When I worked with the Inuit in Canada's far north, we always had a dog team with us. The Inuit told me that the dogs' job was to fight the polar bear and slow it down while we were sleeping, we would then come out of our igloos and kill the bear with our rifles. I guess you could call that the "unwritten contract"...the dogs would put life and limb on the line in order to warn us so that we could end the danger (and get a polar bear skin and extra meat for the dogs in the process). Mr Havens FAILED spectacularly in his part of the contract. Good girl, Lady. You're a brave one.
I would think that living in areas where the chances of animals that could eat you live, you should have a dog that is able to do what Lady did. And you should also carry a weapon when outdoors. I live in lower Michigan, near Lake Michigan. My son was living about 40 miles north, in my hometown, and went outside and walked up within 10 yards of a young cougar stalking a wild turkey. He went back inside, got his gun and his wife and they went back outside and the thing was still there! I told him to never do that again. The Michigan DNR still has not recognized the presence of Cougars in areas south of the Macinaw bridge, other than within a very short range. I have corresponded with them, and they said that they cannot until they have positive proof of them, via trail cam, that has date and some way to prove where it was set up. There is a lot of politics that is involved, as well as tourist dollars. They are just now admitting that there are black bears ranging far south, because they have been hit on the roads. We have seen them for quite some time.
