Well, here's a true believer in what's in the Koran
The Kuwaiti female activist begins by insisting that "it's of course true" that "the prophet of Islam legitimized sex-slavery." She recounts how when she was in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, she asked various sheikhs and muftis (learned, authoritative Muslims) about the legality of sex-slavery according to Sharia: they all confirmed it to be perfectly legal; Kuwaiti ulema further pointed out that extra "virile" men—Western synonyms include "sex-crazed," "lecherous," "perverted"—would do well to purchase sex-slaves to sate their appetites without sinning.
Here's a particularly interesting excerpt from her taped speech on the rules governing sex-slaves:
A Muslim state must [first] attack a Christian state—sorry, I mean any non-Muslim state—and they [the women, the future sex-slaves] must be captives of the raid. Is this forbidden? Not at all; according to Islam, sex slaves are not at all forbidden. Quite the contrary, the rules regulating sex-slaves differ from those for free women [i.e., Muslim women]: the latter's body must be covered entirely, except for her face and hands, whereas the sex-slave is kept naked from the bellybutton on up—she is different from the free woman; the free woman has to be married properly to her husband, but the sex-slave—he just buys her and that's that.
She went on to offer concrete suggestions: "For example, in the Chechnyan war, surely there are female Russian captives. So go and buy those and sell them here in Kuwait; better that than have our men engage in forbidden sexual relations. I don't see any problem in this, no problem at all."

A fairly standard(last few years) "The police won't do anything
because they'll be called islamophobic" article from (fG)Britain. Thing about it that I want to mention is cameras:

So in Britain you've got cameras everywhere, with the excuse/reason "It's for public safety, clearing crimes," etc. But they won't use the video if it's a PC attacker; "Screw the victims, the criminals might call us names."
Which means the radical types are using these "We must be seen as politically correct, no matter the cost" attitudes to negate any actual value to the constant surveillance, and to advance the creation of Londonistan. Wonderful, isn't it?

I’m addicted to being able to haul home a week’s worth of groceries with two little kids in tow without having to wait for the fucking bus with eighty pounds of filled plastic bags in my hands. (That’s disregarding the fact that I live out in the sticks, and the nearest bus stop is four miles away, which is one hell of a hike with the aforementioned two little kids and week’s worth of groceries.)
I don’t give a shit what kind of substance I have to put in the tank of the minivan to feed that particular addiction. I don’t care about oil. If my minivan ran on distilled cow piss, I’d fill up with distilled cow piss. If they ever come up with an electric minivan that goes the speed limit on the Interstate, accelerates to highway speeds in less time than a geologic epoch, and doesn’t need to be recharged every fifty miles with electricity that comes from a coal-powered plant anyway, I’ll gladly buy one of those and deep-six the old combustion engine.
Ah, but in Happy Unicorn Land you wouldn't be allowed to live out there(unless you're a gummint-approved organic(i.e. 'spreading the e. coli around' farmer); you'll be forced to wait for that Enviroweenie-Approved Public Transport or use a bicycle; and all the electricity will be coming from windmills and biomass(i.e. 'burning wood') and such truly royal methods of generation.

While I agree that many meat eaters can be obnoxious, inconsiderate and self-righteous in celebration of their carnivorousness, there is an equally pernicious sentiment among vegetarians that needs to be called out: the false notion that a vegetarian or vegan diet is actually good for you. Like the meat eater who needs to acknowledge the harm they're meting out as a consequence of their dietary choices, the vegetarian needs to acknowledge the fact that their diet is far from ideal.
You'll notice he glosses completely over the fact that lots of vegetarians and vegans are so effing self-righteous about not eating meat that you can't stand to be in the same room with them; no, their only real fault is 'not acknowledging their diet isn't ideal'. This line, for instance:
A vegetarian's choice to avoid meat for ethical or environmental reasons is truly noble. They are willing to sacrifice their own health in order to mete out as little harm as possible. I bow down to these people in deep and profound respect.
I have yet to meet a vegetarian or vegan who even pretended they thought they were 'sacrificing their own health'; the ones I've known truly believed they had not only the morally-correct choice in food, but that it was wonderful for their health. Even when they were going downhill.
A while back daughter found this link and sent it to me: dedicated vegan who ran into real health problems and started eating meat. You want to know why I so dislike lots of vegans, and call bullshit on that 'sacrifice their own health' line above?

Tisch does provide background information on how drug traffickers commonly operate, but that too does not establish probable cause. Det. Tisch does try to make those involved appear to be a criminal and suspicious as possible, but he does this by often leaving out inconvenient, even contradictory details such as the fact that Jose was arrested years earlier and the charges were dropped. I am still mystified why any judge would issue a warrant based on this affidavit unless he merely scanned it instead of reading it. If that was the case, it might appear to be competent.
If this is, in fact, a valid copy of the actual affidavit, Vanessa Guerena’s attorney is a happy man today.

