the quarter-inch mark. It'll run a little, but not much.
I was able to get the use of a .22 conversion for a full-size 1911 as well, so I'll try it with the Ma Deuce Juice. And I cleaned the 15-22 for the first time in, well, quite a while, and re-lubed it with the Black Rifle Balm. If you're not familiar with the S&W 15-22, the bolt, recoil spring/guide rod, and rails are installed as a unit; the bolt rides on the rails and never touches the upper receiver. So the only places you lube are the guide rod and the rails, which were given a light coat.
Have to say, while the face of the bolt was fairly cruddy with powder fouling, that was about it. The trigger parts had some, but that just wiped off. Considering there'd been something between 500-1000 rounds through it since it was last cleaned, that's not bad.

Governor Jerry Brown has vetoed "Right to Try" legislation passed by large bipartisan majorities of both houses of the California legislature. In my recent Washington Examiner column on "Right to Try," I noted that 24 states have adopted such measures, championed by the Goldwater Institute, which would allow terminal patients access to medicines certified as safe but not approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. Brown justified his veto on the grounds that the FDA already has a compassionate use policy that allows some patients some access to these drugs. But as the Goldwater Institute points out, that process is incredibly cumbersome and only a small percentage of those in need are able to jump through all its hoops.
So, to Brown, assisted suicide is just peachy, but a state law saying "If you're terminal, you can try this treatment even if not approved" is not. Because... I don't have the damndest idea.

EPA officials on Wednesday, responding to Denver Post queries about the mine, didn’t reveal the spill. On Thursday afternoon, the agency issued a prepared statement saying that, based on neutral acidity and creek flow levels, Crested Butte didn’t close its water intakes.
“Subsequent investigation found no visible plume or signs of significant impacts in downstream locations,” the EPA said.
Translation: "Don't worry, we investigated ourselves again and once again determined all is well."
So: the EPA is spending bleeploads of other peoples money so they can have their own Super-Tactical SWAT Team, like the Department of Education and others with equally zero damned need for such, while they screw with individuals and businesses, contaminate rivers and God knows what all else, and declare themselves innocent of any wrongdoing.

Was told about this stuff, and picked up some to test. Since I know someone who's planning to try out their Black Rifle Balm, I ordered the Ma Deuce Juice, since I like grease for frame rails and such. Fast shipping, ordered it on the 6th and it arrived on the 10th. And they threw in a bottle of the Balm.
Here it is:
Both do have a cherry-like aroma, both the same reddish-pinkish color. The Balm is a very thick oil/thin grease, the Juice a definite grease. Half-ounce bottles. That white pile in front is Lubriplate SFL-0 grease(very good stuff) for comparison. I had to use a screwdriver to get some of the Juice out, so it's a bit smeared.
Holding that plastic pad vertically for more than a minute, the Balm didn't run, it just sagged a little, very slowly; the Juice moved not at all. Put the pad on the angled front of the desk and left it there while typing, after about three minutes the Balm had sagged about 1/8"; unless it thins a lot when heated, it's not going anywhere. The Juice stayed right where it was like a good grease.
Added: it's been sitting at that angle for about ten minutes now, the balm has sagged about 1/4".

Mentioned once before that one of my favorite test beds for lubes is my .22 conversion for the 1911; if the lube doesn't work well, it won't function properly. So I'm going to clean it and the frame to bare metal, lube it up and shoot it; and I'll try both, cleaning thoroughly in between. And I'll decide what other stuff to try it on.
Results to follow, but it'll take a while.

Back to the range subject, big thing was testing some handloads for the .338 using the Hornady FTX 200-graing bullet. Nice day for it; just a light breeze coming down the range. I had four loads: 43.0 grains IMR4895, five in Federal and five in Winchester cases, and 43.0 grains Varget, five Federal and five Winchester, all fired at 100 yards.
Best group: 4895 in Federal cases
Yeah, there are three of them in one ragged hole. Average velocity 2405fps.
Same load in a Winchester case
Nicely centered, not as tight. Only four because that fifth round disappeared in the range box. Somehow and where. Average velocity 2335fps.
With Varget and Federal cases,
I had an earlier load with Varget(42.0 grains) and the Speer bullet do the same vertical stringing with quite tight horizontal spread. That's interesting. Average velocity 2314fps.
And 43.0 Varget in Winchester cases
Possible I was getting a bit fatigued at this point(even with the good recoil pad, this thing does kick a bit), but I think I had a good hold on each. Probably ought to test it again to be sure, but I hate to spend five more of these bullets. Average velocity 2260fps.

The BBC has admitted faking spectacular scenes of a volcano eruption in its new natural history series Patagonia: Earth’s Secret Paradise.
The programme, broadcast in late September, purported to show a “dirty thunderstorm” above the Calbuco volcano in southern Chile, with flashes of lighting within clouds of ash.
The scene was actually created by using footage from two different eruptions four years apart.
And
It is the latest fakery row for the BBC, which came under fire for another of its nature programmes, when the Sir David Attenborough programme Frozen Planet was found to have faked a scene of a polar bear being born in the wild.
Which brings up the eternal question: 'If they're faking these things, what else are they faking?'

Meanwhile, in the multi-culti paradise of Sweden,
It is supposed to be the model multicultural state. But Sweden is facing problems of its own after gangs of immigrants spent a fifth consecutive night rioting in Stockholm.
Officers are battling to keep the capital under control after hundreds of cars were torched, a police station set alight and fire services kept from a major blaze by a stone-throwing mob of youths.
To make matters worse, rioting has now spread to Sweden’s two other major cities, Gothenburg and Malmo.

Lars Bystrom, a Stockholm police spokesman, said: ‘Such fires are mainly lit to lure the police to the scene, who are then attacked.’
He admitted officers have been forced to change their tactics, saying: ‘Now if there is a small fire that is not likely to spread, and there is no risk to life, we will send out a patrol and keep an eye on it from a distance.
‘But we are not going to bring in the fire brigade unless it’s really dangerous.’

An investigation yesterday revealed that practices are being paid up to £11,000 under schemes to reduce referrals to hospitals, some of which involve cutting referrals for suspected cancer.

The schemes appear to fly in the face of a recently announced NHS Cancer Strategy, which promised an 80 per cent increase in tests for cancers, in a bid to improve survival Research by Pulse magazine has revealed nine parts of the country offering such schemes.
Apparently the other parts are offering the "Who is worth saving?" payments.
They include NHS North-East Lincolnshire CCG, which is offering the average practice the equivalent of more than £6,000 to reduce outpatient referrals - including urgent cancer referrals - to the same level as the 25 per cent of practices with the lowest referral rates in 2014/15.
I repeat: wonderful, isn't it, what we have to look forward to?
Of course, it's insisted that this isn't a REAL problem...
A spokeswoman insisted that the figures quoted were the absolute maximum a practice could earn, and that in order to show significant improvements, they would have to completely overhaul how patients were managed.
"It's not a real problem, that's just the MAXIMUM a practice can earn for leaving people to a miserable death."
Dame Barbara Hakin, national director for commissioning operations at NHS England, said: "The number of patients referred to hospital for urgent cancer checks is up by over 600,000 over the past five years, and we now want it to go up even more, so as to diagnose suspected cancers earlier.
Assuming the number quoted is correct, and the intent, why the hell pay doctors NOT to refer patients?
"NICE has set out evidence based guidelines for when patients should be referred, and no CCG incentive scheme should in anyway cut across that. We are in touch with each of the CCGs mentioned to ensure that this is very clearly communicated to all practices.”
