Earlier this year the California-based firm admitted that the cars' antennae had also scanned for wireless networks, including home wi-fi, which connect millions of personal computers to the internet.
Google registered the location, name and identification code of millions of networks and entered them into a database to help it sell adverts.
The firm - which uses the slogan 'Don't be evil' - was able to record the location of every wireless router and network without alerting households because wi-fi signals are 'visible' to other internet devices, including the cars' antennae.
Google played down the significance of the wi-fi mapping and insisted it had not collected or stored data from personal computers.
It then backtracked and said its software had 'inadvertently' collected fragments of data (remember that phrase)which were being transmitted as the cars criss-crossed Britain.
The cars' antennae skipped networks five times a second, it said, meaning each network was only accessed for one-fifth of a second.
But it has now emerged that entire emails, web pages and passwords were copied and stored during that split-second.
And Google is oh, so upset! that this happened. And it was all an accident, etc. Reason I have a hard time trusting this?
In the past year alone he has:
* Addressed criticisms of Google’s stance on privacy by saying, “If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”
* Claimed people want Google to “tell them what they should be doing next.”
* Said of Google, “We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about.”
* Said this: “One day we had a conversation where we figured we could just try to predict the stock market. And then we decided it was illegal. So we stopped doing that.”
* Suggested name changes to protect adults from the Web’s record of their youthful indiscretions.
* Said this: “What we’re really doing is building an augmented version of humanity, building computers to help humans do the things they don’t do well better.”

And Schmidt’s far from done. Appearing on CNN’s “Parker Spitzer” program last week, he said that people who don’t like Google’s Street View cars taking pictures of their homes and businesses “can just move” afterward to protect their privacy. Ironically, he said this on the very day that Google admitted those cars captured more than just fragments of personal payload data.
Add this to Google sucking up to the PRC and selling out bloggers, and there's no good reason to believe them, or trust them to completely delete the information they 'accidentally' sucked up.
“We want to delete this data as soon as possible, and I would like to apologize again for the fact that we collected it in the first place,” wrote Alan Eustace, a senior vice president of engineering and research.
"We WANT to"... Not "We WILL", but "WANT to". I've been listening to politicians too long to trust that 'WANT' to mean they WILL.

At this point, I wouldn't trust the Los Vegas Police Department
for ANYTHING. About ANYTHING. The latest piece on the Erik Scott probable murder(ok, could be manslaughter) is enough to cause RCOB, and cause people who tend to reflexively trust the police to think hard about changing their minds.
You really have to read the whole thing, there's no way to excerpt it. Though I will borrow two parts, as display of pure, petty bullshit malice on the part of LVPD:
When the Sig finally arrived, the slide was jammed open, intentional damage requiring repair, more money imposed on the Scott family by Las Vegas authorities. All of these items could have been returned directly to Sterner, incurring no expense for the Scott family, but Sterner had to remain, to the authorities, a non-person who had no interest in the home or its contents that she shared with Scott.

News that Juan Williams' contract with NPR was terminated over comments he made about Muslims while appearing on Fox News shines a spotlight on the radio network's evergreen controversy: Its continued affiliation with Fox News. Specifically, NPR's Mara Liasson and her long-running association with Fox News has often raised questions. This might be the proper time for NPR to finally address that thorny issue.
I'm not suggesting Liasson has said anything as offensive as Williams, or that she has that kind of track record while appearing on Fox. I'm just saying that if you look at NPR's code of ethics, there's simply no way Liasson should be making appearances on Fox

Back? Ok, so Williams went on a Fox show and basically said when he sees some muslims on an airplane, acting certain ways, post-9/11 it makes him nervous. For that he was fired(it gets better) for 'not meeting their standards'. 'Standards' of a bunch who had no problem with this, and similar crap. We know exactly why he was fired, he stepped outside the allowed limits of what the NPR assholes consider 'proper' free speech. Disgusting, and their excuses are just as bad.
And THEN, just to make it even more fun, the CEO of NPR came out with this crap as part of her justification:
“Juan Williams should have kept his feelings about Muslims between himself and his psychiatrist or his publicist.”
My first thought when I read this: "Oh, you really paid attention to the Soviets, didn't you? "Obviously someone who says such a thing has mental problems and needs help." So you go out and make that idiot statement; were you planning to report him for the kind of involuntary commitment your Soviet friends used on people who said unapproved things? Or isn't that available to you as yet?
My first thought about the original event- the firing- was "Mr. Williams, you've now been called a bigot etc. for speaking unapproved thoughts; welcome to the damn club, and how do you like it?" From a couple of things I've read he does appreciate the situation, which is nice.
Screw NPR and PBS; get their hand out of the public purse, especially since they've openly shown this kind of bias and desire to squelch free speech.