The DOJ also objected to the use of a written test in general for firefighter applicants. “With regard to the writing portion for firefighter, it seems unusual to me. I have never seen a fire department give a writing test to entry level firefighter applicants. From what I know about the job, it seems very unlikely that an entry level firefighter would have to do much writing,” wrote Ms. Thawley. “All of our firefighters are either EMT or paramedics and do a lot of report writing,” responded Giselle S. Johnson, Secretary and Chief Examiner, Civil Service Board.

But they are not there to act as reinforcements for the Liberal Democrats. They are there to remind us that we are at heart a Christian nation and people.
They should stand up for lifelong marriage, denounce the lax treatment of wrongdoers and the neglect of their victims, condemn public drunkenness, defend unborn babies against those who wish to kill them, stand in the way of stupid and unjust wars, and of selfish cruelty of all kinds. But they really have to get out of their heads the idea that the Welfare State must be unconditionally defended.
For it is the hard-working poor who pay for it, and who see their near neighbours living lives of shameless idleness on their money. And they also watch criminals profiting by their crimes, and getting away with it.

Provides a 90-day amnesty period during which veterans and their family members can register in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record any firearm acquired before October 31, 1968, by a veteran while a member of the Armed Forces stationed outside the continental United States. The California state Senate voted 28-8 Wednesday to exempt itself from the pointless gun-control laws that apply to the rest of the populace. Legislators apparently think they alone are worthy to pack heat on the streets for personal protection, and the masses ought to wait until the police arrive.I’m following up on this claim, because the bill text I’ve been able to locate has the elected official exemption language stricken. Still, what crust to even propose such a thing, especially since some of the same members who want guns to defend their own precious hindquarters insist on disarming their constituents.

Oh yah, this makes a LOT of sense

The family was going through security when two TSA agents singled Drew Mandy out for a special pat down. Drew is severely mentally disabled. He's 29, but his parents said he has the mental capacity of a two-year-old, which made the experience that followed at metro Detroit's McNamera Terminal that much harder to deal with.
"You have got to be kidding me. I honestly felt that those two agents did not know what they were doing," Mandy told us.
Dr. Mandy claimed they asked Drew to place his feet on the yellow shoe line, something he didn't understand. They proceeded to pat his pants down, questioning the padding which was his adult diapers. When the agents asked Drew to take his hand and rub the front and back of his pants so they could swab it for explosives, his dad stepped in and tried to explain that Drew was mentally challenged.
"They said, 'Please, sir, we know what we're doing,'" Mandy said.

The TSA agents saw Drew holding a six-inch plastic hammer.
"My son carries his ball and his hammer for security. He goes everywhere with (them)," said Mandy.
The TSA it seems saw the toy as a weapon.
"He took the hammer and he tapped the wall. 'See, it's hard. It could be used as a weapon,'" Mandy explained. "So, Drew's also holding the ball, and I said, 'Well, how about the ball?' He (said), 'Oh, he can keep that."

We also spoke to a federal security director who said this incident is still under investigation, but as far as they can tell right now, better judgment was needed.

The family was going through security when two TSA agents singled Drew Mandy out for a special pat down. Drew is severely mentally disabled. He's 29, but his parents said he has the mental capacity of a two-year-old, which made the experience that followed at metro Detroit's McNamera Terminal that much harder to deal with.
"You have got to be kidding me. I honestly felt that those two agents did not know what they were doing," Mandy told us.
Dr. Mandy claimed they asked Drew to place his feet on the yellow shoe line, something he didn't understand. They proceeded to pat his pants down, questioning the padding which was his adult diapers. When the agents asked Drew to take his hand and rub the front and back of his pants so they could swab it for explosives, his dad stepped in and tried to explain that Drew was mentally challenged.
"They said, 'Please, sir, we know what we're doing,'" Mandy said.

The TSA agents saw Drew holding a six-inch plastic hammer.
"My son carries his ball and his hammer for security. He goes everywhere with (them)," said Mandy.
The TSA it seems saw the toy as a weapon.
"He took the hammer and he tapped the wall. 'See, it's hard. It could be used as a weapon,'" Mandy explained. "So, Drew's also holding the ball, and I said, 'Well, how about the ball?' He (said), 'Oh, he can keep that."

We also spoke to a federal security director who said this incident is still under investigation, but as far as they can tell right now, better judgment was needed.
Gee, ya think MAYBE?
And what makes this utter stupidity stand out even more as an example of idiots performing security theater?
The TSA took away one toy hammer, but they were still able to take another toy hammer on board the airplane. How did that happen?
Drew's mother, always prepared, had another one in her backpack and that already passed through security with no problem.

