Look it over, AR15 type, on the inside of the dust cover it has '300 AAC' printed. And no, he didn't know how to lock the bolt open. Did that, looked it over, ".300 Blackout?"
"Yes." Hands me a magazine with some .223 in it. Part of me freezes up, then "There's the problem, these are .223."
"I was told you could use these in it?"
"NO, you cannot." Discussion follows, including getting a round of .300 and showing him the differences, followed by "If you get one of these to fire it won't hit anything you aim at, but at least no damage. If this was a .223, and you managed to chamber a .300 round in it, it would blow the gun up."
"Oh." Pause. Little more discussion, then off he went to get some suitable ammo, being given a strong warning to "Take all this .223 ammo and put it separate, do NOT let them get mixed together. Ever."
No, I didn't think to ask what idiot told him he could switch between ammo.
Lord, this stuff does surprise you at times.

He was probably told he could switch between 5.56 and .223 and only heard "You can switch between ammos."
At that point, I'd have checked the barrel markings. Not knowing if he bought a AR made from someone's leftover parts.
Future Darwin award. Unfortunately, he'll make the rest of us look stoopid when he gets his award.
I color code my Pmags, black for 5.56 and tan for .300 blackout. Just to make it a bit easier to avoid stupid mistakes.
And that’s why I refuse to ever own anything that shoots.300.
I once accidentally shot a round of 7 mm Mauser in a .30-06. Scared me deeply. No harm to me or my rifle.
That lesson stuck!
I assembled a 5.56 then later did a .300,they are twins (stock/bui's/scope/slings)excepting barrels,needless to say keep em way apart and have dust covers with caliber stated,will only bring out one at a time for shooting and obviously double check me ammo etc.
I'm with 8am Anon, he confused switching between 5.56 and .223 with .300.
I went a bit further - I only load 300 blackout in Stoner aluminum 20 rd mags. 5.56 goes in PMAGs. That allows me to differentiate by sight and feel .