Before I shut this down for the night, in reference to my previous posts'
comments on law enforcement, Confederate Yankee has some of the latest on the Erik Scott case. I'm going to post part of it, which has both lowered my opinion of LVPD and convinced me that they KNOW the shooting was basically the murder of a man:
The Police have asserted that the Ruger .380 ACP pistol reportedly found in Erik’s pocket by firefighter/medic Chris Thorpe constituted a crime, but the evidence of that “crime,” the pistol itself, was already in the hands of the police if their account of the incident is accurate. It may not be. All available evidence--to say nothing of common sense and constitutionally sound police procedure--indicates that Erik’s home had nothing whatever to do with any crime, nor did any of its contents. It was the home of a man the police shot and killed. That home was under the lawful control of Sterner, his joint tenant. The police knew this. Deputy Public Administrator Grodin knew this. The police had no lawful reason to enter or search Erik’s home or to take any property within. I am aware that I have repeated this point more than once. As Shakespeare said, there is method in my madness.
Experienced investigators listening to the voice of the PA Deputy Grodin on the You Tube recording would hear what I heard: A man running a bluff and running it badly. Unless he was incompetent (or under pressure?), Grodin would surely know the limits of his authority, and would also know, as has been admitted, that being accompanied by the police was unusual. He would have known that he had no authority to enter Erik’s home despite his bluff to the contrary, to say nothing of seizing his property, and would have understood that he could never, absent committing blatant perjury on an affidavit, have obtained a warrant. Realistically, he would likely have had no idea how to find and complete an affidavit to obtain a warrant as this is, in all probability, not a usual requirement of his daily duties.
The police would know how to obtain a warrant. They would know without a doubt that they had no legitimate reason and no lawful authority for a search and that obtaining a warrant would require a perjured affidavit, an original affidavit bearing their false assertions and an officer’s signature that would be on file with the court, difficult or impossible to control. In addition, as previously mentioned, the warrant return would have to specify each item seized which would then have to be entered into the police evidence system. All or any of these documents, if indicative of perjury or any other crime, would point directly at them and could lead to dismissal, prosecution and incarceration.
So why did the police contact the PA’s Office? Why did they enlist their aid? Why were they desperate to enter Erik’s home and seize property despite knowing that Sterner had joint tenancy and that they had no reason to be there and no lawful authority to conduct a search?
Go read all of it, but I warn you it's pretty much more of a RCOB piece. Especially with the next paragraph:

Combination of reasons. I never intended this to be a political blog, but it's turned partly into one. Partly because there's just not enough time to write about all the things that either outrage or delight me. And because, when you get down to it, my primary feeling toward politics tends to be "Would you people just LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE?!?"
I don't LIKE writing about corrupt, vicious little bastards like Barney Frank, and arrogant fools like John Effing Kerry, and very often flat stupid people like Maxine Waters. And when some tool like Trent Lott mouths off about how 'these tea party people will need to be properly controlled by the Party', and Corker starts talking about 'Oh no, we won't really try to get rid of Obamacare!', and some other Stupid Party tool talks about how friendly and helpful the Democrats will be... Sometimes I do scream at the screen. And have thoughts involving ropes with thirteen loops, or just a nice, simple firing squad. I'm effing sick to death of ALL these people who want to run my damn life. And my kids lives, and everyone else's. And if they'd just leave us alone, I'd let them kiss each others' asses and make deals and whatever all day long.
But they won't leave us alone. Some are socialist assholes who demand everyone be controlled by the state- with themselves in charge, of course- 'for our own good', some are just plain greedy powerbrokers who want to be in charge. And all of them want our money and our devotion and our lives. I am heartily fucking sick of them all.
And I flat hate the God-damned crap from various supporters. I've got a friend who can almost excuse almost ANYTHING done by a Evil Party member, but a Stupid Party member says or does almost anything, and it's "You dirty politician! You're crooked!", etc. Which wouldn't bother me as much except for his tending to consider me 'one of his Republican friends', despite my pointing out I've been giving 'R' party bastards harsh words for longer than he has. I'm sick to death of liberals and 'progressives' who think that if you don't agree with them, it means you're actually evil, that you hate, that you somehow want people to die. Preferably in poverty and misery.
And I really, truly deeply hate the fact that I can't trust one damned word that comes out of the major media. Movies, tv, actual(supposed to be) NEWS shows. I wrote once about what really got my attention about the hoplophobes; before that, when I was a kid and heard something on the news, or pushed by some tv show character that I flat KNEW was not true, I just didn't know what to think: "But that's not true, why are they saying it?" Far worse when it was a Professional News Reporter doing it; it took a long time to fully realize that, understand that, these people- supposed to be devoted to reporting news- would metaphorically and literally look you in the face and lie to you; to support their personal views, to help a politician they liked, whatever. And you know what? It still rouses me to actual fury when they do it.
Back when Rush Limbaugh first came on the radio in this area I'd never heard of him(on KTOK, if you're interested). Started listening, and it was incredible; here was a guy with a NATIONAL show actually saying a lot of the things I thought and- far more important- giving me more information than I'd had before. As in lots of parts of stories that I didn't hear anywhere else(pre-internet days for me), filling in holes; I'd have heard a news story about some incident or bill that I knew was leaving something out, or just didn't sound right, and now I got the parts ABC/NBC/CBS had left out, without having to wait a month or two for some magazine article to mention it. Which both enlightened me about a lot of news, and once again rubbed my nose in the fact that these people like Dan Rather and Peter Jennings and such were often flat lying to us, either directly or by omission. A lot of you know firsthand just how that destroys your previous trust in the 'news'; it makes you suspicious of EVERYTHING that comes out of their mouth.
The internet is both blessing and curse in all this: it allows you to dig up information the former gatekeepers don't want you to know, it allows you to cross-check what you hear and read, which is good; it also shoves right in your face the disdain and contempt these people, often referred to as 'elites', have for us. Also educational, and in some ways even more enraging than simply being lied to.
Speaking of which, a few days ago I read about the Democrats plans for a lame-duck session, some of the things they would like to do, including stealing peoples' pension accounts so they can use the money to pay off various unions and increase the government's control over us. And theft it is: seizing private property just because they want to.I have to wonder, what's in their minds? Do they actually believe everyone will yell a while and then quietly accept it? Or do they think that when some people do act that the security forces(EffingBI, Secret Service, etc.) will stomp on anyone who does and cow everyone else? At this point it would not surprise me in the least to find that some of these bastards WANT that to happen, WANT some excuse to order government agents to imprison and kill some people 'to encourage the rest of us' to behave properly. Do you have any idea how far these people have pushed me that I'm willing to believe this of some of them? For that matter, do the various LE agencies understand just how low their star has fallen that people like me believe- know in some cases- that they would simply accept their orders and trot off to carry them out? You've got cops in Maryland shooting people's dogs 'as a threat' even when they have to chase the dog down to kill it; think these sorry excuses for lawmen would hesitate to carry out orders from their political masters? I lost a lot of my confidence in the National Guard when I saw NG troops helping hold people at gunpoint in New Orleans because the mayor and police chief had decreed that the peasants could not be trusted with arms, not to mention the sight of an old lady being beaten by a couple of shits in police uniforms just for having a gun. I grew up around LE people, and it really hurts to have my confidence in them as generally good guys ripped up. Because we don't know when it might be some little bit of knowledge-spreading by someone out there that lights enough of a fire to keep something from going over the edge.
So if I'm not my usual sparkling self this past while, that's a large chunk of why.