There has been a wild animal alert issued in the northern suburbs. A mountain lion, yes, a mountain lion, is on the loose, reports CBS 2’s Lou Young.
In Greenwich, CT.
Greenwich Conservation director Denise Savageau said that if anyone happens upon a suspected mountain lion, they should, “Act large, stand up tall, wave your arms and make noises. Don’t freeze. You don’t want to act like a bunny.”
By doing so, the animal more than likely will not view a human as prey, Savageau said.
"Hey, Clyde, they make it easy, don't they? They actually show us where they are!"

Instead, ATF documents show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms knowingly and deliberately flooded Mexico with assault rifles. Their intent was to expose the entire smuggling organization, from top to bottom, but the operation spun out of control and supervisors refused pleas from field agents to stop it. Only after Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry died did ATF Agent John Dodson blow the whistle and expose the scandal.

Ref the Guerena killing
I was looking at Ayoobs' column at Backwoods where he goes over the video, and I've got to throw something in:
I've worked 12-hour shifts(though not in a place as strenuous as a copper mine). When I'd get home I'd want to maybe eat a bite, clean up and go to bed. Where I'd lay down and pass out. And I've got news for Mr. Ayoob: I would probably have slept through that 'high-decibel siren wail that lasted for several seconds'; if it DID wake me up, I'd have been half-conscious wondering when that asshole would shut his car alarm off.
I've had people knock on the front door and I never heard it; other times I did but had no idea what it was, if it was an actual noise or something from a dream, I'd never have heard some guy saying 'Police' outside.
One other thing: some cop blog, a couple of years ago, had a thread on a effed-up SWAT raid and a couple of the cops were bitching because the guys behind the lead hadn't thrown down covering fire. My response was "Believe it or not, you are NOT in Easy Company in Kraut territory; 'covering' or 'suppressing' fire is NOT supposed to be a law enforcement technique." I have to wonder if the number of shots fired might not be only some guys panicking, but if one or two of them might have thought 'covering fire' was a good idea? If so, the training of this team was execrable beyond what we already thought.

Pistol-caliber vs. rifle-caliber carbines
Been thinking about this since I read Tam's review of shooting the KRISS guns, in particular this part:
There's only one problem: Most of the people who used machine pistols have gone to rifle-caliber "shorty" carbines over the last few years; any agency still using the MP5 is probably going to replace them with M4s or shorty G36's or the like, rather than another pistol-caliber weapon.
My question is 'Why?' I understand a rifle cartridge has more power, but- with everything being a tradeoff- what's the big advantage for a LE organization switching something like a tactical team from a subgun to something like a very short-barreled M4?
Yeah, a .223 is more powerful than a 9mm or .40S&W or .45acp or 10mm; enough so to make up for the increased muzzle blast(for one thing)? I haven't seen a M4 firing up close with a 14" barrel, I have seen a couple of AR15 pistols fired indoors, and the blast and- with some ammo- flash was fairly awful; I can't imagine a M4 with a shorter barrel(don't they make variants with 10" or 10.5" barrels?) would be much better.
I have no personal knowledge to make a statement from, I'm just wondering here.
By the way, just out of curiosity I looked at the Colt site: in their 'law enforcement' and 'M4' section it says
Colt M4 Carbine is the weapon of choice according to today's law enforcement concepts of rapid deployment, mobility and increased firepower. etc. Then, down below,
- M203 40mm Grenade Launcher mounts directly to the Carbine without modification
Hmmm. Is that generally a selling point for LE?

Remember that mess in Miami the other day?
The obvious question after viewing this video is why did police wish to destroy evidence, which is a crime. Benoit said that police had destroyed other people’s cameras as well but nobody else has come forwarded with that claim.
However, Local 10 is reporting that police confiscated one of their cameras as well, which is illegal because the law requires them to obtain a subpoena to do this.
Confiscating a camera from a news crew? Dumb move, guys.
Under the heading of 'dumb move', we also have this from Baltimore:
On May 29, 2011, the Baltimore Police Criminal Intelligence Section issued an “Intelligence Bulletin” warning officers about persons displaying the 2nd Amendment decal pictured here. The bulletin contains the following caption in bold red letters:
“….while the individual who is displaying the symbol may not be armed, the presence of the symbol provides an early warning indicator that you MAY be about to encounter an armed individual.”
Reminds me of the Fusion Center that advised cops that people with Gadsden flags, or with conservative views, or who talk about government following the Constitution, should be considered terrorism suspects.

