I think what you were talking about, though, also has everything to do with such hubris that human beings can do a lot better than God. God doesn’t exist. So, I think partly a religious point of view would not look at any of these subjects the way an anti-religious person would. They don’t wish to be understood because then they might have to pay some consequence for what they’re saying. And it’s so affected the mandarin language that it’s hopeless. Why am I not surprised the bastards behind this are from the Dark & Fascist State

That Street Cop Training checklist, which offers handy excuses for officers keen to conduct searches for drugs or seizable cash, figures prominently in a recent report from Kevin Walsh, New Jersey's acting comptroller. The report criticizes the New Jersey company for encouraging officers to make or extend stops without reasonable suspicion and for promoting a "warrior" mentality that fosters the excessive use of force. "We found so many examples of so many instructors promoting views and tactics that were wildly inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, harassing, and, in some cases, likely illegal," Walsh said when he released the report this week. "The fact that the training undermined nearly a decade of police reforms—and New Jersey dollars paid for it—is outrageous."
It's basically "Here's how you can use ANYTHING someone does as an excuse to screw with them."
Not to mention 'Screw with people just because you want a 'baseline' to work from."
Another speaker at the conference, Boston police officer Tommy Brooks, suggested pulling over "20 people in a row for the sole purpose of asking them a series of questions," such as where they are coming from and where they are going. That experiment, Brooks said, would establish a "general baseline" of "how people answer questions," which the officer could later use to identify "weird" responses from other drivers. Helpful or not, the research project that Brooks recommended would be blatantly unconstitutional. "Without an objectively reasonable basis for the stop," Walsh notes, "those stops, as described, would violate the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable seizures."
Crap like this has spread over time, and it's a big reason- especially in some places- nobody wants to deal with the cops: you don't/can't trust them to follow the rules. And, when they get caught and slapped down, they can claim Qualified Immunity and not pay any personal price, while you've been screwed over and had to pay a price even though you were innocent.

A David Drake story
When son was on his first deployment to Iraq, one of the occasions he was able to call, when I asked if he needed anything, he said "Books. I need stuff to read, sci-fi, adventure, stuff like that." So, to the used bookstore.
Note: 19 paperbacks would fit in one large flat-rate box without too much bulging.*
One thing I included was the five books of 'The General' series by Drake and Stirling, which I did tell him I wanted back, as two of them were just about impossible to replace. Well, two reasons for those five: damn good stories; =second was that in the first book a unit on a raid in enemy territory(desert, muslim enemy government) had seized a bleepload of checked scarves that became a unit symbol, and I'd suggested he find a similar scarf and get a picture of himself with it. He did, in full battle rattle. I found a email address and sent the pic to Drake labeled 'Sgt. X, on detached duty from the 5th Descott'. Day later he replied "I love it!"
When son sent the books back I contacted Drake again, told him about them and that I planned to ,give him the set when he got back, and asked if he'd be willing to sign them, "Send them to me. I'll get Steve to sign them, too." He did, and they were duly presented when son got back.

This is the same president who watched a brilliant and popular professor, Carole Hooven, be effectively hounded out of her position after a public shaming campaign by one of her department’s DEI enforcers, and a mob of teaching fellows, because Hooven dared to state on television that biological sex is binary. This is the president of a university where a grand total of 1.46 percent of faculty call themselves “conservative” and 82 percent call themselves “liberal” or “very liberal.” This is the president of a university which ranked 248th out of 248 colleges this year on free speech (and Penn was the 247th), according to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. Harvard is a place where free expression goes to die.
As the man says, there's only Approved Free Speech for the leftists who follow their rules, everyone else is supposed to shut up. Or be shut up and ruined.

Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, told the Times his office was approving 3,000 firearm permit applications per day, as opposed to around 100 per day before the terrorist attacks.

