Speaking of the range, more light-load tests

After some more reading on the subject, I decided to try using 5.0 of Unique out in .30-30, 7.62x54r, and .30-06.  Gave them a try today.  

.30-30 used the same three bullets as in the 3.0 grains of Bullseye experiment.
Roundnose,

and, as a pleasant surprise, the .32 wadcutter

Yes, that's four in that nice cloverleaf, and I'm willing to blame myself for that one left-low.

And, just as a try, the Lyman 115-grain spitzer designed for the .30 Carbine, used as-cast, lubed with Liquid Alox, no gas-check.

All show well.  The roundnose, SWC and spitzer all fed with no problems; the wadcutter has to be loaded individually.  Recoil was along the lines of 'Oh, the rifle shifted slightly'.  Slightly different points of impact vertically between some.  The SWC and wadcutter ought to be death on small pests and varmints at short range.  This being a tube-magazine I did not try feeding the spitzers from it, as- even with such light-recoil loads- you shouldn't put pointed-nose bullets in a tube mag.

The 7.62x54r, with the SWC bullet and this load,  was so-so.

It appears that center hole is for two of the five. 
Frankly, it may be that with a bit better light and more solid rest the SWC loads may have looked better; that was the last group of the day and I'd started being distracted by the Tommy gun.

I did try .30-06 with the 115-grain spitzer, no gas-check, with this load

Left target shot with the bullet seated to the crimp groove, on the right seated to the first lube groove.  That one I'll try again.

This is mostly for fun, seeing what can do with light bullets and very light propellant charges.  Five grains equals 1400 charges from a pound of powder, not much noise and almost no recoil.  Be great loads to teach a new shooter with.

And I'm curious, would that SWC load shoot better in a different Mosin-Nagant?  How would it work in a Lee Enfield?  Makes me wish I had more rifles, and a range in the back yard.

Past vs. current engineering

Tam's written a time or two on how much skilled machine work was used in making firearms in the past compared to how a lot are made now.  Reason I was reminded of that was that at the range this morning I was distracted by a couple of bursts of automatic fire.  Peeking around the partitions revealed a man firing an honest-to-Deity Thompson subgun.  1943 manufacture.

Yes, he let me fondle it, and put ten rounds through*.  If I could afford the regular conversion of that much money into noise, I'd buy one.  But to the point at hand: in the past I've had the opportunity to fire a Uzi and a couple of Ingram subguns, one of the latter in .45.  Compared to them, the Tommy is heavy.  That receiver is one big hunk of machined steel, making for the heart of a heavy firearm.

And that translates to money; big steel blank, lots of machining to turn it into a receiver, which involves a skilled machinist and machine time and cutters.  Thinking of making this sucker by the many-thousands during a war makes the adoption of the M3 very understandable.

The obvious question: "Chief, if your officers were doing everything right,

and didn't plan on doing anything wrong or questionable, why did they turn the cameras off?"

Turning the cameras off should be considered proof of bad or illegal intent, and punished appropriately.  With any fines coming out of the pockets of the officers involved.

Truth was not something the court cared about: “The Court [Tingsrätten] notes that the question of whether or not Michael Hess’s pronouncement is true, or appeared to be true to Michael Hess, has no bearing on the case. Michael Hess’s statement must be judged based on its timing and context.”

Nanny Bloomberg doesn't like it

It isn’t even the third week of February, and the BATFE has already taken three major executive actions on gun control. First, it was a major change to what activities constitute regulated “manufacturing” of firearms. Next, BATFE reversed a less than year old position on firing a shouldered “pistol.” Now, BATFE has released a “Framework for Determining Whether Certain Projectiles are ‘Primarily Intended for Sporting Purposes’ Within the Meaning of 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(17)(c)”, which would eliminate M855’s exemption to the armor piercing ammunition prohibition and make future exemptions nearly impossible.
Any doubts that these clowns practice saying "I am the LAW!" and laughing?

The Army has deleted a tweet posted Thursday afternoon referring to “chinks” in the armor of its Special Operations capabilities after receiving numerous accusations of racism.

These cases of pedophilia, rape, and sexual abuse were well known to police and social services long before the reports and the arrests. In 2008, one of the Rochdale victims, then 15, went to the police and social workers providing DNA evidence to back up her story of being gang-raped. Twice the police refused to prosecute. She continued to be raped by up to five men a night, four or five nights a week. Rotherham police received 157 reports in 2013 concerning sexual exploitation though the police were receiving evidence dating back to 2002, all of which was ignored or suppressed.

The government has failed these girls because it’s racially and culturally inconvenient to help them. The rapists are Muslim, and the majority of the victims are white. In the UK, racial sensitivity is so high that the mere accusation of racism could end a public servant’s career. And the political class promotes political correctness and multiculturalism at any cost.

I've got friends who love and trust NPR for news; they may not care about this crap, but I do.

I do not know if American courts would find much of what Charlie Hebdo does to be hate speech unprotected by the Constitution, but I know—hope?—that most Americans would. Herridge said that this was the last and best opportunity to rescue all of the hostages together, because after ISIS learned of the possible raid, the hostages were no longer held together.
You'll recall they didn't want to whack bin Laden.  And another hostage was missed because of this kind of delay.

If it'd been Obama dealing with the Barbary pirates, he'd have been in favor of paying protection money and ransoming hostages forever rather than fight them.