The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife's defaulted student loans.
"They busted down my door for this," Wright said. "It wasn't even me."
According to the Department of Education's Office of the Inspector General, the case can't be discussed publicly until it is closed, but a spokesperson did confirm that the department did issue the search warrant at Wright's home.
The Office of the Inspector General has a law enforcement branch of federal agents that carry out search warrants and investigations.

And sued. If for nothing else than "How effing stupid do you have to be to agree to take part in such a thing?"

Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation, we can't comment on the specifics of the case. We can say that the OIG's office conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds.
Well, doesn't that make it all better?

As someone asked, if the IG of the DoE actually needs an arrest made, why can't they go to the EffingBI, the US Marshall's Office, or the local cops? Why does the IG need a friggin' SWAT team?
Unless and until we hear that this "criminal investigation" involves some kind of imminent threat of violence, there will be no margin of excuse for it, only new opportunities for bureaucrats and commentators to demonstrate that they are perfectly content living in and even contributing to a police state.

2nd piece of analysis on the Guerena killing

A: He admitted to repeatedly lying. To everybody. Considering his past, this was a surprise?
B:Let's put it this way: Any offenses that result in a press conference in which a member of Congress can relevantly be asked "Were you fully erect?" are offenses that disqualify that congressman from public service.
It's that simple.
"My constituents have to make the determination," he said.
Which is technically true.
But if Tony Weiner had a shred of personal honor, he'd relieve them of that responsibility.
Personal honor? To borrow from Blinky Pelosi, are you kidding?
C: I heard part of the confession/apology/now leave me alone conference yesterday; Weiner is even more of a slimy bastard than I'd thought. Damn.
D: When ABC is playing "We're sorry we didn't actually act like reporters, but he lied to us!" and that absolute clown Behar is telling Barbara Walters she's acting like an idiot, you know these people realize they went WAY over the line into coverup-for-our-friends.
Weiner doesn't have any real sense of honor; the only way he'll resign is if the pressure on him- from voters in his district and/or other democrats- gets heavy enough. We'll see.

Ever have days when you just didn't want
to write about anything? It's been like that lately, but ran across some things I'd like to point to.
First, Miami Beach PD seems to need to do some remedial training of its officers. After it fires some of the worst. And from the description of this shooting, if accurate, some of them need to be prosecuted.
First, police pointed their guns at the man who shot the video, according to a Miami Herald interview with the videographer.
Then they ordered the man and his girlfriend out the car and threw them down to the ground, yelling “you want to be fucking paparazzi?”
Then they snatched the cell phone from his hand and slammed it to the ground before stomping on it. Then they placed the smashed phone in the videographer's back pocket as he was laying down on the ground.
And finally, they took him to a mobile command center where they snapped his photo and demanded the phone again, then took him to police headquarters where they conducted a recorded interview with him before releasing him.
But what they didn’t know was that Narces Benoit had removed the SIM card and hid it in his mouth, which means the video survived.

The three-minute video captured on Narces Benoit’s HTC EVO phone begins as officers crowd around the east side of Herisse’s car with guns drawn. Roughly 15 seconds into the video, officers open fire.
Benoit filmed the incident from the sidewalk on the northeast corner of 13th Street and Collins Avenue, close enough to see some officers’ faces and individual muzzle flashes.
Shortly after the gunfire ends, an officer points at Benoit and police can be heard yelling for him to turn off the camera. The voices are muffled at times. The 35-year-old car stereo technician drops his hand with the camera and hurries back to his Ford Expedition parked further east on 13th Street.
This is bad; really, really bad. The shooting should(of course) be fully investigated; the actions these clowns took toward citizens who shot video should as well, and from the sound of this firing would be the least of consequences for some of them.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov says NATO is "one step" from sending troops into Libya in a bid to help rebels remove Moammar Gadhafi from power.
Well, isn't that just wonderful? And if American troops of any type are involved, will Obama still insist he doesn't have to follow the law because 'NATO said so'?