Combination of reasons. I never intended this to be a political blog, but it's turned partly into one. Partly because there's just not enough time to write about all the things that either outrage or delight me. And because, when you get down to it, my primary feeling toward politics tends to be "Would you people just LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE?!?"
I don't LIKE writing about corrupt, vicious little bastards like Barney Frank, and arrogant fools like John Effing Kerry, and very often flat stupid people like Maxine Waters. And when some tool like Trent Lott mouths off about how 'these tea party people will need to be properly controlled by the Party', and Corker starts talking about 'Oh no, we won't really try to get rid of Obamacare!', and some other Stupid Party tool talks about how friendly and helpful the Democrats will be... Sometimes I do scream at the screen. And have thoughts involving ropes with thirteen loops, or just a nice, simple firing squad. I'm effing sick to death of ALL these people who want to run my damn life. And my kids lives, and everyone else's. And if they'd just leave us alone, I'd let them kiss each others' asses and make deals and whatever all day long.
But they won't leave us alone. Some are socialist assholes who demand everyone be controlled by the state- with themselves in charge, of course- 'for our own good', some are just plain greedy powerbrokers who want to be in charge. And all of them want our money and our devotion and our lives. I am heartily fucking sick of them all.
And I flat hate the God-damned crap from various supporters. I've got a friend who can almost excuse almost ANYTHING done by a Evil Party member, but a Stupid Party member says or does almost anything, and it's "You dirty politician! You're crooked!", etc. Which wouldn't bother me as much except for his tending to consider me 'one of his Republican friends', despite my pointing out I've been giving 'R' party bastards harsh words for longer than he has. I'm sick to death of liberals and 'progressives' who think that if you don't agree with them, it means you're actually evil, that you hate, that you somehow want people to die. Preferably in poverty and misery.
And I really, truly deeply hate the fact that I can't trust one damned word that comes out of the major media. Movies, tv, actual(supposed to be) NEWS shows. I wrote once about what really got my attention about the hoplophobes; before that, when I was a kid and heard something on the news, or pushed by some tv show character that I flat KNEW was not true, I just didn't know what to think: "But that's not true, why are they saying it?" Far worse when it was a Professional News Reporter doing it; it took a long time to fully realize that, understand that, these people- supposed to be devoted to reporting news- would metaphorically and literally look you in the face and lie to you; to support their personal views, to help a politician they liked, whatever. And you know what? It still rouses me to actual fury when they do it.
Back when Rush Limbaugh first came on the radio in this area I'd never heard of him(on KTOK, if you're interested). Started listening, and it was incredible; here was a guy with a NATIONAL show actually saying a lot of the things I thought and- far more important- giving me more information than I'd had before. As in lots of parts of stories that I didn't hear anywhere else(pre-internet days for me), filling in holes; I'd have heard a news story about some incident or bill that I knew was leaving something out, or just didn't sound right, and now I got the parts ABC/NBC/CBS had left out, without having to wait a month or two for some magazine article to mention it. Which both enlightened me about a lot of news, and once again rubbed my nose in the fact that these people like Dan Rather and Peter Jennings and such were often flat lying to us, either directly or by omission. A lot of you know firsthand just how that destroys your previous trust in the 'news'; it makes you suspicious of EVERYTHING that comes out of their mouth.
The internet is both blessing and curse in all this: it allows you to dig up information the former gatekeepers don't want you to know, it allows you to cross-check what you hear and read, which is good; it also shoves right in your face the disdain and contempt these people, often referred to as 'elites', have for us. Also educational, and in some ways even more enraging than simply being lied to.
Speaking of which, a few days ago I read about the Democrats plans for a lame-duck session, some of the things they would like to do, including stealing peoples' pension accounts so they can use the money to pay off various unions and increase the government's control over us. And theft it is: seizing private property just because they want to.I have to wonder, what's in their minds? Do they actually believe everyone will yell a while and then quietly accept it? Or do they think that when some people do act that the security forces(EffingBI, Secret Service, etc.) will stomp on anyone who does and cow everyone else? At this point it would not surprise me in the least to find that some of these bastards WANT that to happen, WANT some excuse to order government agents to imprison and kill some people 'to encourage the rest of us' to behave properly. Do you have any idea how far these people have pushed me that I'm willing to believe this of some of them? For that matter, do the various LE agencies understand just how low their star has fallen that people like me believe- know in some cases- that they would simply accept their orders and trot off to carry them out? You've got cops in Maryland shooting people's dogs 'as a threat' even when they have to chase the dog down to kill it; think these sorry excuses for lawmen would hesitate to carry out orders from their political masters? I lost a lot of my confidence in the National Guard when I saw NG troops helping hold people at gunpoint in New Orleans because the mayor and police chief had decreed that the peasants could not be trusted with arms, not to mention the sight of an old lady being beaten by a couple of shits in police uniforms just for having a gun. There is no notification the article has been corrected, or that it got anything wrong in the first place, despite the fact that the reporter Ben Evans did in fact blow the quote 100% to suggest an entirely different meaning than the accurate meaning.

