A bit more on the Mumbai type attacks over here and in Europe

When "red-teaming" potential attacks inside Western Europe and North America, counter-terror officials have often refused to even contemplate attacks like this. Mumbai-type attacks are seen as too complicated to war-game in training exercises. Moreover, the idea of a hostage situation with a gang of gunmen in a high-rise has been seen as too "Hollywood" ( Die Hard, to be more specific) to be tackled seriously.
Too 'Hollywood'. How many people writing blogs have specifically written about, worried about, exactly this kind scenario? Apparently, we're smarter than some of the officials, because any similarities to a movie didn't keep people from thinking about it.
The simple fact is that there's not enough police in any city in the world to deal with a multi-point attack like this. Which means if the bad guys get through the screen and into the country, they're half-way there to a successful attack. And considering the lack of enthusiasm by a lot of amnesty-minded socialists in DC, getting into this country isn't going to be all that difficult. Especially with the drug gangs in Mexico quite happy to help anyone in, with whatever equipment they have, for the right price. And a lot of Mexican officials happy to look the other way so long as the terrorists only attack us lousy Americans.
As Lawdog put it a while back,

Given that terrorism isn't going away any time soon, I'd not bet the ranch on that, but that's a discussion for another time.

I wonder how the jerks involved in this will like being prosecuted under the 'hate crimes' laws they're so fond of pushing?

Oh, it's been such a FUN day...
Start with about an hour and a half of sleep. Get up, go to work. Get off, help someone with a flat, take care of a couple of things and then get to the doctors office for the appointment. You're shown to an exam room after only a few minutes, great, right?
It would be. If you hadn't been left there, apparently forgotten, for damn near an hour after the time of the appointment. Which would have been longer, except that at that point you said the hell with it and left. It took about 30 minutes to get home, and right after you walk in the phone rings. "Mr. Firehand?"
"Yes."
"This is Doctor Jerkwad's office, are you all right?"
"Except for being left in the exam room for an hour, yes."
Pause.
"Ah, Doctor Jerkwad just checked your room and you weren't there."
"Yeah, and nobody noticed me leaving, either, did they?"
Another pause.
"I'm sorry for your wait-"
"Yeah. Thanks." Click.

The racks that were empty used to be filled with fighting rifles, and Americans have, in the last week, literally purchased every functional fighting rifle they can get their hands on, completely depleting the sales pipeline.
You can attribute the behavior to either "hoarding" or "gearing up", but I don't think it matters.
What I do think is very important is that this has actually happened: humpteen zillion arms have been transfered to private hands and scattered all over the nation, with no realistic hope of ever tracing or getting them back. Range day, load tryout
One of the cartridges I mess with is the .38 Smith & Wesson, the ancestor of the .38 Special. It's a shorter case, with a larger diameter. The heaviest load for it was used by the British as their original load in the Mk IV Webley as the .380/200, and it was also used by some police departments here: it's a 200-grain roundnose bullet at about 650 feet per second. I've heard it had a pretty good record as a fight-stopper, but have no accounts to list. The Brits wound up, due to the Geneva Convention having a problem with non-jacketed bullets, going to a 176-grain jacketed bullet(long taper with a small round nose), and from what I've read it lost much of the effectiveness with this load. In any case...
There are a lot of old revolvers out there, S&W and Colt and Webley and Iver Johnson and others, chambered for this cartridge. Some, like the Webley and Enfield and IJ, are top-break designs and some of those should be approached with caution: some of those designs are stronger than others, and some may not have aged well, especially if they'd seen much use. The Webley/Enfield, for instance, has a pretty strong lockup involving good amounts of steel interlocking, while some have a spring-latch that's not as strong. So if you're going to shoot one of them, check it out carefully before you take it to the range.
Reasons for handloading this are primarily
Expense. Factory ammo for this seems to be limited to a 145-grain roundnose, and fairly expensive.
Accuracy. The factory stuff tends to be loaded down due to the company not knowing if it'll be put in a vault-strong S&W or Webley or a worn-out old Iver Johnson or some Spanish copy, so they keep pressures low. Which usually leads to ammo that hits above or below point of aim, sometimes drastically so.
I originally wanted to duplicate the .380/200 load for a Enfield revolver so it would hit where I was aiming; factory stuff hit low. Lyman makes a mold for a 200-grain roundnose .38 bullet, and some digging around found some load information. I use the bullet as-cast, lubed with Lee Liquid Alox, and wound up using Unique powder; the load hits right at 650fps and hits dead-on point of aim at ten yards. Good load, and I think it would work as a defense load( I don't know if the bullet would stay straight and maybe overpenetrate, or yaw after impact and spin). But I also wanted a practice load with a lighter bullet for target-punching. So I tried these:
The left is a 148-grain wadcutter, the right a 162-grain semi-wadcutter. Both from .38 molds, used as-cast with Liquid Alox. They're seated out to keep the overall length and depth in the case as my measurements indicate proper; like I said, it's a short case. Both use Unique. I tried them both out today, but no targets to show; did not have a solid rest and some of the lights in the range were out, so pretty targets will have to wait a while. However, both seemed to shoot to point of aim, both cut nice, sharp holes and had light recoil. The wadcutter seemed to group a bit tighter, but without a rest that's not something I'd swear to.
So two good possibilities for target loads, which means I'll have to load some more for testing(work, work, work, to quote Wash).