Ramon Almonte, the Guerrero state police chief, said on Monday he will ask the federal congress to make it easier for common citizens to get permits for weapons to defend themselves.
Almonte’s brother was killed on Jan. 1 in a rural town in Guerrero by unidentified gunmen. The state has been plagued by such executions.
“When you fight someone and at least you have a ‘piece,’ the person who is attacking you might think twice,” Almonte said. “We cannot go on the way we are.”
It may not be intended that way, but that 'common citizens' wording seems important to me; as in "Stop letting the wealthy and connected do what average people aren't allowed to do."
I mentioned a while back that when son was in Basic he told me that while the issue cleaning kit was great for in the field, the issue CLP wasn't very good*; later experience has not changed that opinion. A while back, the day before going to the range for qualifications, he went into town and bought a big bottle of Hoppe's #9. First, Miami Beach PD seems to need to do some remedial training of its officers. After it fires some of the worst. And from the description of this shooting, if accurate, some of them need to be prosecuted.
First, police pointed their guns at the man who shot the video, according to a Miami Herald interview with the videographer.
Then they ordered the man and his girlfriend out the car and threw them down to the ground, yelling “you want to be fucking paparazzi?”
Then they snatched the cell phone from his hand and slammed it to the ground before stomping on it. Then they placed the smashed phone in the videographer's back pocket as he was laying down on the ground.
And finally, they took him to a mobile command center where they snapped his photo and demanded the phone again, then took him to police headquarters where they conducted a recorded interview with him before releasing him.
But what they didn’t know was that Narces Benoit had removed the SIM card and hid it in his mouth, which means the video survived.

The three-minute video captured on Narces Benoit’s HTC EVO phone begins as officers crowd around the east side of Herisse’s car with guns drawn. Roughly 15 seconds into the video, officers open fire.
Benoit filmed the incident from the sidewalk on the northeast corner of 13th Street and Collins Avenue, close enough to see some officers’ faces and individual muzzle flashes.
Shortly after the gunfire ends, an officer points at Benoit and police can be heard yelling for him to turn off the camera. The voices are muffled at times. The 35-year-old car stereo technician drops his hand with the camera and hurries back to his Ford Expedition parked further east on 13th Street.
This is bad; really, really bad. The shooting should(of course) be fully investigated; the actions these clowns took toward citizens who shot video should as well, and from the sound of this firing would be the least of consequences for some of them.

Oh, this ought to be on video
Sheriff's deputies, movers, and the Nyergers' attorney went to the bank and foreclosed on it. The attorney gave instructions to to remove desks, computers, copiers, filing cabinets and any cash in the teller's drawers.
After about an hour of being locked out of the bank, the bank manager handed the attorney a check for the legal fees.
See, Bank of America filed foreclosure on a house. Problem was, the people didn't owe any money on their house. To anyone, let alone BoA. So they went to court and the judge said "BoA, you owe these people their legal fees." And BoA dicked around for five months and wouldn't pay the fees. So they filed foreclosure on the bank.
I just freakin' love it. Every dirtbag bank out there that's screwed with people who didn't actually owe them money should have the same thing happen to them.

I gave up on it; they were stuck in the "BUSH LIED!!!" theme.*

Why was Saddam interested in testing biological-warfare agents on humans if he didn't have a biological-weapons program?
• "Reference strains" of a wide variety of biological-weapons agents were found beneath the sink in the home of a prominent Iraqi BW scientist. "We thought it was a big deal," a senior administration official said. "But it has been written off [by the press] as a sort of 'starter set.'" [again, my emphasis]
• New research on BW-applicable agents, brucella and Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever, and continuing work on ricin and aflatoxin that were not declared to the United Nations.

Recently several districts in southwest Scotland have expanded the boycott on Israeli products, and are now barring stores from carrying English translations of Israeli books. Shortly after Operation Cast Lead, the West Dunbartonshire Regional Council, located west of Glasgow, approved a bill that called to boycott goods produced in Israel. After the raid on the Turkish Flotilla to Gaza, the boycott included "a ban on the purchase of English translations of Israeli books and the distribution of these books in public libraries throughout the council's jurisdiction." The Scottish city of Dundee also joined the West Dunbartonshire by distributing "posters...calling on some 150,000 residents to refrain from buying Israeli goods." Israeli products will also have a special mark placed on them to make them more identifiable. No other country's books are being boycotted.
It is expected that "ten more Scottish councils may join the boycott."

Yes, the Gunwalker investigation- and the stonewalling
by ATF and DOJ- is still going on. Thanks to Sipsey Street found a link to this story; here's a few bits:
Here’s the problem
First, no one seems to know if Fast and Furious was, in fact, a legitimate operation, one built and played ‘by the book.’ No one at ATF, or anywhere else, seems to have any paperwork (that they want to share) on the operation.
Second, if one of the weapons that made its way into the hands of a Mexican gunman via the ATF operation was the same weapon used to murder US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, killed last December on US soil, it suggests that, at a very early stage, ATF lost control (to the Mexican military? To Federal Police? To the cartels?) of the operation. Why and how?
Third, if ATF Agent John Dodson had not blown the whistle and revealed that an ATF operation called Fast and Furious was in play, no one could have linked the weapon found at Terry’s murder site to an operation that had to have been initiated and approved by high-levels officials at ATF and DOJ—and that story would have benefited not just Mexico, but proponents of stronger gun regulation here in the US, and in the US government, as well. Win-win.
The straw that broke ATF Agent Dodson’s back? Why he ‘blew the whistle’?
The realization that the weapon used to kill a fellow agent had fallen into the hands of his murderers via an operation sanctioned and implemented by US authorities.