One of my first thoughts upon reading this was General Petraeus,
you'd better get off your ass and do something about this. And if you aren't allowed to, maybe you ought to resign so you can properly raise hell about it.
To the U.S. Army soldiers and Marines serving here, some things seem so obviously true that they are beyond debate. Among those perceived truths: Tthe restrictive rules of engagement that they have to fight under have made serving in combat far more dangerous for them, while allowing the Taliban to return to a position of strength.
"If they use rockets to hit the [forward operating base] we can't shoot back because they were within 500 meters of the village. If they shoot at us and drop their weapon in the process we can't shoot back," said Spc. Charles Brooks, 26, a U.S. Army medic with 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, in Zabul province.
Word had come down the morning Brooks spoke to this reporter that watch towers surrounding the base were going to be dismantled because Afghan village elders, some sympathetic to the Taliban, complained they were invading their village privacy. "We have to take down our towers because it offends them and now the Taliban can set up mortars and we can't see them," Brooks added, with disgust.
Some further thoughts, but they're a little garbled to put down right now.

At one of my very first breakfasts, while Berger and Cohen were engaged in a sidebar discussion down at one end of the table and Tenet and Richardson were preoccupied in another, one of the Cabinet members present leaned over to me and said, “Hugh, I know I shouldn’t even be asking you this, but what we really need in order to go in and take out Saddam is a precipitous event — something that would make us look good in the eyes of the world. Could you have one of our U-2s fly low enough — and slow enough — so as to guarantee that Saddam could shoot it down?”
The hair on the back of my neck bristled, my teeth clenched, and my fists tightened. I was so mad I was about to explode. I looked across the table, thinking about the pilot in the U-2 and responded, “Of course we can ...” which prompted a big smile on the official’s face.
“You can?” was the excited reply.
“Why, of course we can,” I countered. “Just as soon as we get your ass qualified to fly it, I will have it flown just as low and slow as you want to go.”
The official reeled back and immediately the smile disappeared. “I knew I should not have asked that....”
“No, you should not have,” I strongly agreed, still shocked at the disrespect and sheer audacity of the question. “Remember, there is one of our great Americans flying that U-2, and you are asking me to intentionally send him or her to their death for an opportunity to kick Saddam. The last time I checked, we don’t operate like that here in America.”
I'll make a modification to that, General: honorable people do not operate like that, but you were not dealing with honorable people.
If you have the stomach to look at the Salon comments, you'll find lots of people explaining how Bush is ultimately to blame for all problems, knew the 9/11 attack was coming and did nothing, etc. But take some antacid and remove the breakables first.

Whilst waiting for dinner to cook,
I had a request for a shot of the new bike:
Honda VFR800; few years old, low miles. Being used, along with a couple of factors I won't go into right now, made it affordable.
Not the style I'd have really looked at, but son checked it out and said "You ought to try it out", so I did. MUCH more upright and comfortable riding position than his sport bike, very nice handling, flat flies when you twist the go-handle. And the factory pipes are very quiet, which was one of the things that took getting used to: you can hear every engine sound*, you can hear the chain hiss. Disc brakes front and back and ABS. The engine is a 'de-tuned version of the 800cc racing engine', and if this is de-tuned the original must be a flat bastard.
It'd be real easy to get in trouble on this thing, as it delivers so smoothly you don't realize quite how fast you're going; it gives you that urge to yell "SCREW THE SPEED LIMIT!" and grab a handful of throttle. About a week after I bought it I took the curve from I40 to I44 northbound about twenty mph faster than every before and it didn't feel like that was pushing it at all, Deity knows what a really good rider could do on it.
So that's the new machine. Found a Givi trunk for it which'll be very handy(on a very BIG sale, or wouldn't have been able to), and need to find some bags later on. Won't be factory, have you ever seen the PRICES they want on those? They're bleepin' fiberglass boxes with a bracket, dammit! So some soft bags I think it'll be. When weather and the job allow, I need to take a trip.

