When loading these plated rifle bullets do not exceed a max velocity of 1950 fps.
Considering the velocity of GI ball in that cartridge is about 1950, that would indicate you could load these up to full velocity and not have any problems.

Some of this makes for a damned depressing Saturday morning
Now Obama's off the prompter, when his silver-tongued rhetoric invariably turns to sludge. But he's talking about a dead man here, a guy murdered in public for all the world to see. Furthermore, the deceased's family is standing all around him. And, even for a busy president, it's the work of moments to come up with a sentence that would be respectful, moving and true. Indeed, for Obama, it's the work of seconds, because he has a taxpayer-funded staff sitting around all day with nothing to do but provide him with that sentence.
Instead, he delivered the one above, which in its clumsiness and insipidness is most revealing. First of all, note the passivity: "The loss of Daniel Pearl." He wasn't "lost." He was kidnapped and beheaded. He was murdered on a snuff video. He was specifically targeted, seized as a trophy, a high-value scalp. And the circumstances of his "loss" merit some vigor in the prose. Yet Obama can muster none.
Even if Americans don't get the message, the rest of the world does. This week's pictures of the leaders of Brazil and Turkey clasping hands with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are also monuments to American passivity.

And yet more BS from Marriott
As a bonus, the hotel had hand-outs on its front desk actively encouraging visitors to place themselves in legal jeopardy by asserting the patently false notion that firearms could be checked/stored at the Charlotte Convention Center - a center where possession of firearms, regardless of intent, is a criminal act as verified by Workman. So, following these directions, armed guests would rush up to Center security, announce they had a gun to check, and then be at risk of arrest, imprisonment, and seizure of their firearm.
Very. Naughty. Indeed.
I will leave it to the attorneys in the community to determine with certainty if such action rises to the level of criminal conduct (Bait'n'switch? Fraud?) though my lay suspicions certainly leave me rather curious if those merry boundaries were crossed by Diehl and company.

Many years later, I met another former Marine who had been a senior NCO there. We began to exchange stories of our time in the Corps, as former Marines are prone to do. When the subject of the Middle East arose, he told me a disturbing tale. In a nutshell, Biden, a few weeks before the bombing, had visited the barracks. He had a fit at the defensive posture of the unit, which had prudently set up barricades, automatic weapons emplacements, etc. Per Biden, they were not deployed as appropriate to their "peacekeeping" mission - too warlike, and "sending the wrong message."
He demanded that the fortifications be dismantled. The senior NCO on the scene respectfully reminded the senator that he was not in the chain of command. After throwing a tantrum, Biden and the rest of the congressional fact-finding mission left for home. A few days later, word came down from the Pentagon to comply with Biden's instruction. Evidently, Biden had located a spineless officer at the Pentagon. Also included in the order were some changes to the ROE (Rules of Engagement) that slowed response to any attacks. (Marines were not allowed to keep their weapons loaded) The one Marine, a young lance corporal, who was able to fire on the truck as it headed toward the barracks was only able to do so because he had kept his weapon loaded in spite of the order, after the unit first sergeant had hinted he would turn a blind eye. This is the same young Marine, that suffering from survivor guilt, took his own life shortly after.
For that matter, if this is indeed true, Biden ought to have his ass kicked out of that office, out of DC and into a giant vat of scorpions.

Commanders have reportedly ordered a U.S. military unit in Afghanistan to patrol in a manner that could handicap them.
Some soldiers are being ordered to conduct patrols without a round chambered in their weapons, The US Report has learned from an anonymous source at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. Our source was unsure if the order came from his unit or if it affected other units.
I mean, are these assholes TRYING to get our troops killed?

I finally found some of the new Hornady Critical Defense ammo
at last weekend's gun show and got some .380 to try out. Cycled perfectly through my pistol, somewhat snappy recoil and hit right at point of aim(short range, of course).