CBS News reports that Dodson was not the only ATF agent worried about Fast and Furious:
Senior ATF officials, Eric Holder, the Attorney General of the United States, and, most importantly, President Barack Obama have discounted the need for Issa’s subpoenas, contending that an ‘in-house’ investigation by the Office of the Investigator General within Holder’s Department of Justice is all the situation warrants.

Calderon blames cartel violence in Mexico on 1) Washington’s lack of financial support and inadequate sharing of US intelligence, 2) the US government’s lax attitude toward cross-border arms trafficking, and 3) the drug habits of the American people.
In other words, send more money south, reinstate the ban on the sale of assault rifles in the US, and give America’s eight million drug addicts what they really need most–treatment and prevention (as opposed to prosecution and jail time).
Hmmmm . . .where have we heard this before? Could this be what they call ‘the intersection of politics and policy’?

Mexico’s president, says the WP article, was dead-on in his criticism of Mexico’s arrogant partner to the north, and it’s time for the US to eat humble pie—after it apologizes to Mexico and toughens its gun-control laws.
ATF, led by senior officials who, along with Eric Holder, share a predilection for tougher gun laws, also fell in behind Presidents Calderon and Obama when the report about Fast and Furious broke, presenting a strong and very silent front to the public.
Let’s not forget that one former ATF Acting Director, Michael Sullivan (an on-the-record advocate for stringent gun control) claimed his investigators were able to trace 90-95 percent of guns found in Mexico to the United States. (Note: the only ‘guns found in Mexico’ to which ATF eventually gains access are weapons we know can be traced back to the US, because they are cherry-picked and hand-delivered to US law enforcement by the Mexican authorities themselves.)
Another of Obama’s erstwhile nominees for ATF Director, Andrew Traver, who has headed ATF’s Chicago Office, is also an on-the-record spokesperson for tougher gun legislation. Speaking to Traver’s nomination, a few months ago, Rep. Chris Cox (R-CA) said, “You might as well put an arsonist in charge of the fire department.”

Let’s just suppose.
The AK-47 used to gun down fellow federal agent Brian Terry, once recovered, would no doubt have been identified by ATF as a weapon recently purchased from a US gun dealer on the southwest border (ATF would have had, after all, the serial numbers and other identifying documentation).
There would have been no need to mention the existence of any ATF ‘secret sting,’Operation Fast and Furious, or any links between these ATF endeavors and the movement of the weapon used to murder Terry across the US border and into the hands of his Mexican assailants.
Instead, the discovery and identification of the AK-47 used to gun down a US agent as one sold by a US gun dealer and then trafficked ‘illegally’ over the border into Mexico and into the possession of the cartels might have created a ‘perfect PR storm,’ neatly reinforcing the arguments put forth, first, by Mexico’s government, which contends there would be no gang violence in that country if the US didn’t supply gangs with guns; second, by higher-ups in the US government who favor tougher gun-control laws and non-intervention in Mexico (DOJ and the Obama Administration); and, third, by the public anti-gun lobby in America.
Indeed, here’s how that story would have read: Mexico’s claim re the US fueling cartel violence is right, and worse yet, weapons trafficked from the US are no longer being used just to murder Mexicans, but to kill Americans as well.

Anybody doubt that this was the real intention of Fast & Furious? I don't, not anymore.
Here’s the problem
First, no one seems to know if Fast and Furious was, in fact, a legitimate operation, one built and played ‘by the book.’ No one at ATF, or anywhere else, seems to have any paperwork (that they want to share) on the operation.
Second, if one of the weapons that made its way into the hands of a Mexican gunman via the ATF operation was the same weapon used to murder US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, killed last December on US soil, it suggests that, at a very early stage, ATF lost control (to the Mexican military? To Federal Police? To the cartels?) of the operation. Why and how?
Third, if ATF Agent John Dodson had not blown the whistle and revealed that an ATF operation called Fast and Furious was in play, no one could have linked the weapon found at Terry’s murder site to an operation that had to have been initiated and approved by high-levels officials at ATF and DOJ—and that story would have benefited not just Mexico, but proponents of stronger gun regulation here in the US, and in the US government, as well. Win-win.
The straw that broke ATF Agent Dodson’s back? Why he ‘blew the whistle’?
The realization that the weapon used to kill a fellow agent had fallen into the hands of his murderers via an operation sanctioned and implemented by US authorities.