Being used, along with a couple of factors I won't go into right now, made it affordable.Not the style I'd have really looked at, but son checked it out and said "You ought to try it out", so I did. MUCH more upright and comfortable riding position than his sport bike, very nice handling, flat flies when you twist the go-handle. And the factory pipes are very quiet, which was one of the things that took getting used to: you can hear every engine sound*, you can hear the chain hiss. Disc brakes front and back and ABS. The engine is a 'de-tuned version of the 800cc racing engine', and if this is de-tuned the original must be a flat bastard.
It'd be real easy to get in trouble on this thing, as it delivers so smoothly you don't realize quite how fast you're going; it gives you that urge to yell "SCREW THE SPEED LIMIT!" and grab a handful of throttle. About a week after I bought it I took the curve from I40 to I44 northbound about twenty mph faster than every before and it didn't feel like that was pushing it at all, Deity knows what a really good rider could do on it.
So that's the new machine. Found a Givi trunk for it which'll be very handy(on a very BIG sale, or wouldn't have been able to), and need to find some bags later on. Won't be factory, have you ever seen the PRICES they want on those? They're bleepin' fiberglass boxes with a bracket, dammit! So some soft bags I think it'll be. When weather and the job allow, I need to take a trip.

Remember the idiots at VFW supporting politicians who crap on the troops?

It is now evident to most of the VFW leadership, both National and especially the
departments, that the VFW has been subjected to extreme negative publicity throughout
the nation, and the recent endorsement decisions have, in fact, harmed the VFW’ s
reputation and future ability to fulfill our mission.
I cannot let this erosion of public support for our great organization continue. The
apparent lack of the committee to address these concerns will lead to a proposal by me,
as Commander-in-Chief, to amend the by-laws at the 112th National Convention for
the purpose of dissolving the PAC. Meanwhile, under the authority granted to me as
Commander-in-Chief in section 619 of the VFW National By-Laws and under section
620 of the Manual of Procedure, I am withdrawing all PAC appointments effective
October 15, 2010.
Accordingly, I’ m asking the council for a vote of “ no confidence” in the VFW PAC as

Portable fire can Updated
Something Dad showed me a few years back, it's a good and pretty waterproof way to have a small fire without having to gather wood.
Take a tuna can, or something about that size(extra points if you used one of the openers that lets you use the lid). Cleaned out, of course. Cut some strips of cardboard wide enough that a piece inside will let the lid sit in place, and coil them up so you have a can full of cardboard. Then melt some wax and pour it in; let it sit a minute or two so the cardboard can soak it up, then pour out any excess and let cool. When lit the cardboard acts as a wick for burning the wax.
It does take a flame to ignite it, no flint & steel here, but it gives a hot fire in a small area
Besides covering it up for transport, and smothering the fire, you can use the lid to control the size of the burning area
Remember, both the can and the lid will get hot, so for use it needs to be on a much better surface than what I used here(JUST long enough to take the pictures).
Update: A good tip from comments:
I learned to keep it warm and get as much wax as possible in it before allowing it to cool from Gerry. You could use the oven on warm to keep it liquid until the cardboard is saturated.

Due to circumstances that came together just right,
I'm back among the ranks of the (part-time)employed. Which is why bloggage has been light, and will remain somewhat sporadic; that post on the pocket holster took a week to get done, instead of the day or two it would have before.. Good pay, and while I wouldn't do it full-time unless it was that or starve, part-time will do. And- especially this time of year- the money will be very nice.
I will mention that I am once again the owner of a two-wheel powered conveyance, which is very nice. And a new helmet. One was by choice(knocked a hell of a hole in the checking account, one reason for the job), the other necessity; the helmet was actually overdue to be replaced, then about two weeks ago it slipped out of my hand leaving a store and merrily bounced across the pavement. Add age to impact and the hinge not working right anymore, and it's new helmet time. If you're curious, it's a HJC IS-MAX; the modular style with the pivoting chin bar is the only full-face helmet I've found that fits comfortably over my glasses, and this new model has a slide-down sunshield that means I don't have to worry about sunglasses while riding.
On to the news-type stuff, I agree with Uncle on this: did they or did they not break the law? If they did, what's this civil-penalty crap instead of criminal charges? If they didn't, then they've basically been blackmailed into giving a bunch of money to the government so they won't keep saying bad things about them. And I won't get into the "Satisfy the gummint that you're not a criminal before you're allowed to buy something for your sinus or cold problem" bullshit.

The other difference I find in dealing with folks with whom I mostly disagree politically is the concept of need. Why do you need a 50 caliber? Why do you need a car that gets to 60 in under 5 seconds and gets shitty gas mileage? Why do you need this or that? And my response is always the same: What’s need got to do with it?
And this throws them for a loop. Literally. They feel the need to justify their desires, wants, views and goals so that they’re palatable to other people. They expect you to do the same. I have no such predilection toward that. I do things because I want to. And when I explain to them that my supposed need has fuck all to do with anything, I can literally watch their eyes glaze over in what I presume is disbelief. I think it’s hard on them to be told that they don’t have a say. And I’m not justifying any thing to them.
Amen. It's one thing to think to yourself "Ok, do I NEED this, or want this?" and decide what to do; it's a whole 'nother thing to have some jerk tell you you have to justify your decision- to HIM or the gummint- or it's not a valid or 'good' decision.

