on how to handle pain.
B: That dentist should have been preparing his funeral plans.
Sitting on the mantle at my parents house is an odd-looking pair of pliers. Reasons they're odd-looking:
They're about a hundred years old and
They're dentists pliers. For pulling teeth.
They belonged to my great-grandfather the blacksmith. So many people came to him to have teeth pulled that he ordered them from somewhere back East(wouldn't surprise me if it was Sears, Roebuck).
You look at those, and think "Blacksmith, no anesthetic, eeeeeesh.....

You know, my mother underwent a root canal with no anesthesia simply because it was less painful than finding someone to watch her my brother and I on short notice.
I used to think she was nuts, but now that I have sons of my own she obviously made the right choice.
I once pulled out my own tooth, using only slightly rusty pliers and half a bottle of Jack.
It sucked slightly less than the usual dentist bill.
Somewhere in one of my sister's basements is an old trunk full of family artifacts, a gold scale, a muzzleloading Remington Navy caliber revolver, and a black leather case filled with instruments that will make your nuts suck up between your belly button and your nipples just from looking at them. Those old folks must have been tougher than whang leather. Sometimes I fall to my knees and thank God for allowing me to live in a time where Novocain and sodium pentathol have replaced the claw hammer and cheap whiskey as the anesthetics of choice.
Call me chicken if you will, I'll just go out to the coop and perch for the night.
Oh, by the way, Ma told me that the instruments and case did come from either Sears and Roebuck, or Monkey Ward.
