Why does the Post Office bother with tracking numbers? Updated

since half the time they don't bother to update them.  Package shipped two days ago, the tracking still shows 'Information Available Soon' and 'we don't have a status update on this'.

Update:
Delivered.  And the tracking still shows 'Information Available Soon'...

OR when it shows as being in some sorting center, and then disappears forever.

Decades ago I worked for a vendor selling to the postal service. We were told by the customer to never ship their purchase via US Post since the product would go missing.

I recently placed an order with Berry's Manufacturing for their plated bullets. Because of the weight, they shipped in two separate cartons. Both showed an expected delivery date of Tuesday June 28th on my USPS "Informed Delivery" service. Tracking showed both packages in the sorting center at Provo, Utah and nothing more. One was delivered Saturday the 25th and the other (the really heavy one) showed up on Monday the 27th. When I clicked on the tracking right after delivery, both still showed never leaving Provo, but delivery complete at my house on the 25th and 27th and still expected on the 28th. I just looked at the history while composing this comment, and there is no info between Utah and magically showing up at my town P.O. and then my house.

A friend of mine that retired from the USPS tells me that even with all the "automation" there is still a lot that requires humans to do their jobs, which they don't.