Pocket holster
So-so photography warning in effect
Lots of us have a small revolver or autoloader for a pocket pistol; one that’ll fit into a pocket when we can’t/don’t want to wear a holster on the belt. If you’ve ever just stuck one in the pocket, you know what a pain that is: it’ll shift all over, wind up butt-down much of the time and wind up with lint in every crevice. So you need a pocket holster.
If you want to make your own, thought I’d lay out how I’ve made mine. In this case I already had one for most pants, but a while back I bought some 5.11 pants from this place Uncle recommended, and the way the front pockets are cut caused the thing to sit cocked, so I’m making a new one.
Please note, with just myself to take pictures there are steps I left out; if you have any question e-mail me or just ask in comments and I'll try to fill in the holes.
First time made one, laid the pistol in question on a piece of paper with the muzzle near the edge, traced it, turned it over(rolled it over, keeping the pistol in contact with the paper) and repeated. Then I traced around that outline and added extra at the sides for the part that stabilizes things, and cut out that pattern. Then fold/fit/adjust/trim around the pistol until had the final(I hoped) pattern. At this point it really helps to have some poster paper or something like it, you can cut the pattern out and staple and tape it enough to hold the piece and try it in the pocket. When you’ve got it finalized, I’d suggest tracing it onto stiff paper to keep, then trace it onto your leather and cut it out.
On the leather: I used 4-6 ounce, something stiff enough to keep shape but not so thick as to make it ungainly. And unless you’re better at patterning than I, I’d suggest cutting the leather just a touch outside the line; you can always trim it down but stretching it is a bitch. One other thing: you’ll notice that the sides are a little different; I do that so the side toward the leg covers more of the pistol to protect it from sweat in hot weather. If you use that design you’ll want to remember to trace the leather so the rough side will be on the outside of the holster, if you do the sides identical you don’t have to worry about layout as you can fold it either way.
Lay the pistol on it and fold the leather over, see if anything you need to trim or adjust now. When it’s all ready, wet down the leather; if you’re making it like mine, the center and the side that’ll be molded in to fit. On this pattern it’s molded on the side toward your leg, so the flat side of the holster is toward the front; I think it prints less that way. If you’re going to just fold it so the sewn part is centered so it’ll fit either pocket, damp both sides equally. Then wrap the pistol in some plastic wrap or a veggie bag or something, wrap the leather around and mold it to fit*. In this shot I’ve got it against a piece of thick, stiff leather and then clamped while it dries a bit; if no clamps available you’ll have to find some way to hold the leather in place against the piece while it dries.
When dry, look things over, and if all’s well use contact cement or something similar to glue the two sides, holds them together for stitching.
Once the glue is done, you can trim/smooth the edges(if you didn't before), and then mark the stitching pattern. Long ago I bought a stitching wheel for marking knife sheaths; it's a spiked wheel that marks a certain number of stitches per inch, you roll it along the stitching line and it gives you a nice line of where to make the holes
No, the butt end didn't come that way, a canine decided to taste-test it . But it still works.
Once marked, I use the drill press to make the holes; set the leather on a piece of scrap wood and used a 1/16" bit. You can use a hand-held drill, just be careful to keep the holes straight. Then I use two needles and suitable thread to saddle-stitch it.
If you're not familiar with that stitch, you cut a piece of thread and put a needle on each end. Push a needle through the first hole, even the thread on both sides, then run the needle through the next hole, then the other needle through the same hole going the other way. Keep doing that all the way around. I usually have to use a small pair of pliers to pull the things through(you can try using larger holes, but don't get them too big). When you reach the hole you started at, keep going for two or three holes, the overlap locks the thread very nicely so you can cut it off flush. Which I haven't done yet in these pictures.

What I do next isn't essential, but I prefer it. I like to stiffen the leather and waterproof it a bit, so I wax it. What I worked out for knife sheaths is half paraffin, half beeswax and a little Lexol or neatsfoot oil. Melt the waxes together over low heat, stir in the Lexol or neatsfoot. What I prefer for something like this is to make a tray of heavy foil, wipe the wax mix over the outside heavily, then put the holster in the tray and in the oven on warm. Leave it long enough for the leather to heat and soak up the wax. If the leather looks dry, you can brush on more wax(I use one of the wool daubers made for leather dye) and back in the oven. When it looks like it's got enough, stick the plastic-wrapped gun in. Push in enough to make sure it's all the way in, do any turning or adjusting you think needed, then let it cool; it'll look something like this
Nice thing is that if you find the leather too pliable for you, just give it another coat and back in the oven, then put the pistol in and let it cool; repeat trips won't hurt the leather, though I'd STRONGLY suggest you not put it in the oven with the pistol in place. This one holds the pistol in the position I prefer in the 5.11 pants pocket. Yes, I now have holsters customized for different pants; I think this makes me a True Gun Geek or something.

*About that molding: most of the time when you make a holster you want it to fit the piece very well, so you mold or 'bone' it: while the leather is damp, now or after the stitching is done(after for the very best fit and appearance) you stick the piece in- in plastic wrap or something- and then work something hard and smooth over it with light to moderate pressure; it'll form the leather to the gun very nicely and keep that fit after the leather dries. The problem with that, for a pocket holster, is it causes the holster to actually hold onto the gun: not a good thing here. You're talking about reaching into the pocket and grabbing the grip and pulling it out of the holster AND your pocket, so a holster that holds onto the pistol is, in my opinion, a Bad Thing. You're not worried about it falling out of the holster, you're just needing the holster to keep it upright and clean(er). First holster like this I made, I boned it the way I usually did, and it was a bitch to draw without pulling the whole damn rig out of the pocket. I wound up heating the holster, wrapping a fake credit card around the slide and then the plastic wrap, and boning it over that to remove the nice fitting from the first try; it drew much more easily after that. So when I say 'mold' in this case, I mean to fit the side of the holster to the outline of the gun only, so it'll hold it upright.

