The phone is dead,

mourned, it is.

A Nokia 1600, bought ten years ago.  Still on the original battery, it's been used and dropped and rained on, and never stopped working.  Until 'The network will no longer support it after the first of the year.'

Which led to 'We'll send a new SIM card that'll keep it working until then.'  Except it didn't, it wouldn't register and the system automatically shut the old one down.  Permanently.  Which meant new phone and number(still thinking of who/where I need to notify).

You get used to having one with you.  And since this happened just before a weekend involving travel, it meant not having that safety blanket of "If anything happens I can call for assistance."

Modern living.

I was wondering what happened there. At the risk of saying "they don't build them like they used to," it seems like the newer phones are engineered to only last a couple of years. Probably so they can get you into a new contract, would be my guess.

Why a new number?

I was told that when the network shut-down the old phone, it also made the number unuseable, so new number. Which is a PITA.
