And who's going to be enforcing this "ban?" Especially in light of the failure of every other gun ordinance in Chicago that fails to withstand court challenges?

We're rapidly approaching a point where Officers are going to be called upon to make choices. Choices that can (and will) lead to loss of personal assets, loss of jobs, or even worse when people decide they aren't turning in their guns peacefully.

And in those cases, we aren't going to say that the citizens are in the wrong.

moving on from hats to shoes:
Without going into specifics, have a problem with one foot.  Yes, finally went to doc; "Try this orthotic, if it doesn't help we'll try another(far more expensive) one", etc.  First didn't help, and I didn't really like the idea of another copay and another orthotic cost, over and over.

About a month ago was in Academy(before they decided to wuss-out on EBRs) and found they had the previous model Skele-Toes shoes on sale; they're one of the 'minimal' running shoes*, with toes.  I've had several people tell me they'd helped with their foot troubles, and figured at worst I'd have a pair of shoes to wear in the yard & garden.

Well, they do help; no idea why.  No padding, just the sole to protect the foot and light upper to keep the sole in place.  They do take a little getting used to, but that didn't take long.  Bad thing for this time of year: they are NOT warm, so have mostly worn them around the house and indoors, outdoors when it's not too cold.  Weird thing is riding a bicycle; feels a LOT like being barefoot, which was kind of weird.  They do tend to slip more on the pedals than standard soles(or bare feet).

So, for what it's worth, they work for me.


*I still want to know, since the damn things are minimal and don't have all the fancy padding and crap, why do they cost so much?

If we observe gun violence as a “disease,” one thing is strikingly clear – this disease never strikes people known to be or potentially armed! It may be true that the recent Connecticut shooter was mentally ill, but he was not so crazy as to take on a police station. No, they invariably pick gun-free zones for their mayhem. And when confronted with an armed counterforce, they either surrender or shoot themselves. They do not wage gun battles against other armed people.

So, using the logic of Edward Jenner, the inoculation to prevent the disease of gun violence is putting guns into the hands of potential victims. So thinking like Edward Jenner, lets see what happens when we do just that – arm citizens by permitting concealed carrying of firearms.

It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

In their “compassion" they will sometimes “concede” a “buy-back” of firearms they want confiscated. You can’t “buy back” something that was not yours to begin with. Headgear; brought to mind because it's raining,

it's January and it's above freezing(God's being nice to us).

I started wearing hats a few years back:
Glare bothers my eyes more than it used to, and
I hate getting rain or snow on my glasses.
Caps work for glare and(mostly) for rain, but if the stuff is blowing from the side, a little more all-round coverage is nice.  I've got a good boonie hat, but sometimes want something not quite so 'ready to dive into the bushes'; my old cowboy hat is getting pretty beat-up and floppy(anyone know how to stiffen felt?), so I wanted something that would be a bit more presentable.  Know what I wanted?

A fedora.

Just because.  I like the way they look.  And Indy Jones wore one, along with Bogey and various others.  So I started looking around, and discovered something:
Do you know what good fur felt hats cost nowadays?  Damn.

So the search commenced, and I happened across wool felt that didn't cut it, and fur felt that wasn't affordable, and then happened across US Wings who had this in the adventure section.  Yes, it's got a Raiders pin on the hatband; I don't care.  It's a good-quality fur felt, it holds its shape, it keeps the wet off my head and it looks good.  And I could afford it.  Therefore, the hat.

Slightly damp as I was outside with the dogs.

Things I've learned since I started wearing it regularly:
You get used to it fast.
Does a wonderful job of keeping the wet off.
It's nice to have a soft brush to clean the dust off.
You understand why, in old movies, you had hat-check girls and coat & hat racks.
Around here you see fewer cowboy hats than you used to; even fewer of these.
It goes as well with my duster(best raincoat I've ever had) as the cowboy hat.
It stays on in the wind better than you'd think.
And you really learn the difference between a decent- or good-quality hat and the synthetic felt crap you see hipster assholes* wearing.

And yes, I have used it with my leather jacket(and belt & holster, and whip, and bag) for Halloween.

I’m not one of the knee-jerk pro-gun types who oppose all laws. I don’t think of gun ownership as the highest form of patriotism. Show me a law on law-abiding gun owners that will have a meaningful impact on gun violence, and I’m all ears.