Nice thing is that if you find the leather too pliable for you, just give it another coat and back in the oven, then put the pistol in and let it cool; repeat trips won't hurt the leather, though I'd STRONGLY suggest you not put it in the oven with the pistol in place. *About that molding: most of the time when you make a holster you want it to fit the piece very well, so you mold or 'bone' it: while the leather is damp, now or after the stitching is done(after for the very best fit and appearance) you stick the piece in- in plastic wrap or something- and then work something hard and smooth over it with light to moderate pressure; it'll form the leather to the gun very nicely and keep that fit after the leather dries. The problem with that, for a pocket holster, is it causes the holster to actually hold onto the gun: not a good thing here. You're talking about reaching into the pocket and grabbing the grip and pulling it out of the holster AND your pocket, so a holster that holds onto the pistol is, in my opinion, a Bad Thing. You're not worried about it falling out of the holster, you're just needing the holster to keep it upright and clean(er). First holster like this I made, I boned it the way I usually did, and it was a bitch to draw without pulling the whole damn rig out of the pocket. I wound up heating the holster, wrapping a fake credit card around the slide and then the plastic wrap, and boning it over that to remove the nice fitting from the first try; it drew much more easily after that. So when I say 'mold' in this case, I mean to fit the side of the holster to the outline of the gun only, so it'll hold it upright.

Just a couple of things before I start the morning
A Clark County judge says Wisconsin’s ban on carrying concealed weapons is unconstitutional. In the case, authorities charged a Sauk City man with carrying a concealed weapon, after he admitted he had a knife in his waistband. He never threatened anyone. In light of the landmark Supreme Court ruling in McDonald v. City of Chicago, attorney William Poss filed a motion to dismiss the case on constitutional grounds. Judge Jon Counsell obliged Wednesday, ruling the law is overly broad and violates both the Second and Fourteenth Amendments of the Constitution.
“The government has to have a compelling state interest to do so (restrict the right to carry) and they have to have the least restrictive means of doing that,” said Poss. “Public safety obviously is a state interest, but there’s all kinds of ways to do that in this regard.” In his decision, Counsell states the law forces citizens to “go unarmed (thus not able to act in self defense), violate the law or carry openly,” but notes displaying weapon’s openly isn’t a “realistic alternative.”
Interesting that in this case the weapon involved wasn't a firearm. And I like this from the end of the article:
“There’s a lot of interest in this obviously,” he said. “It’s not a left or right type of thing quite frankly. It’s a liberty thing.”
Damn straight.

Busy the last couple of days, so little free ice cream
as the Geek puts it. But I do have to bring this up; it's directly connected to Tam's "Are they TRYING to turn me...?" post, though in this case it's a bit more "Are they TRYING to get dragged out of those offices and hanged?"
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee heard from hand-picked witnesses advocating the infamous "Guaranteed Retirement Account" (GRA) authored by Theresa Guilarducci.
(You can find the blistering interview with Guilarducci by radio talk show host Mark Levin in 2007 at the link).
In a nutshell, under the GRA system government would seize private 401(k) accounts, setting up an additional 5% mandatory payroll tax to dole out a "fair" pension to everyone using that confiscated money coupled with the mandated contributions. This would, of course, be a sister government ponzi scheme working in tandem with Social Security, the primary purpose being to give big government politicians additional taxpayer funds to raid to pay for their out-of-control spending.
Even if it doesn't take someone's retirement plan, I guaran-damn-tee you that if they decide to seize the account of their parents or grandparents, an awful lot of people will GROW their wookie suit and pick up the blaster. And lengths of rope.
I said it before: these bastards need to have it impressed on them that even if they're not running for office again or have lost the office, there are things other than voting that can be done about- and to- them.

Greece's National Healthcare System was created in the early 1980s, during the tenure of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. Papandreou, an academic, won election under the slogan, Αλλαγή, which is the Greek word for Change.
Change you can hobble after. If they'll bother to help you get- or ALLOW you to get- a tin foot; otherwise it's Change You Can Crutch To.

The lead Mexican investigator hunting for an American man who disappeared after he and his wife were ambushed on Falcon Lake has been beheaded, a Texas lawmaker claimed today.
The severed head of Rolando Armando Flores Villegas was delivered to the Mexican military in a suitcase, Aaron Pena said today.
Flores was leading the Mexican side of the investigation into the disappearance of David Hartley.

Tamaulipas state prosecutor's office spokesman Ruben Rios confirmed that Flores, the head of state investigators in the border city of Ciudad Miguel Aleman, was killed.

Police said they were treating the horrific incident as 'domestic-related' rather than an honour killing.

But police dismissed rumours the death was an "honour killing", saying it was related to a "domestic dispute".