The vicious attack that left the humvee destroyed and several of the Marines pinned down in the kill zone sparked an intense eight-hour battle as the platoon desperately fought to recover their comrades. After recovering the Marines trapped in the kill zone, another platoon sergeant personally led numerous attacks on enemy fortified positions while the platoon fought house to house and trench to trench in order to clear through the enemy ambush site.
“The biggest thing to take from that day is what Marines can accomplish when they’re given the opportunity to fight,” the sniper said. “A small group of Marines met a numerically superior force and embarrassed them in their own backyard. The insurgents told the townspeople that they were stronger than the Americans, and that day we showed them they were wrong.”
Oh, yeah.
And here's an example of 'get the job done no matter what' mindset:
During the battle, the designated marksman single handedly thwarted a company-sized enemy RPG and machinegun ambush by reportedly killing 20 enemy fighters with his devastatingly accurate precision fire. He selflessly exposed himself time and again to intense enemy fire during a critical point in the eight-hour battle for Shewan in order to kill any enemy combatants who attempted to engage or maneuver on the Marines in the kill zone. What made his actions even more impressive was the fact that he didn’t miss any shots, despite the enemies’ rounds impacting within a foot of his fighting position.
“I was in my own little world,” the young corporal said. “I wasn’t even aware of a lot of the rounds impacting near my position, because I was concentrating so hard on making sure my rounds were on target.”
Hell, yeah. Corporal, if we ever meet, the drinks are on me. And that goes for your whole damn unit in this mess(yes, I do realize I might have to take out a loan to pay for it).
Here's a question for you: how many times in this war have we heard of something like this, our guys being ambushed and kicking the crap out of the bad guys, and our media never mentioned it? Or gave a brief "X soldiers killed/wounded in an ambush" while NEVER mentioning the end result? I guess they were too busy getting geared up to not investigate Obama & Co. this election season.

Two things to read
On the ownership of arms:
Joel Barlow, a political theorist of Jefferson's time, wrote tellingly: "[The disarming of citizens has] a double effect, it palsies the hand and brutalizes the mind: a habitual disuse of physical forces totally destroys the moral [force]; and men lose at once the power of protecting themselves, and of discerning the cause of their oppression.
And on the subject of our media(bees pee upon them):
I have to disagree. I think the media performed flawlessly during the two year election cycle. They managed the story, shielded their candidate, attacked the opposition, sat on damaging stories, and in short did everything a good state run media should do during an election cycle.
In fact, the only sign of their incompetence was that McCain kept the race much closer than he should have, but that failure might be more due to the education system failing to properly propagandize the young voters, although they'll probably blame home-schoolers for that.

Including looking her in the face and lying, over and over. The flip-flops? "Oh, he had to say those things earlier, and now I think his positions are better since he's shown himself to have lied to us before." Well, he was lying to you then, or he's lying to you now, maybe both. We all know that old joke: "How do you know he's lying? His lips are moving." Perfect example, courtesy of The Obama. And that people keep excusing this crap is part of why we're in the hold we're in.

At least that’s what the Economist reports. It says a “directed-energy weapon” named Zeus (presumably because of his fondness for hurling lightning bolts) has been deployed in the back of a Humvee in Iraq. It’s being tested by soldiers who are using its laser beam to detonate roadside bombs from a safe distance of 300 meters.
Now, this is something! A real, useful, vehicle-portable laser than can help take care of a problem. Several, really; IEDs, unexploded ordnance and so forth. Instead of having some EOD tech wire each shell or mine, clear it with this. And then we come to the second article:
The FIRESTRIKE(tm) laser is a line replaceable system that allows for scaling a laser weapon to desired power levels for specific warfighting applications and platforms. Northrop Grumman believes that FIRESTRIKE(tm) laser will form the backbone of future laser weapon systems.
You can put together up to eight of these to achieve the maximum power available, although that would so much electric power that the military would have to mount them in tanks. Which, mind you, I bet it's exactly what they have in mind.