But that’s not what the White House is offering. In the face of undeniable evidence that, for 20 years, gun ownership rates have gone up while gun deaths have plunged (the lowest since at least 1981, according to FactCheck.org), Obama’s pushing for a large-scale “punish-all-gun-owners” approach.


Gee, why would we think these people dream of confiscation?  Oh yeah:
 “We need to get them off the streets — illegally — and even if you have them, I think we need to start taking them,” Muhlbauer told the Daily Times Herald. “We can’t have those out there. Because if they’re out there they’re just going to get circulated around to the wrong people. Those guns should not be in the public’s hands. There are just too many guns.”

So if you on an old semi-auto .22 or shotgun or rifle, Muhlbauer has decided that you don't need that, can't be trusted with it, and the government should come for it.  And you, if you object.

One truly effed-up disaster response on the federal level, but hold Obama to the fire the way the media did Bush?

Boston Police plan to contact authorities investigating the alleged Columbine-style attack plot at Marshfield High School to determine if a gun that one suspect allegedly showed to another student was a .40-caliber handgun issued by Boston Police.

A female student told Marshfield Police that Joseph T. Nee, one of the two suspects in the case, pulled what she thought was a black, .40-caliber handgun from his waistband as she was getting off a school bus this past spring and told her "how the school was going to be shot up," John P. McLaughlin, an assistant Plymouth district attorney, said at Nee's arraignment Monday.

Nee is the son of Thomas J. Nee, president of the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, the city's largest police union. Boston police officers carry .40-caliber Glock handguns, according to a department spokeswoman.

Joseph Nee convicted; is dad part of the story?

The Associated Press thinks so. The Boston Globe doesn't. A bit of background: Joseph Nee was just convicted of conspiracy to commit murder for plotting a Columbine-style attack at Marshfield High School. Tom Nee, Joseph Nee's father, is the head of the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association.

You could make a reasonable case for either position. Tom Nee is a public figure, but the crime is his son's, not his.

That said, the Globe's current approach is especially interesting in light of this October 2004 article, which posited a strong link between Joseph Nee's legal troubles and his relationship with his father.

A stunning story out of Egypt on Friday (HT: Jonathan Schanzer at FDD) after a raid in northern Sinai uncovered a cache of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles bound for Hamas-controlled Gaza. The discovery was made in Be’r al-Hefn near Arish in an area known as a transit point for materials headed for the smuggling tunnels running from Sinai into Gaza. 

The most remarkable part of the story is that the missiles were American-made, arriving from Libya according to multiple reports.

But almost no one noticed when the Department of Homeland Security signaled its intent to broaden the scope of its off-airport searches even more in 2013. Buried deep in the Federal Register in late November was a notice that could dramatically shift the focus of transportation security. It involves the government’s efforts to “establish the current state of security gaps and implemented countermeasures throughout the highway mode of transportation” through the Highway Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement (BASE) program.

Not only does Schumer carry a handgun, the New York City Police Department also provides armed escorts for the good senator. In fact, the Government Accounting Office -- the investigative arm of the US Congress -- slammed Schumer's use of police resources for personal protection. It's clear that Schumer believes he's special. He wishes to ban private citizens' ownership of firearms, while he enjoys layers of protection.
"No wonder Chuckie Schumer shoots his mouth off so much - he's able to protect himself," says a 25-year police veteran.

Also, a check of Pistol License records shows that Senator Schumer possesses an "unrestricted" pistol permit, a rarity in New York City. Licenses are distributed in different categories in the Big Apple: Target Permits allow only use of a firearm at a licensed firing range; Premises Permits allow weapons to be kept in a home or apartment; Restricted Permits allow the gunowner to carry their firearms concealed but only within the purview of their job (security, jewelers, armored car guards, etc.). So it's evident that Senator Schumer has two sets of rules -- one for Americans and one for himself.
So, he and Feinstein and Boxer and the others: not only do they have the permits they think the commoners should be denied, they also demand special treatment from the police.  For that matter, I wonder how many private armed security people they have around, the way Nanny Bloomberg does?