A closer examination shows that there is little evidence that what the chamber does in collecting overseas dues is improper or even unusual, according to both liberal and conservative election-law lawyers and campaign finance documents.
In fact, the controversy over the Chamber of Commerce financing may say more about the Washington spin cycle — where an Internet blog posting can be quickly picked up by like-minded groups and become political fodder for the president himself — than it does about the vagaries of campaign finance.
I had come along with hundreds of others because, on Christmas Day 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a former UCL student, tried to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear and kill the 278 passengers and crew on Northwest Airlines' flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. After such a narrow escape from mass murder, I thought that no one could deny that the universities needed to confront campus sectarianism. I reckoned without the limitless capacity for self-delusion of British academe.
So much for some scientific developments:
Dr. Calvin Rickson, a scientist from Texas A&M University has invented a bra that keeps women's breasts from jiggling, bouncing up and down, and prevents the nipples from pushing through the fabric when cold weather sets in.
At a news conference, after announcing the invention, a large group of men took Dr. Rickson outside and beat the sh*t out of him.
Can you imagine the media 'reporting' if someone had thrown a book a Bush?
Lovely: "If the Republicans win the election, you'll die!"
Well, yeah, taxes DO affect people; why is this a surprise to some?

Remember the big announcement a few days ago

I'll start this morning with an anniversary: the death of that
murdering little psycho and leftist 'hero' Che:

Well, hell, no wonder he's such a great thing to the kind of people who make videos showing people murdered for not going along with the program.
A little something on past history:
A tape recording of the 1970 shooting deaths of four Kent State University students by Ohio National Guardsmen reveals the sound of pistol shots 70 seconds earlier, a newspaper reported Friday citing the work of a forensic audio expert.
The finding lends support to a theory that the guardsmen thought they were being shot at during a campus Vietnam War protest. Witnesses said at the time that an FBI informant monitoring the protest fired warning shots because he felt threatened.
If indeed the case, the FBI picked a real winner, didn't they?
An opinion on why Obama does what he does:
Why indeed. The answer is deceptively simple: Barack Obama, the president of the United States, is a committed, doctrinaire socialist, and because Marxist philosophy is the foundation of socialism and communism, a Marxist. Many Americans are reluctant to accept this idea, despite overwhelming evidence, for two primary reasons: they don’t want to accept that they helped to elect him, and they’re not really sure what socialism and communism are, or what all the fuss about communism was about.

Title IX Revenue Provisions ”Subtitle A: Revenue Offset
"(Sec. 9002) Requires employers to include in the W-2 form of each employee the aggregate cost of applicable employer-sponsored group health coverage that is excludable from the employee's gross income (excluding the value of contributions to flexible spending arrangements)."
Starting in 2011 ”next year ”the W-2 tax form sent by your employer will be increased to show the value of whatever health insurance you are provided. It doesn't matter if you're retired. Your gross income WILL go up by the amount of insurance your employer paid for. So you'll be required to pay taxes on a larger sum of money that you actually received. Take the tax form you just finished for 2009 and see what $15,000.00 or $20,000.00 additional gross income does to your tax debt. That's what you'll pay next year. For many it puts you into a much higher bracket. This is how the government is going to buy insurance for fifteen (15) percent that don't have insurance and it's only part of the tax increases, but it's not really a "tax increase" as such, it a redefinition of your taxable income.
If accurate, this will screw damn near EVERYBODY; lots of people flat do not have enough money to pay this.
For that matter, I wonder how the IRS is thinking about having thousands of people- lots of them old folks- telling them "I can't pay this, and I'm not going to try; so come get me!" ?
Speaking of the Obama agenda and the fallout,
At one point, he warned his crowd of supporters to get out to vote in order to prevent his own embarrassment in November: “Don’t make me look bad, now.” Since he is not up for reelection, apparently the president means that the slaughter of perhaps 50 Democratic congressional representatives and 8-10 senators will reflect poorly upon himself. Of course it will, but he might have instead phrased his dilemma in terms of worry about his supporters’ fates rather than his own, inasmuch as most all voted for his agenda, despite the fact that almost all elements of it polled poorly with the American people.
He could have; problem is, he doesn't give a rat's ass about them, it's all about HIM and what he wants.
Another reason some organizations want to trash the 2nd and some politicians play along: there's money in it. The American Bar Association is not our friend.
Yeah, the greenie 'kill kids who don't go along' video fits right in with the eco-terrorists.
Why, I thought Arizona HATED immigrants- oh, that's right, it's ILLEGAL aliens they have a problem with...
Only three states accepted more refugees on a per capita basis over the past six years. Arizona took nearly twice as many refugees per capita as its liberal neighbor, California, and more than twice as many per capita as New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
“In the degree of welcome and receptivity we see, I would certainly put Arizona at the top,” said Robert Carey, a vice president at the International Rescue Committee, which resettles refugees in a dozen states.
The work contrasts with the state’s renown as the scourge of illegal immigrants, whom critics blame for driving up crime, stealing jobs and burdening hospitals and schools.
“We’re not anti-immigrant — never have been,” said State Senator Russell Pearce, a Republican who is a leading critic of illegal immigration “But we expect people to follow the law.”

Piece on journalism from a new and an old reporter
I have just come across an article that, for me, is the last word on American journalism. It accuses journalists of being lazy, cowardly, and meretricious. And it was written in 1924.
You want criticism?
As Mencken notes, there was — is — only one problem with all this self-seriousness: most journalists are stupid. Not just marginally unintelligent, but, in Mencken’s view, deeply, intractably ignorant — “there are managing editors in the United States, and scores of them, who have never heard of Kant or Johannes Muller and never read the Constitution of the United States; there are city editors who do not know what a symphony is; there are reporters by the thousands who could not pass the entrance examination for a Harvard or Tuskegee, or even Yale.” On more than one occasion — and I’m sure I’m not the only one — I have had to slow down for a journalist interviewing me and explain to them basic concepts about the story they are writing. These people just are not intellectuals. Many don’t even read books.