At least that’s what the Economist reports. It says a “directed-energy weapon” named Zeus (presumably because of his fondness for hurling lightning bolts) has been deployed in the back of a Humvee in Iraq. It’s being tested by soldiers who are using its laser beam to detonate roadside bombs from a safe distance of 300 meters.
Now, this is something! A real, useful, vehicle-portable laser than can help take care of a problem. Several, really; IEDs, unexploded ordnance and so forth. Instead of having some EOD tech wire each shell or mine, clear it with this. And then we come to the second article:
The FIRESTRIKE(tm) laser is a line replaceable system that allows for scaling a laser weapon to desired power levels for specific warfighting applications and platforms. Northrop Grumman believes that FIRESTRIKE(tm) laser will form the backbone of future laser weapon systems.
You can put together up to eight of these to achieve the maximum power available, although that would so much electric power that the military would have to mount them in tanks. Which, mind you, I bet it's exactly what they have in mind.

Powerline notes the chance that if judges in CA tell the voters they're stupid and throw out the Prop. 8 vote, the voters have a way to go after them. And they should.
There was a gun show in town this weekend, and I went for a bit. It was what most in the area have unfortunately become: small. No ammo dealers, no parts(except for old bits & pieces some people had out. There have been two groups doing shows the last few years, and they tend to put them too close together, and it's run things down a lot. The only ones you can count on being decent are the Hall of Fame and Sooner shows, and they're down from what they used to be, I think because of the overdoing by the two groups.
Anything with AR or AK as a model prefix was selling fast, except for some AK variants that the owners had WAY overpriced.
I now have somewhat more constructive things to do, see you folks later.

Victory In Iraq Day
And since the morons in Congress mostly don't have the balls to say it flat-out, or- in some cases- don't want it to be true, we have to say it:
WE WON THE WAR IN IRAQ
The bad guys have had their collective ass kicked. To borrow some words,
"By every measure, The United States and coalition forces have conclusively defeated all enemies in Iraq, pacified the country, deposed the previous regime, successfully helped to establish a new functioning democratic government, and suppressed any lingering insurgencies. The war has come to an end. And we won.
What more indication do you need? An announcement from the outgoing Bush administration? It's not gonna happen. An announcement from the incoming Obama administration? That's really not gonna happen. A declaration of victory by the media? Please. Don't make me laugh. A concession of surrender by what few remaining insurgents remain in hiding? Forget about it."
So we say it. To every Soldier, Marine, Airman and Sailor who put their ass on the line, to those who paid the price, we say thank you. The God-cursed politicians may not say it, but we do.

That’s right. Activists have published an “Anti-Gay Black List” of Prop. 8 donors on the Internet. If the tables had been turned and Prop. 8 proponents created such an enemies’ list, everyone in Hollywood would be screaming “McCarthyism” faster than you can count to eight. A Los Angeles restaurant whose manager made a small donation to the Prop. 8 campaign has been besieged nightly by hordes of protesters who have disrupted the business, intimidated patrons, and brought employees there to tears. In fear for their jobs and their lives, workers at El Coyote Mexican Café pooled together $500 to pay off the bullies.
The only proper response to the threats these dirtbags are making is the racking of a shotgun. If any of you happen to find this post, and don't like it, I have a suggestion: grow up and start acting like a rational human being, not a spoiled brat with a machete.

THIS is what Obama wants for Attorney General
Earlier this year, Eric Holder--along with Janet Reno and several other former officials from the Clinton Department of Justice--co-signed an amicus brief in District of Columbia v. Heller. The brief was filed in support of DC's ban on all handguns, and ban on the use of any firearm for self-defense in the home. The brief argued that the Second Amendment is a "collective" right, not an individual one, and asserted that belief in the collective right had been the consistent policy of the U.S. Department of Justice since the FDR administration. A brief filed by some other former DOJ officials (including several Attorneys General, and Stuart Gerson, who was Acting Attorney General until Janet Reno was confirmed)took issue with the Reno-Holder brief's characterization of DOJ's viewpoint.
Aww, what's a little lying about a legal viewpoint? Especially in a lawyer sworn to the truth? Who works for the government?
But at the least, the Reno-Holder brief accurately expressed the position of the Department of Justice when Janet Reno was Attorney General and Eric Holder was Deputy Attorney General. At the oral argument before the Fifth Circuit in United States v. Emerson, the Assistant U.S. Attorney told the panel that the Second Amendment was no barrier to gun confiscation, not even of the confiscation of guns from on-duty National Guardsmen.
I mean, hell, why should the Guard be immune to having their arms seized? After all, they're just more of the peasants who need the gummint to control their lives, aren't they?
After 9/11, he penned a Washington Post op-ed, "Keeping Guns Away From Terrorists" arguing that a new law should give "the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms a record of every firearm sale." He also stated that prospective gun buyers should be checked against the secret "watch lists" compiled by various government entities. (In an Issue Paper on the watch list proposal, I quote a FBI spokesman stating that there is no cause to deny gun ownership to someone simply because she is on the FBI list.)
After the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the D.C. handgun ban and self-defense ban were unconstitutional in 2007, Holder complained that the decision "opens the door to more people having more access to guns and putting guns on the streets."

