I will note that daughter was once studying forensics, and became greatly discouraged over time as she found how many of the "We can tell you the Truth!" proclamations were, at best, questionable.
I'm reminded of one of the lawyers who handed the FBI labs ass to them wondering why more people, faced with what his client had been, did not demand the evidence be evaluated by someone other than the FBI. Because it turns out that's a very good thing to do.

Yes...almost ALL "forensic science" is just voodoo science. God only knows how many people have been imprisoned because of the gross incompetence of such "experts".
I've long thought that ballistic matching was inconclusive in the age of mass production and tight tolerances.Barrels are as close to identical as possible and a barrel with unique features should be rejected by quality control.
Here's a thought, take 20 pistols of the same make and model (such as the FBI have in their armoury) and fire a bullet from each into ballistic gelatin then mark each bullet so it can be traced back to the serial number of the gun that fired it. Now give all the guns and bullets to the lab and see how many bullets they can match to the gun that fired it.
