Well, isn't this just a wonderful addition to the security theater

mess? Among other things,
One document set reveals that even after TSA employees identified cancer clusters possibly linked to radiation exposure, the agency failed to issue employees dosimeters - safety devices that could assess the level of radiation exposure. Another document indicates that the DHS mischaracterized the findings of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, stating that NIST "affirmed the safety" of full body scanners.
As to the cancer clusters, Phelps has a theory.
As far as the cancer clusters go, based on the dates, it’s unlikely to be the new pornoscanners. It is more likely that they had a malfunctioning luggage scanner, and it’s killing everyone who was near it for more than a few hours. What they have been hiding is that they were warned not to let employees stand around this thing, and avoided giving them the safety equipment that would show if something was malfunctioning and putting them in danger.

Another quote from Mamet; no wonder the lefties are so pissed at him:
Contemporary Liberal sentiment endorses the abrogation or elaboration of law to ensure that no one suffers, but the first and most important task of law in a democracy is not to right individual wrongs, but to ensure that no one suffers because of the state. And the simple, tragic truth is that this may be accomplished not by a Czar or committee, or by reorganization, or by accession to office of the Benevolent or Wise, but only by limiting the State’s power.
That very idea just scares hell out of people like Obama and Clinton and Japete, doesn't it?

Some more thoughts on Richard Stengel and his errors ref the Constitution.

Does have a ring to it: Mayors Against the 5th Amendment:
Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns has formally changed their name to Mayors Against the Fifth Amendment w/ the release of a video calling for the elimination of Due Process.

By the way, the agency that can't actually do things that make sense on airline security have the spare time and money to do this. (thanks to Tam)

Dubious. I looked at the emails in question, and they're anecdote being pushed by the union.

I'll consider taking that more than vaguely seriously once we have actual studies, because "cancer cluster" sets of every warning bell I have related to bullshit. (Remember "power lines cause cancer"?)

None of that explains the "strokes and heart disease" blather they were trying to pin on someone, too - my suspicion is that when someone does a study on that population we'll find jack shit in terms of significant difference from the population at large (controlling for age/sedentary job/etc.)

None of them seem to have been suffering from radiation poisoning, I notice...

Considering how little people in general know about radiation and how completely goonish the TSA are, I'm simply assuming that they're blaming everything on radiation "because radiation".

Entirely possible. Or they know better and consider it a bargaining point for more bennies.