This is getting rediculous
Went to the Sportsmans Warehouse where I usually get bullets and primers nowadays. Empty spaces outnumbered in-stock bullets by about 4-1. Rifle, handgun, all. I did get my primers; I wanted a brick(1000), but got the last 800 CCI Large Rifle they had.
Lots of rifles and shotguns on the racks, but NO AR15 variants. None. When I got the .22's at Academy yesterday, they had one of the new Sig variants, and that was all.

The other day one of the big stories was the #2 Nutcase of al Qaeda called Obama a house negro. Except that most of the media weenies just couldn't bring themselves to report that: it was some kind of 'racial epithet'. This just in: John Murtha(D Sleazebag-PA, and thanks a lot for reelecting him, you morons) is a chickenshit. Who doesn't have the balls to stand behind his words, and has a government lawyer(i.e., paid for by other people) saying "...a member of Congress is “absolutely immune” from a defamation suit because there’s no circumstance in which speaking to the media is not within the scope of a lawmaker’s employment." In other words, silly peasant, the claim is it doesn't matter where he is or what he does, Murtha(and every other moron in Congress) can slander and lie about people and has immunity from being nailed for it. Which is patent bullcrap, same as the crap a year or so ago that their offices are immune from being searched in a criminal investigation("Your home or business can be searched, but not OUR offices, you peasants!"). On this, I can't decide which would be the best attention-getter for these politicians: tar & feathers, a whip, or just go straight to the rope/lamppost thing.
With all the attention on pirates lately, and various hand-wringing "What can we do?" fretting, I'll make a suggestion: British & American* navies in particular, start sinking them. Just like we did for so long. They're at sea, they're pirates attacking people, "CIC Bridge, commence fire." Cuts down on recidivism something fierce.

Word from the son

is today. Which, to my shame, I forgot about completely with all the insanity running around the last while.
What I really wanted to buy, everyone was out of. And I mean everyone. To make up partially for that, Academy has the 525-packs of Remington .22 hollowpoints on sale, so I got two. That makes 1050 rounds of future noisemaking. Since the day was officially expanded to Ammo Week, I'll check for the other stuff tomorrow(weather supposed to turn ratty, so taking care of outdoor stuff while it's decent outside today).

I bet many muslims 'are outraged'
over this:
MÜNSTER, Germany -- Muhammad Sven Kalisch, a Muslim convert and Germany's first professor of Islamic theology, fasts during the Muslim holy month, doesn't like to shake hands with Muslim women and has spent years studying Islamic scripture. Islam, he says, guides his life.
So it came as something of a surprise when Prof. Kalisch announced the fruit of his theological research. His conclusion: The Prophet Muhammad probably never existed.
And his colleagues, too:
"We had no idea he would have ideas like this," says Thomas Bauer, a fellow academic at Münster University who sat on a committee that appointed Prof. Kalisch. "I'm a more orthodox Muslim than he is, and I'm not a Muslim."
Which would tell the moron something, if he thought about it.
Prof. Kalisch, who insists he's still a Muslim, says he knew he would get in trouble but wanted to subject Islam to the same scrutiny as Christianity and Judaism. German scholars of the 19th century, he notes, were among the first to raise questions about the historical accuracy of the Bible.
Apparently the professor doesn't understand that he's not allowed to raise such questions about Islam; that's a protected species of religion.
"Of course Muhammad existed," says Tilman Nagel, a scholar in Göttingen and author of a new book, "Muhammad: Life and Legend." The Prophet differed from the flawless figure of Islamic tradition, Prof. Nagel says, but "it is quite astonishing to say that thousands and thousands of pages about him were all forged" and there was no such person.
Um, Mr. Nagel, that would be 'fictionalized' not 'forged'.
All the same, Prof. Nagel has signed a petition in support of Prof. Kalisch, who has faced blistering criticism from Muslim groups and some secular German academics. "We are in Europe," Prof. Nagel says. "Education is about thinking, not just learning by heart."
Apparently Prof. Nagel hasn't been paying attention to what's been happening around him in the 'thinking' process of Europe, especially that touching on Islam and muslims. Speaking of which,