I grabbed half-a-dozen pieces, all about four feet long. I have no idea how many different things I made out of them; screwdrivers and awls and punches and chisels and flint strikers and small knives and springs and arrowheads.
Think about that. Very good quality spring steel, and they could afford to just give some to me. Historically, it wasn't that long ago that that trailer load would have been a somewhat precious cargo: probably a ton of high-carbon steel of very consistent quality in a form that could easily be used to make any of a range of things, from blades to different springs for instance.
Aluminum. Once so rare there's some in the British Crown Jewels, now so common we can make drink cans and car body parts and electrical wires out of it.
When you think about what was required- in thinking of, in designing, in engineering the ways to better mine and smelt and refine and roll/extrude/stamp these and other metals on this scale... And they're so common people rarely actually think about them.
By the way: few years back I found some small-diameter stone drills- the kind you hit with a hammer- at a salvage place. You want to talk about chisels... I took one piece about eight inches long, chucked it in the drill and used that to spin it against the sanding disk on the belt sander to turn about two inches into a nice taper, then a point; best prick punch I've ever used.

The Stamford Advocate hit gold from a parade speech in November 2008:
“I wore the uniform in Vietnam and many came back to all kinds of disrespect. Whatever we think of war, we owe the men and women of the armed forces our unconditional support.”
The occasion was the Stamford Veterans Day parade Nov. 9, 2008.
The speaker was Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, as quoted by The Advocate.
A trove of potential bulletin board material was unearthed Tuesday by Hearst Connecticut Newspapers from its archives quoting the once seemingly unflappable U.S. Senate candidate on his military record, one that he has been accused of embellishing.

During a May 18, 2009, military board tribute to veterans in Shelton, Blumenthal was quoted by the Connecticut Post as saying, “When we returned from Vietnam, I remember the taunts, the verbal and even physical abuse we encountered.”
Miserable, lying little bastard. Who's still lying to make 'excuses' for the earlier lies.

And so we return to J.E. Dyer’s essay, where she essentially argues that freedom of speech is simply the vehicle through which we can express our political ideals without fear of reprisal. While that may be true, it leaves out the final piece of the puzzle: Freedom of speech itself is our highest political ideal. We need freedom of speech not merely so we can discuss Aristotle and the Teapot Dome Scandal and non-proliferation treaties, but more importantly we need freedom of speech so we can defend the unconditional right of freedom to speak — or think, or draw, for that matter. As soon as someone comes along as says (as Dyer does) that some forms of speech are “better” or “higher” than others, the implication is that the the low-class expressions are somehow less worthy of defending. But that way lies the road to ruin. We would soon begin to slide down what I call Niemöller’s Slippery Slope, which in this instance would begin, “First they came for the cartoonists….”

It is nothing less than amazing that holy men decrying the desecration of their religion would create such foul images, but there you have it. It is as if the pope created “Piss Christ” and then passed it off as the work of critics of Catholicism.
So, if it really is a sin to depict Mohammed, then these imams will be roasting in hell. (Unless, of course, taqqiya permits Muslims to break their own house rules for the purpose of sticking it to the infidels.)
But, that aside, the clerics' action underlines what's going on: the real provocateurs are the perpetually aggrieved and ever more aggressive Islamic bullies - emboldened by the silence of "moderate Muslims" and the pre-emptive capitulation of western media. I was among a small group of columnists in the Oval Office when President Bush, after running through selected highlights from a long list of Islamic discontents, concluded with an exasperated: "If it's not the Crusades, it's the cartoons." That'd make a great bumper sticker: It encapsulsates both Islam's inability to move on millennium-in millennium-out, plus the grievance-mongers' utter lack of proportion.

In a break from the cleaning up that would be done
if I didn't keep taking breaks, something else made years ago, when I realized I needed some carving chisels
Little closer look at the blades, different widths and bevels
They were all forged from overhead garage door spring, an amazingly useful stuff for a blacksmith. For that matter, from larger spring you could use a torch to heat it, then pound it straight and grind it. Heat-treated properly, holds an edge very well. The handles were turned on Dad's lathe.
In the garage is a set of larger ones forged from auto coil spring. Very handy tools at times; the big ones originally made when I started making knife sheaths out of walnut and maple for some blades.

The New Haven Independent reported that Blumenthal called supporter Storm who helped him out today.
Elliott Storm is a Blumenthal supporter. The campaign called him and asked him to show up; he called up his friends in the “Vet Pack” to join him, friends who, like him, travel around the country talking about ex-soldiers who contend with post traumatic stress syndrome.
Why is this not surprising?
Oh, because Blumenthal is a Democrat who apparently wouldn't know the truth if it bit him on the testicles. Assuming he actually has any.Ok, here's a new set of definitions
