A university president who actually cares about free speech

Well done, sir.
Across our nation it is all too common that opinions expressed that differ from another’s—especially those that are controversial—can spark passion and even outrage, often resulting in calls to suppress that speech.

That simply cannot be allowed to happen. I firmly believe that limiting the range of voices in society erodes our democracy. Universities, moreover, are at the heart of the revolutionary notion of free expression: promoting the free exchange of ideas is part of the core reason for their existence. That open interchange of opinions and beliefs includes all members of the UArts community: faculty, students and staff, in and out of the classroom. We are dedicated to fostering a climate conducive to respectful intellectual debate that empowers and equips our students to meet the challenges they will face in their futures.

I believe this resolve holds even greater importance at an art school. Artists over the centuries have suffered censorship, and even persecution, for the expression of their beliefs through their work. My answer is simple: not now, not at UArts.

When you only have two choices or you think you only have two choices, then you do one thing at the expense of the other.

So for instance, you know we have talked about this before, but it just seems so clear now. When four year degree universities needed a P.R. Campaign 40 years ago, they got one.

But the P.R. Came at the expense of all of the other forms of education. So it wasn’t hey, Tucker get your liberal arts degree because it will give you a broad base of appreciation for humanity. It was come if you don’t go get that degree, you will wind up over here turning a ranch or running a welding torch or doing some kind of consolation prize.

So we promoted the one thing at the expense of all of the others.

And that one thing just happened to be the most expensive thing. And so, look come I don’t think the skills set is the mystery. A reflection of what we value.

While back had a piece about people not being able to get cataract surgery under the NHS.  Lots of other problems as well:

Couple of years back, after they'd announced "It will not be allowed for anyone to sit in an ER for more than two hours(I think it was) without being seen", turned out they had people sitting in ambulances outside for hours, so they wouldn't be 'waiting in the ER' and it wouldn't count on the time.

In England, rationing is established by NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), which determine which procedures have “value.” As an example, “Of the 195 NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in England, 104 now include cataract removal on their list of ‘procedures of limited clinical value,’ according to research by the Medical Technology Group.”
It's not of 'limited value' if you're going blind, but hey, it's not happening to the CCG clowns, so it's limited.  Right?
Many CCGs have determined hernia repair is no longer something patients can automatically have, while dozens have declared knee and hip replacements as also not necessarily possible, the Guardian said.

We injure ourselves while working to pay our taxes, and the government just leaves us to suffer.’ “
They've already got your money, and control of what care you're allowed to get, so what do they care?

A very delayed and short range report

Once upon a time Widener's sent me some ammo, and I told you I'd do some tests.  Due to various things, including me forgetting things*, it's taken a while, but here's the first.

Winchester .45-70  Ballistic Silvertip

This is a 300-grain polymer-tipped bullet, and it's a screamer: muzzle velocity 1880, energy 2354; they roar at both ends of the rifle.

I fired a group of five out of a Pedersoli Sharps a while back; group was definitely 'put meat on the table' for deer or bear at 100 yards, but nothing to write home about.  Which isn't saying bad accuracy for the ammo; I've read a number of people saying that their rifle of that type won't shoot bullets of this weight & length real well.  So for this I had a chance to put a few through a Marlin 1895.  This was at 30 yards on an indoor range, with a caveat: the ventilation system on that lane was causing the target to blow some, so I was having to time my shot with when the damn thing was where it was supposed to be

Under the circumstances, not bad at all.  I saved a few for use at longer distance, hopefully with the same rifle, and when I'm finally able to do that I'll add to this.


*As in I did shoot some handgun ammo(Federal .38 Special target), and I can't find the pictures I took; assuming I can, I'll do a post on that .

Somewhat abbreviated data dump tonight

New York City decided to change a portion of its gun laws related to the transport of firearms just a few months after the Supreme Court decided to review a lawsuit scrutinizing the city’s gun control laws.
"If we change this, and keep it from going to the SC, we can change it back later.  And if it goes to the SC and we lose, it'll affect laws in a lot of other places" is what I imagine is going through minds.  Especially after this:
The state of New York lost in court over its ban on stun guns and tasers last month when a federal judge ruled that the state’s prohibition of the devices by “all citizens for all purposes, even for self-defense in one’s own home, must be declared unconstitutional.” 
That must've caused severe butthurt throughout the city: "Imagine, all those commoners can have those things now!  This is terrible!"