Tam has noted some things on which she is
unplugged from current music, etc. I sympathize. Or agree with. Whatever. In the truck I tend to listen to a local AM station during the day for news and talk shows; evening I may try a couple of the FM stations, but not often; just don't like most of what they play, so on goes the CD player.
Back a couple of years I worked a lot of late nights. We had cable and could watch it when things were quiet, and sometimes I'd just have it on for background noise. One of the channels I'd turn on was VH1 for music, which allowed me to catch some new music I liked, and I'd just ignore the rest. Then VH1 started doing the same thing MTV had done: only playing music videos for a few hours very late night/early morning, the rest of the time it was idiot 'reality' shows and excuses for current pop or other idiots to spout off about things. CMT's about as bad last time I looked, so started ignoring those channels completely. Which hasn't exactly troubled my life.
Movies? Rarely go to a theater; most of the stuff is crap, and the few that aren't, unless I can catch a discount showing, aren't worth the money and pain in the ass of going to a theater(hello, DVD).
So I'm in the same boat. Which seems to be sailing along nicely, thank you. I still haven't decided if I'm going to get one of the converters for HDTV in February, or just use the tv for watching discs and tapes. Mind you, if I could get cable with maybe eight channels(Discovery, History, etc.) I'd probably buy it, but the whole package? With all those channels I'd never watch? Nope.

A somewhat better day than the last couple
Friday I wound up leaving work early, due to a certain uncontrollable need to evacuate my system of everything I'd eaten over the last, oh, 12 hours or so. Which did cause certain problems, among them not being able to answer the phone while taking care of said need.
Which led to Saturday, which was cold and windy, which in this case was fine, as I had no desire to go outside and do anything.
So today started out a bit cold, but warmed up nicely. Good on two counts:
First, I was fully over the "You didn't need that in your system" problem, and
Second, I'd promised a friend to help him put up a storage shed. Which mostly got done.
"Mostly" as in all framing, all walls and about 1/3 of the roof. This is the third of these aluminum sheds I've done/helped with, and if this'd been the same size as mine we'd have finished it. But he got a BIG one, so not quite.
If you get the urge to put one of these in the yard, I have one piece of advice: level, solid base for the floor. Doesn't have to be a slab, but level and solid. Because any unevenness in the floor, or if it's not square, will cause holes to not line up, thus causing large amounts of language practice and commentary on the designers of these instruments of mental torture. When I did mine I leveled a space a little bigger than the floor, then put down a bunch of the half-cinder blocks: one at each corner, one on each end and in the center of the doors, and one everywhere the floor joists either joined the outside frame or crossed. Every damn one of them leveled using a long piece of angle iron and a level. And then, before actually screwed any pieces, checked the floor frame for square about five times, making tiny adjustments. Took a while, but worth it: everything lined up, and it's been very solid; no apparent shifting over three years. One thing I did do later was lift up the floor panels and put a bunch of pea gravel between all the blocks and around the edges; the yard has a fair amount of slope back there and that keeps it from washing out under the thing.
Oh, and get a friend. Especially if there's any wind, those light panels have an amazing amount of sail area.

However. Far as I'm concerned, if this garbage is your reaction to a loss at the polls, fuck you. You don't deserve to win in a legal vote if this is your reaction to this loss. You're acting like a bunch of Soviet commissars and deserve to be treated as such, you and every suckup politician involved.

Let's see, Memphis PD spent about $88,000 trying to find the ID of a blogger who was critical of the PD:

Even more persuasive, there are tons of reasons why Fan and Fred should evanesce. Their business model--publicly subsidized but privately profited firms--yields massively leveraged portfolios, incompetent but grossly compensated management, a huge lobbying establishment and political pork galore.
Of course there was no rejoicing from one of Fan and Fred's chief cheerleaders--Congressman Barney Frank. When asked about the shrinkage of Fan and Fred's portfolios, he responded: "Good luck on that." And then went on to characterize such an idea as a "sop" to the right, not a policy possibility. Simply put: It ain't going to happen on his watch.
Which, of course, means he and his buttmonkeys sticking their hands deeper into our pockets to fuel his passion for this crap. Wasn't there once an anti-pickpocket device that was a kind of pocket guillotine?
Ohio needs to clean up it's damned government. Or(maybe and/or) get out a lot of rope:

He said the national media did not have reporters in Toledo, so the attorney general's office was helping them out with public records.
These people need to be fired, and then criminally prosecuted. There is NO EXCUSE for this kind of corruption. None. And I hope Joe sues the collective ass off the people and agencies involved. Maybe, just maybe, that'll get their attention.