So a few years passed, Piers made more monumental fuck-ups along the way and pretty much drove the Daily Mirror into the ground. By 2004, it was the last straw. Silly ol' Piers went and authorised the publication of photos fresh from the war in Iraq, which seemed to show British Troops abusing and mistreating Iraqi POWs. Unfortunately for him he's Piers Morgan, and the photos turned out to be fake and he wasn't going to be able to get around this one. He was fired the paper had to actually run stories on their front pages for about a week offering their most sincere apologies and making lame excuses. It was pretty pathetic.

One afternoon I was driving south and had her on while she was going on about the 'murder epidemic' in the U.S. and touching on the need for more gun laws(early 80's I believe) because things were 'so much better' in Britain, etc. A guy called in and pointed out the same problem noted in Kevin's post, that if you weren't an inner-city minority male, you weren't facing an 'epidemic; that the mess there was primarily gang- and drug-related, and that if you subtracted those numbers from our homicide rate, our numbers were actually very close to those of Britain. She asked him "Then what's the answer?" and he replied he didn't know what the whole answer to it was.

And she absolutely savaged him. "How dare you say such things without having an answer for them", etc. And the next guy who called in started off with "And he'll tell you 'some of his friends are black', won't he?", and the two of them spent the next couple of minutes talking about how obviously the guy was a racist, and so forth.

And I turned her off. And I never listened to her show again. That was the first time I can remember I actually got hit with the bullshit that taking note of a problem made you a racist/bigot/homophobe/(fill in the insult). 
 That was long before I heard Denny's term Race Warlord Poverty Pimp.  That was before it became a general club to yell RACIST!!! at anyone who brought up inconvenient facts.
It's the standard of the socialist left anymore.

The excuse that people will start shooting each other is also plain and silly. So it is our politicians saying that our society is full of incapable adolescents who can never be trusted? Then, please explain how we can trust them or the police, who themselves grew up and came from the same culture?

No it is about power and a total power over the people. There is a lot of desire to bad mouth the Tsar, particularly by the Communists, who claim he was a tyrant, and yet under him we were armed and under the progressives disarmed. Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step of their ideology. In a statement issued moments ago, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa “praised the inclusion of special provisions in the proposed 113th Congress rules package that will keep in place legal obligations on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and others at the Justice Department as a result of lawful subpoenas issued in the 112th Congress.

“The inclusion of these provisions in the House rules will allow the civil suit, authorized by a bipartisan vote of the House in July 2012, which seeks federal courts to compel the production of relevant subpoenaed documents to continue,” the press release issued by Frederick R. Hill, Committee Director of Communications advised. “Without these provisions, the Justice Department could have argued that its obligation to produce subpoenaed documents expired with the previous Congress.”
 I'll bet Holder and Obama and every other appointee connected to this had hoped it would go away; I hope they get ulcers thinking about this.

And, of course, Rep. Cummings(referred to by the Dutchman as Bloody-Hands) is still trying to protect Holder and the others; after all, no pile of bodies and lies is enough to justify troubling The Lightbringer and his minions, right?

Speaking of gun bigots, had a go-round with a guy who announced that
the .223/5.56 and 5.7x28 cartridges should be banned from civilian possession( including banning all reloading dies for them),
ANY rifle or pistol chambered for either cartridge should be banned(yes, bolt-actions and single-shots, too),
ANYTHING with a 'black parkerized finish or charging handle on the top or side' is not for self-defense and should be banned,
and on.  And on.  And then moved onto wanting gun licensing, registration, nation ballistic fingerprinting of every gun, sales only through a FFL holder or LE agency to other licensed owners, etc.  And ending with
 Is this a form of registration (like Hitler used when he collected all the guns and put a captial penalty on possession) - Unfortunately, yes. Will this prevent a Sandy Hook? Probably not, the gun owner was irresponsible (and largely I have no sympathy for her because of that.) But will it potentially prevent countless other Sandy Hooks? I think yes.
So.  It'll be hugely expensive, won't work very well, insanely troublesome for honest people and would NOT have preventted Sandy Hook, 'but it might prevent others so it's worth it!'

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago has logged its 500th homicide of 2012.

The last time the city reached the 500-homicide mark was in 2008, when the year ended with 512 killings. Last year, city records show Chicago had 435 homicides.

Speaking of budget trouble,
President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden.
According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he'll now make $231,900 per year.
Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase.
