An assault rifle that caused the evacuation of several homes in South
Redondo Beach on Thursday morning belonged to a member of a federal law enforcement agency under the Homeland Security umbrella, according to a
spokesman for the Redondo Beach Police Department.
...
Because police didn’t know if explosives were also in the
unusual carrying case, officers evacuated surrounding residences as a
precaution and called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb
Squad, Freeman said.
The bomb squad ultimately determined that the package was exactly
what it appeared to be once it was opened: a rifle in a case, Jackson
said.
Next time someone starts that "It takes a fully-equipped manufacturing facility to make guns!" stuff, point them to this:
Illicitly ‘homemade’ submachine guns feature very prominently in
firearms seizures by police across South America, Brazil in particular.
These weapons vary in their level of sophistication though a large
number appear to be semi-professionally produced. In a recent study of
over 14,488 firearms seized between 2011 and 2012 in Sao Paulo alone,
48% of submachine guns analyzed were reportedly homemade. Given the
decent quality of many SMG clones, even that high statistic is probably
significantly under reported.
'Only cops are trained well enough-', etc.
“During that search, it appears one officer accidentally fired his weapon, which struck the other officer and ultimately it was a
fatal shot,” said Nelson, the Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
Nelson, the Sheriff’s Department spokesman later attempted to pad the
statement a bit, asserting that the detective that fired the shot might
have shot at a”misidentified target”… which would still be a negligent
discharge by a ten-year veteran. It’s sloppy gun-handling by an officer
that should know better, no matter how you slice it.

Why does the BART perform probation searches? They are a public transport organization, fer chrissakes.

I was wondering about that myself; and it's a real good question.