Those are two different issues — people face criminal charges all the time and don’t commit suicide. It’s not an inevitable consequence.”
O’Hara added: “We have to continue on campus to educate ourselves and to be vigilant about sexual harassment and help everyone understand that as an academic community, these things aren’t to be tolerated.” At the same time, he said that the two deaths made him wonder about the treatment of “alleged perpetrators.” It is important to remember, he said, that “being accused doesn’t mean that something happened.”.
OK, anyone who thinks that ANY university hasn't already had 'watch out for sexual harassment classes' until everyone's sick of them is a moron. Second, what seems to be missing in the 'we don't understand' crap is recognition that an accusation of this type can ruin someones career even when proven innocent. And some people just can't face that. Were they guilty? Don't know. Do know that bullcrap accusations have been used against mainly men far too many times to ignore the possibility. And with the examples of lives and careers ruined, it's not surprising some would decide they couldn't deal with it. Don't say it's a good way to deal with it, but understand why it happens.
And, just to close this, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, as dishonest a name as a group every came up with, wants higher taxes on alcohol to save lives. And, in truth, to pump up the tax base:
”In addition to public health implications, state governments should re-examine their alcohol excise taxes on for fiscal reasons, said George Hacker, director of Alcohol Policies Project for the Center for Science in the Public Interest.”
Lots of lawyers wonder why people don't respect them for their intrinsic worth, since they're the most important people in the country; specifically, trial lawyers:

Let's see, Memphis PD spent about $88,000 trying to find the ID of a blogger who was critical of the PD:
The legal bill for that suit has arrived, and The Commercial Appeal reports it totals about $88,000. The city’s legal department declined giving a breakdown on the legal expenses, and the police department had no comment.
When the suit was filed earlier this year, authorities said they were upset because a picture of an undercover officer was posted on the site. It was later determined, however, that the officer’s picture was also on the police department Web site.

Connecticut conservative radio talk-show host Tom Scott says up until now, fellow senators and the media have not questioned Dodd about his personal scandal.

Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain's name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.
But wait! It gets better.

Running around in circles
may be good exercise, but it doesn't let you get a hell of a lot done. Especially on sidelines like this. Which is why not much the last couple of days.
Right now the wind is blowing out of the north behind the cold front that moved through a couple of hours ago. Since they're talking about a possible freeze tonight and a definite tomorrow night I picked everything in the garden that was ready, and I've got the necessary vents around the house covered.
One nice thing about this part of the country is there are lots of times I can ride through the winter; sometimes just a wee bit on the chilly side, but I can. Next couple of nights are not among those times. I could if I had to, but since I don't have to... Coldest I've ridden in was mid-20's, several days when didn't have a choice. And it sucked. At the time I rode a little Honda Rebel 250. I never failed to start, but that little air-cooled engine could not get up to operating temperature, so had to keep the choke on a bit. I made it there and back, but it was fairly awful.
Got some stuff to write about, which I hope to get posted in the next couple of days. I now return you to whatever you were doing.

As to the run on gunny stuff,
earlier today went by a local shop I hadn't been to in a while. They make AR15 rifles in various configurations and there's usually about a half-dozen on the rack. Today, there was one left-hander and that's it. Just about all the AR mags were gone, most of the AK mags gone, no surplus 7.62x54r, lots of Wolf 7.62x39 at much higher prices than before. They were busy enough they were letting the answering machine take the phone and picking up if needed; everybody was filling out paperwork, calling it in, showing guns or checking people out.
The owner said he'd told a guy yesterday(looking for an AR) "Just come in and see what's here." "When will you have more in?" "Sir, I don't know what I'll have left by the time you get here, let alone tomorrow."
Busy, busy, busy.