I look forward to far worse butthurt in the future.

Civil rights win in Illinois

A federal court on Thursday cleared the way for an Illinois rape victim to have a gun in her public housing apartment to protect herself from further domestic violence, the latest judicial victory for Second Amendment advocates.

Senior Judge J. Phil Gilbert for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois in Benton, Ill., issued a permanent injunction on the East St. Louis Housing Authority's gun ban, claiming it violated the Second and 14th Amendments letting citizens protect themselves.
The Illinois leftists will be howling in outrage that a commoner can now keep a useful tool for self-defense.

2. No throat erosion was detected.
3. No rifling wear was detected.
4. No gas port distortion was detected.
Saying these bullets caused no more, or less, wear than standard designs would be one thing, but some of the wear in those areas comes from propellant gas, and I'm not sure how a less-wearing bullet would prevent that.

If this crap passes, more people will leave Californicated

Following a national trend – and concerns over the risks of obesity and diabetes – Democratic lawmakers in the state have proposed a tax on the sugary beverages, which include soft drinks, sweetened iced teas, coffees and sports drinks. While details have remained vague on how much these taxes would be, Democratic Assemblyman Richard Bloom has supported a 20-cent-per-ounce tax in previous proposals.
I foresee a blossoming of smuggling of any "How dare you want to drink something we disapprove of!" drinks.

Someone should propose a tax on illegal aliens; that would raise one helluva lot, except the illegals wouldn't pay it and Californicated wouldn't try to make them.  Also, that's probably the ONE tax those idiots wouldn't support.

I put my phone down and continue to look around. I see people talking freely, working on their MacBook’s, ordering food they get in an instant, seeing cars go by outside, and it dawned on me. We live in the most privileged time in the most prosperous nation and we’ve become completely blind to it. Vehicles, food, technology, freedom to associate with whom we choose. These things are so ingrained in our American way of life we don’t give them a second thought. We are so well off here in the United States that our poverty line begins 31 times above the global average. Thirty. One. Times. Virtually no one in the United States is considered poor by global standards. Yet, in a time where we can order a product off Amazon with one click and have it at our doorstep the next day, we are unappreciative, unsatisfied, and ungrateful.

Our unappreciation is evident as the popularity of socialist policies among my generation continues to grow. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently said to Newsweek talking about the millennial generation, “An entire generation, which is now becoming one of the largest electorates in America, came of age and never saw American prosperity.”

Never saw American prosperity. Let that sink in. When I first read that statement, I thought to myself, that was quite literally the most entitled and factually illiterate thing I’ve ever heard in my 26 years on this earth. Now, I’m not attributing Miss Ocasio-Cortez’s words to outright dishonesty. I do think she whole-heartedly believes the words she said to be true. Many young people agree with her, which is entirely misguided. My generation is being indoctrinated by a mainstream narrative to actually believe we have never seen prosperity. I know this first hand, I went to college, let’s just say I didn’t have the popular opinion, but I digress.

It's not just 'transgender ideology': it's leftists using that as another club

From what I've read, you have a few people(it's very few) whose brain chemistry and plumbing are not matched; those people have a real problem that may be properly treated with surgery and such.  You have a larger number that don't have the chemistry problem, but have mental problems and have decided being the other sex would make them happy(or happier); surgery and hormones aren't going to fix them.*  Then you have the asshats who want to announce they're a non-binary non-hetero(fill in the blanks); they're just activist idiots who want to shock people and be transgressive.

Problem is the leftists have pushed this to this point:

Read that again. Let it sink in. Truth is not a defense. Evidence doesn't matter. What matters — it would seem — is whether someone's feelings were hurt. And thus, with a stroke of the pen, the rule of law is replaced with the rule of feelings. But as Whatcott has just learned, and I suspect many more are about to learn, feelings can be far more ruthless and unyielding taskmasters than laws.
That's one hell of a club to use on people.  And a horrible thing to do to the rule of law.  This crap is not going to end well.

My grandfather has picked cotton and he has also had experiences with the Democrat terrorist organization of that time, the Ku Klux Klan. They would regularly visit his home and they would shoot bullets into it. They had an issue with his father, my great-grandfather.