CBS News reports that Dodson was not the only ATF agent worried about Fast and Furious:
One agent called the strategy “insane.” Another said: “We were fully aware the guns would probably be moved across the border to drug cartels where they could be used to kill.”But here’s what’s really amazing: as much testimony as we have, and despite threats by Representative Issa (R-Calif) to cite principals at ATF and DOJ for ‘contempt,’ the investigation into Fast and Furious seems to be going nowhere.
On the phone, one Project Gunrunner source (who didn’t want to be identified) told us just how many guns flooded the black market under ATF’s watchful eye. “The numbers are over 2,500 on that case by the way. That’s how many guns were sold – including some 50-calibers they let walk.”
Senior ATF officials, Eric Holder, the Attorney General of the United States, and, most importantly, President Barack Obama have discounted the need for Issa’s subpoenas, contending that an ‘in-house’ investigation by the Office of the Investigator General within Holder’s Department of Justice is all the situation warrants.

Calderon blames cartel violence in Mexico on 1) Washington’s lack of financial support and inadequate sharing of US intelligence, 2) the US government’s lax attitude toward cross-border arms trafficking, and 3) the drug habits of the American people.
In other words, send more money south, reinstate the ban on the sale of assault rifles in the US, and give America’s eight million drug addicts what they really need most–treatment and prevention (as opposed to prosecution and jail time).
Hmmmm . . .where have we heard this before? Could this be what they call ‘the intersection of politics and policy’?

Mexico’s president, says the WP article, was dead-on in his criticism of Mexico’s arrogant partner to the north, and it’s time for the US to eat humble pie—after it apologizes to Mexico and toughens its gun-control laws.
ATF, led by senior officials who, along with Eric Holder, share a predilection for tougher gun laws, also fell in behind Presidents Calderon and Obama when the report about Fast and Furious broke, presenting a strong and very silent front to the public.
Let’s not forget that one former ATF Acting Director, Michael Sullivan (an on-the-record advocate for stringent gun control) claimed his investigators were able to trace 90-95 percent of guns found in Mexico to the United States. (Note: the only ‘guns found in Mexico’ to which ATF eventually gains access are weapons we know can be traced back to the US, because they are cherry-picked and hand-delivered to US law enforcement by the Mexican authorities themselves.)
Another of Obama’s erstwhile nominees for ATF Director, Andrew Traver, who has headed ATF’s Chicago Office, is also an on-the-record spokesperson for tougher gun legislation. Speaking to Traver’s nomination, a few months ago, Rep. Chris Cox (R-CA) said, “You might as well put an arsonist in charge of the fire department.”
And where this crap may well have been intended to lead:

Let’s just suppose.
The AK-47 used to gun down fellow federal agent Brian Terry, once recovered, would no doubt have been identified by ATF as a weapon recently purchased from a US gun dealer on the southwest border (ATF would have had, after all, the serial numbers and other identifying documentation).
There would have been no need to mention the existence of any ATF ‘secret sting,’Operation Fast and Furious, or any links between these ATF endeavors and the movement of the weapon used to murder Terry across the US border and into the hands of his Mexican assailants.
Instead, the discovery and identification of the AK-47 used to gun down a US agent as one sold by a US gun dealer and then trafficked ‘illegally’ over the border into Mexico and into the possession of the cartels might have created a ‘perfect PR storm,’ neatly reinforcing the arguments put forth, first, by Mexico’s government, which contends there would be no gang violence in that country if the US didn’t supply gangs with guns; second, by higher-ups in the US government who favor tougher gun-control laws and non-intervention in Mexico (DOJ and the Obama Administration); and, third, by the public anti-gun lobby in America.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, these advances mean there is at least six times as much recoverable natural gas today as there was a decade ago.
Which is why we've got Obama & Co. sending Empty-Hat Salazar out to put as much area as possible off-limits for drilling; they don't WANT us to have that energy.
Without massive, permanent government subsidies or equally massive penalty taxes imposed on inexpensive fossil fuels like shale gas, wind power and solar power may never be able to compete. For that reason, some Greens hope to shut down shale gas and gas hydrate production in advance. In their haste, however, many Greens have hyped studies that turned out to be erroneous.
Yeah, kind of like the crap on globular warmering from the CRU. And the Robert Howarth study they note.
One of the best things about this story? It's in that nasty, right-wing, Gaia-hating publication known as Salon. Which means lots of their readers are trying to stuff their brain cells back through their ears.

I don't care what the calendar says,
it's summer. 90's and humid here, friend in Waco says 100's.
And I think the squash bugs are attacking in the garden. Since I love squash, this will be responded to by chemical attack later this evening when the wind drops.

Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST), a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) programme designed to spot people who are intending to commit a terrorist act, has in the past few months completed its first round of field tests at an undisclosed location in the northeast, Nature has learned.
Hmmm, y'know, in other circumstances these same clowns have derided that idea as 'profiling' and racist and bigoted and all... But then this is New and Approved(unlike that nonsense the Israelis use tha- oh, wait)
Steven Aftergood, a senior research analyst at the Federation of American Scientists, a think-tank based in Washington DC that promotes the use of science in policy-making, is pessimistic about the FAST tests. He thinks that they will produce a large proportion of false positives, frequently tagging innocent people as potential terrorists and making the system unworkable in a busy airport. "I believe that the premise of this approach — that there is an identifiable physiological signature uniquely associated with malicious intent — is mistaken. To my knowledge, it has not been demonstrated," he says. "Without it, the whole thing seems like a charade."
Or something to do, instead of actually doing something, maybe?

Since that post, additional interesting facts have come to light regarding former officer Thomas Mendiola, the Metro officer who contributed four of the seven shots fired into Erik Scott. Mendiola, as those who have followed this series will recall, fired those shots at close range into Scott’s back as he was falling, face first to the pavement. Mendiola also testified that he did not actually know if Officer William Mosher—who fired the two shots that began the barrage of fire in the midst of a crowd of shoppers that Metro caused to simultaneously leave the Costco—fired the shots he heard or if Erik Scott fired, but this did not prevent his firing into the back of a man who he could not positively say actually presented a danger to himself or others, though he certainly came to appreciate the necessity of saying that at the Inquest.
Probably both.

Second, (9) The shooting begins with 4-5 evenly spaced shots, apparently on semi-automatic. Those shots are quickly joined by a wild melee of fire which lasts about eight seconds, followed by a two second silence and one final shot. According to media accounts, the SWAT team “leader” said that the officers involved exhausted their ammunition. That’s not at all hard to believe, and it is possible that more than 71 rounds were fired.
Am I the only one who's bothered by that sequence? Especially that final shot?
Every officer on that team ought to be held personally liable for their actions. And Dupnik, as well, since he authorized this travesty.

Point this out to anyone who thinks getting rid of guns
is some kind of cure-all:
The attacker used a kitchen cleaver to kill the school's owner, Wu Hongying, and five boys and two girls on Wednesday morning before returning home and committing suicide, state media said.
The school owner's mother, who was wounded in the attack, later died at a hospital, Xinhua said.
Eleven other children from the attack remain hospitalized, including two with severe injuries, according to Xinhua.
What the hell's going on in the PRC?
It was the sixth such attack in China on schoolchildren since March.

An astounding Department of Justice threat to cancel airline flights to and from Texas, in addition to underhanded lobbying by TSA representatives, has killed efforts in the state to pass HB 1937, a bill that would have made invasive pat downs
by TSA agents a felony.
HB 1937, a bill that would have made it “A criminal act for security personnel to touch a person’s private areas without probable cause as a condition of travel or as a condition of entry into a public place,” was headed for an imminent Senate vote in Texas having already passed the House unanimously 138-0, before the federal government stepped in to nix the legislation.
In a letter sent to Texas lawmakers, including to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Speaker Joe Straus, the House Clerk, and the Senate Secretary, U.S. Attorney John E. Murphy threatened to cripple the airline industry in the state if legislators did not back down.
“If HR [sic] 1937 were enacted, the federal government would likely seek an emergency stay of the statute,” Murphy wrote. “Unless or until such a stay were granted, TSA would likely be required to cancel any flight or series of flights for which it could not ensure the safety of passengers and crew.”

He said the behaviour was turning freedom of information laws into a way to intimidate some scientists.

I've taken on this bike, and I found out a few things.
Speed-wise, at 75 this bike(VFR800) is turning a grand total of 5000rpm, and feels like it's just loafing along. Considering it doesn't redline till almost 12k, I guess it is.
I've been getting around 40mpg, in town and some highway; on the trip down I got just over 48; steady highway speeds make a difference(I'll add the mileage for the trip back when I tank up)(update: trip home, 56mpg; a horrendous crosswind/sort-of-quartering-in-places wind instead of a headwind made a helluva difference).
That Throttle Rocker works. Bad thing: you can't take your hand completely off the throttle to rest it. Good thing: you can just add or reduce pressure with your wrist to adjust speed. For longer trips(say 200 miles or more) I think I'd like a throttle lock, but this does work quite well.
This was a 'wind sweeping down the plain' day; I can't remember ever spending that much time in a constant lean before. Not in one day.
The weather weenies called this: right about the time I passed out of the 'high wind warning' area, it really did ease off.
I'll add a bit later; right now I think the bike has cooled off, so I'm going to wash the bugs off it.