And some general stuff after my last depressing question
Heard from a guy who'd ordered some stuff from AIM yesterday; they told him they were about eight days behind on shipping, so his order made yesterday should ship on the 19th. And everyone else seems to be about the same. Out of curiosity I looked at Midway for AK magazines: EVERY ONE was listed as 'out of stock, backordered'. I'd imagine their AR mags are in about the same state. I wonder if the GFWs have any real idea what salesmen they are?
I halfway wish I still had kids in junior high-high school; I'd arm them with things like this and send them off to cause teachers to pull their hair out. Daughter already did that on the 2nd, this would've made it even better, and spread even more information to the other kids. Thus causing other teachers in other classes to attack their scalps.
Yeah, The Obama will be tough on terrorism, oh yeah.
Speaking of The One, take a look at this over at Clayton Cramer. Interesting. As is the absolute idiocy of this.
And at Blackfive a link to HuffPost. The post itself is sraightforward: how a bunch of troops at the sharp end reacted to the election. But the comments... "Aw, you poor stupid(fascistbastard!) soldiers, you just don't understand what's actually Good and Right, or you would worship The Obama too." I didn't read too far.
As to the last, a few months ago read a book called Deer Hunting with Jesus. Short version: sensitive, arts-loving boy grows up among the philistines, escapes to heaven(liberal large cities); comes back as an adult and writes about the stupid, unlettered, etc. people who just don't know how they're being fooled about
the war
the economy
religion
unions
and just about everything else. How they just didn't understand that if unions(run by young, progressive organizers) took over the places they work they'd be in heaven; that if the gummint took over their health care, heaven; and so on. Through it all, the tolerance(at best) to utter contempt(for the most part) he felt for the people around him was kind of amazing. Which seems to sum up the feelings of most of the commenters about the troops: "We have civilian control because you just want to kill people instead of solving the problem; you're just not smart enough to make such decisions; how dare you actually speak an opinion?; The Obama will save you, too, if you give him time." I have a serious question about trust
Specifically, trust in the system: the Justice Department, the FEC, the Congress.
Can we trust them? Should we?
I'm not talking about the normal, "We're watching you" toward Congress, I mean flatly can we trust them to have the interests of this country at heart?
We already know a lot of the weenies in House and Senate do not; if you'd had any doubts, Schumer comparing political speech he doesn't like to pornography being broadcast that needs regulation should have killed them. There are far too many in both Houses who're more concerned with personal and party power than this country; they've violated their oaths of office and, if the people back home were more worried about things like honor and truth and freedom than about "He's the Party candidate!" these clowns would've been, as my old boss used to say, kicking rocks down the road years ago. Instead, they keep voting for them. Barney Frank(Corrupticrat-MA) for instance; there's no telling how much of the loss of business and population that state is (supposedly)dealing with is directly connected to his actions, but they keep voting for him. Corrupt bastard will probably be in office until he dies. And now we add in the 'Fairness Doctrine' hammer these jerks want to use on the media that doesn't kiss their ass, which appears to be affecting what some media outlets do. But let's move on from Congress for a moment.
Is there, WILL there be, any criminal investigation of Frank? Or Sen. Chris Countrywide Dodd? Any RICO, or any other, investigation of ACORN and vote fraud, and credit card fraud in this election? Almost certainly not, which brings up "Can we, SHOULD we, trust the Justice Department?" Because if they don't have the balls or integrity to do their damn jobs in this, why should we trust them to be honest, and honorable, in doing their jobs on anything else?
We've got the word that the FEC is probably going to give The Obama's campaign a pass on an audit, while McCain's will definitely face an audit. The FEC has been a group of politically-motivated jerks for years, we already know they're not trustworthy. This just makes it worse, in-your-face "We do EVERYTHING to suit our personal politics" bad.
We had the examples after 9/11 of the FBI and Justice(?) failing to do their damn jobs for political reasons, and it's worse now with the crap that's come out. Add in the way so many people have been screwed over for bullcrap 'violations' for the sake of padding the agencies' numbers and making the politicians who control their budgets happy, and how can I trust any of these agencies? Or the people who work there? On anything?

Australian Etiquette
WEDDINGS
1.. Livestock is a poor choice for a wedding gift.
2.. Kissing the bride for more than five seconds may cause a drop in your popularity. (Excessive use of the tongue is also considered out of place)
3.. For the groom, at least, rent a tux. A tracksuit with a cummerbund and a clean football jumper can create a tacky appearance.
4.. Though uncomfortable, say "yes" to socks and shoes for the occasion.

1.. Dim your headlights for approaching vehicles, even if your gun is loaded and the roo is in your rifle sight.
2.. When entering a roundabout, the vehicle with the largest roo bar doesn't always have the right of way.