A couple of things to point to this morning

Let’s dump the curriculum and teach Palestinian propaganda instead, said a group of Oakland (CA) teachers. They proposed an all-day “teach in.” Um, no, said district officials.
One early-elementary lesson proposed for the “teach in” encourages children to identify what they “will chant at a Palestine protest,” reports Jill Tucker in the San Francisco Chronicle. In an alphabet book titled P is for Palestine, the letter “I” represented “intifada,” which refers to armed uprisings by Palestinians against Israeli control of disputed land. (The book says the word means”rising up for what is right!”)
Note this:
“Only one third of students met or exceeded state English standards in Oakland Unified in 2023. One quarter met or exceeded math standards. Enrollment is declining.”
I repeat: fire all of them, and hire teachers.
Head of the climate summit says "I want to end fossil fuels, but “please, help me, show me a roadmap for a phase-out of fossil fuels that will allow for sustainable socio-economic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves.”
And the climatistas melt down. Again.

That's a couple of nice, stupid things the Sheriff came up with
We were told that Sheriff Livingston won’t approve applicants if they attempt to qualify with a handgun that has a laser, red dot sight, or a pistol light attached (night sights are allowed), and found the page at the bottom of this post on the county’s web site. We wrote to ask the Sheriff for his rationale for these restrictions and this week we heard back from him.
The reasons for excluding these accessories are (I summarize here, these aren’t quotes) . . .
1. Permittees could use inferior accessories that aren’t subject to vetting and could hinder the performance of the firearm.
2. Without proper training, the attachments can make a smooth weapon draw difficult, endangering the individual in a deadly force encounter.
3. The attachments make carried handguns harder to conceal.
But wait! There's MORE!
The Contra Costa department also doesn’t allow single-action firearms to be carried, such as the very popular 1911 platform and its smaller variants.
Holy crap.
I'll bet if you say anything about, say, a red dot helping your eyes, he'll disqualify you for inadequate vision.
Damn, what bullshit.

The teacher, a father of 10 children, kept the hostage for almost 50 days, barely provided food, and neglected the hostage's medical needs, Israeli Channel 13's Almog Boker reported Wednesday. A Gazan doctor also held another hostage, according to Boker.

First, good news from Maryland
Plaintiffs seek to enjoin the state from enforcing only this additional, preliminary handgun-licensure requirement. And Plaintiffs’ challenge must succeed. The challenged law restricts the ability of law-abiding adult citizens to possess handguns, and the state has not presented a historical analogue that justifies its restriction; indeed, it has seemingly admitted that it couldn’t find one. Under the Supreme Court’s new burden-shifting test for these claims, Maryland’s law thus fails, and we must enjoin its enforcement. So we reverse the district court’s contrary decision.

Judge Keenan would have us believe the word “infringed” in the Second Amendment is a synonym for “destroyed.” This is a word game Progressives love to play. Change the clear meaning of words to achieve political objectives.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has filed a notice of appeal in a case challenging its rule against pistol braces (FINAL RULE 2021R-08F). Gun Owners of America (GOA) filed a motion for summary judgment a day later.
The case, Texas v. ATF, is a joint effort between GOA, Gun Owners Foundation (GOF), and the state of Texas to take down the ATF’s pistol brace rule.

Since then, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has expanded the injunction to cover everyone in the nation, effectively killing the ATF’s rule. Before that happened, according to GOA, all parties agreed to the timeline in the Texas v. ATF case. Merely one day prior to Texas and GOA submitting a motion for summary judgment, the ATF proceeded to lodge a notice of appeal with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Many think the ATF violated the agreed-upon timeline and is trying to stall for time since the Fifth Circuit appears to be a dead end for a Bureau legal victory.
It is unlikely that the Fifth Circuit of Appeals would overturn Judge Tipton’s decision. The Fifth Circuit is openly hostile to the ATF’s use of the rule-making process.
Every court should be openly hostile to a federal agency saying "We don't need Congress, WE can make law."