The 28-page opinion in the case of Frederic Russell Mance, Jr. against Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive Director B. Todd Jones was signed by United States District Judge Reed O’Connor.
From what I understand this is certain to go to the next step, probably all the way to the Supremes.  But it is a step in the right direction.

of the .30-30 loads I put together the other day.  All at 30 yards, all with a 6 o'clock hold on the bullseye

Nice groups.  The .32-caliber roundnose bullet, not so much

All right about 6" below point of aim; not surprising, these are low-velocity loads.

One more test done, couple of days ago I was able to cast some of the 115-grain .30-caliber bullets, lubed some with Liquid Alox, no gas check, and loaded them in .30-06 with 6.0 of bullseye, a practice load listed in that article at Cast Boolits. He used this with imperfect bullets not bad enough to throw back in the pot; these were just about perfect, but the results were not

Possibly my fault, and I'll load five more to give another try just to be certain.

But we're supposed to trust the IRS.

A British police force has apologised after an officer told a newsagent to hand over details of customers who purchased copies of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.

Wiltshire police confirmed that one of their officers visited a newsagent in Corsham, Wiltshire, to ask for the names of four customers who ordered the commemorative “survivors’ issue” of the magazine.

The incident came to light when Anne Keat, 77, who bought the special issue from that newsagent, wrote a letter to the Guardian to warn people that wearing badges emblazoned with je suis Charlie may attract police interest.

This has surprised no one more than Traust Jonsson, who was long in charge of climate research for the Iceland met office (and with whom Homewood has been in touch). Jonsson was amazed to see how the new version completely “disappears” Iceland’s “sea ice years” around 1970, when a period of extreme cooling almost devastated his country’s economy.

Ran across this late last night, and wondered how this was going to shake out.  At the least, if this is true, the CDC screwed with the data to get the results they wanted, which screws said results.

And the next round of experiment in .30-30 is

from left to right, the .32-caliber 100-grain SWC, the .32-caliber 95-grain roundnose, and the .32-caliber 90-grain wadcutter; the SWC is from a RCBS mold, the other two are Lee.

Digging around Cast Boolits, found a number of gallery loads(light, short-range, quiet) for .30-30 using various bullets and even a single 00 buckshot using light charges of pistol or shotgun powder.  In this case 3.0 grains of Bullseye. 

With these bullet shapes, the SWC chambers while crimped(barely) at the crimp groove. Same for the roundnose.  The wadcutter had to be seated to the first lube groove(it's a tumble-lube design with lots of little grooves) to chamber.  Next time I hit the range I'll give these a try and see what happens.  B did suggest, with non-gas-checked bullets, using a tight-in-the-case-neck paper wad to reduce the chance of lead fouling, but that didn't occur before I loaded these; I doubt it'll be a problem with these charges, we'll see.  Can always do it in the future.

I'm still planning on casting some of the 115-grain Carbine bullets to try without checks; will make a few of those with and without the wad.

The cast bullets had gas checks, could have tried with 10.0 as well.  Though at this range(30 yards) don't see why.  Actually, next time I can cast I'm going to make more of these and try them without gas checks.  There's a wonderful article over at Cast Boolits on the subject that includes this:
The "100 Yard Target and Small Game" Load

I use Mattern's plain-based "100 yard target load" to use up my minor visual defect culls for offhand and rapid-fire 100 yard practice. I substitute my usual gas-checked bullets, but without the gas-check. I started doing this in 1963 with the Lyman #311291. Today I use the Lee .312-155-2R, or the similar tumble-lubed design TL.312-160-2R. Most of my rifle shooting is done with these two basic designs.

Bullets I intend for plain based loads are blunted using a flat-nosed top punch in my lubricator, providing a 1/8" flat which makes them more effective on small game and clearly distinguishes them from my heavier gas-checked loads. This makes more sense to me than casting different bullets.

Bullet preparation is easy. I visually inspect each run of bullets and throw those with gross defects into the scrap box for remelting. Bullets with minor visual defects are tumble-lubed in Lee Liquid Alox without sizing, and are used for plain base plinkers. ...For gas-check bullets loaded without the gas- checks, for cases like the .303 British, 7.62 NATO, 7.62x54R Russian and 30-06, I use 6-7 grains of almost any fast burning powder. These include, but are not limited to Bullseye, WW231, SR-7625, Green Dot, Red Dot or 700-X. I have also had fine results with 8 to 9 grains of medium rate burning pistol or shotgun powders, such as Unique, PB, Herco, or SR-4756 in any case of .303 British or larger.

In the 7.62x39 case, use no more than 4 grains of the fast burning powders mentioned or 5 grains of the shotgun powders. Theses make accurate 50 yard small game loads which let you operate the action manually and save your precious cases. These plinkers are more accurate than you can hold.

I'd imagine .30-30 would fit in the 7.62x39 size.  That would mean 4 or 5 grains of powder with that 115-grain bullet, or the 100-grain SWC tried earlier.  That requires a try.

I need new shoes

I hate finding shoes.

Can't get the same ones I currently have, because the New Models are in.  And (running shoes) damn near EVERYTHING is neon colors or baby-puke green or something.  And the cost of some of the things...

Back to a question I asked before: considering a minimalist running shoe has no fancy padding, no fancy ANYTHING, how the hell are these bastards asking a hundred bucks for them?

Hopefully, these will stay together until I find something suitable as a replacement that doesn't cost as if it were made of first-class leather.