Show report
Ok, first: big show. BIG show. Somewhere between 3-4000 tables of just about every kind of goodness you can think of related to firearms, though not a lot of reloading gear; a number of places with powder and primers, a couple with a bunch of dies, and the usual scatter of people with a few die sets put out.
Second: ammo. My favorite ammo guy was there, but he had no individual boxes of any cartridge; cases only. Bunch of other dealers had boxes, and lots of cases. And my God how they moved. Especially the usual suspects: 7.62x39, 7.62x54r, .308, .223*, 9mm and- to a lesser extent- .45acp. As in my ammo guy had several empty pallets when we left Sunday, and so did the other dealers**. And a place called Blue Star that sells mostly brass and bullets(some powder and primers) was doing a brisk business open to close; they always do, but more people seemed to be buying large amounts.
Third: magazines. Damn. Every dealer specializing in them was busy, again open to close. One guy had a crate- as in wood crate about 2x2x4’- of AK mags, and it was almost empty by 5pm Saturday. Every dealer didn’t sell out of them, but they sold a LOT. Also of the other ‘big demand’ item, AR15 mags. A lot of standard-capacity pistol mags of the type the GFWs call ‘high-capacity’ were selling a lot, too. Hell, everything was selling well, just those more so than others.
Fourth: if anything, the tendency of some people to overprice firearms was worse. I mean, a Inland M1 Carbine, all late features, isn’t worth $2000. Period. Kind of amazing what some people were asking for things. Collectable Winchester rifles and such I can understand, but some of the stuff… Couple of times I had the desire to ask how they’d managed to hide the thick gold plating that would be the only reason that thing would be worth what they were asking.
I’d hoped to find some of the Remington Eley .22 ammo to feed the Enfield trainer, but no luck. And no, I did not buy the brick of Lapua Midas to try out(I don’t buy ammo to try out when it’s in a brick that runs more than a hundred dollars). And I just realized I forgot to check Blue Star for 7.62x54r and 7.5x55 brass. Dammit. I hope I’ve still got their card. Last year there was a guy with a powder measure he’d designed to handle stick powders without the problem most measures have; wasn’t there this time, and I’d hoped to get one. Have to check around and see if he’s advertising.
And it's not gunny related, but the concessions at the show? The drinks were horribly overpriced, but the food wasn't; and it was pretty good. They've got a barbeque sandwich and a philly beef that's damn good.
All in all, a damn good show, everything from Class III stuff(make a deposit and go do the paperwork) to plinkers to big-game rifles to antiques(including the brass-barrel blunderbuss my daughter would love), bayonets to pocketknives to swords, targets to (some) loading gear.
*Yes, I know, in military it’s 7.62x51 and 5.56x45; bite me, I call it .308 and .223

Especially the usual suspects: 7.62x39, 7.62x54r, .308, .223*, 9mm and- to a lesser extent- .45acp. As in my ammo guy had several empty pallets when we left Sunday, and so did the other dealers**. And a place called Blue Star that sells mostly brass and bullets(some powder and primers) was doing a brisk business open to close; they always do, but more people seemed to be buying large amounts.
Third: magazines. Damn. Every dealer specializing in them was busy, again open to close. One guy had a crate- as in wood crate about 2x2x4’- of AK mags, and it was almost empty by 5pm Saturday. Every dealer didn’t sell out of them, but they sold a LOT. Also of the other ‘big demand’ item, AR15 mags. A lot of standard-capacity pistol mags of the type the GFWs call ‘high-capacity’ were selling a lot, too. Hell, everything was selling well, just those more so than others.
Fourth: if anything, the tendency of some people to overprice firearms was worse. I mean, a Inland M1 Carbine, all late features, isn’t worth $2000. Period. Kind of amazing what some people were asking for things. Collectable Winchester rifles and such I can understand, but some of the stuff… Couple of times I had the desire to ask how they’d managed to hide the thick gold plating that would be the only reason that thing would be worth what they were asking.
I’d hoped to find some of the Remington Eley .22 ammo to feed the Enfield trainer, but no luck. And no, I did not buy the brick of Lapua Midas to try out(I don’t buy ammo to try out when it’s in a brick that runs more than a hundred dollars). And I just realized I forgot to check Blue Star for 7.62x54r and 7.5x55 brass. Dammit. I hope I’ve still got their card. Last year there was a guy with a powder measure he’d designed to handle stick powders without the problem most measures have; wasn’t there this time, and I’d hoped to get one. Have to check around and see if he’s advertising.
And it's not gunny related, but the concessions at the show? The drinks were horribly overpriced, but the food wasn't; and it was pretty good. They've got a barbeque sandwich and a philly beef that's damn good.
All in all, a damn good show, everything from Class III stuff(make a deposit and go do the paperwork) to plinkers to big-game rifles to antiques(including the brass-barrel blunderbuss my daughter would love), bayonets to pocketknives to swords, targets to (some) loading gear.
*Yes, I know, in military it’s 7.62x51 and 5.56x45; bite me, I call it .308 and .223

Show over
Back home after two days of being submerged in lots of gunny goodness. Miniguns and gatling guns and rifles and pistols and scatterguns and knives and parts and....and... damn, it was nice.
