In the past, you could count on being able to pick up some useable rifle brass people had left behind. That's been tapering off a lot; today the only brass cases I found were one berdan-primed 7.62x51, and a few .223. If it was brass, it had been picked up. ALL of it.
On the pistol side, there was some 9mm, .45acp, some other stuff, but not much; the exception was .22 cases.
Whether for reloading or selling, nobody's leaving anything behind anymore.
