US National Guard troops being sent to the Mexican border will be used to stem the flow of guns and drugs across the frontier and not to enforce US immigration laws, the State Department said Wednesday.
The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 additional troops to border areas but State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, “It’s not about immigration.”
He said the move was “fully consistent with our efforts to do our part to stem, you know, violence, to interdict the flow of dangerous people and dangerous goods — drugs, guns, people.”
Bad enough that this sorry excuse for a President does this, but the Guard troops will not be armed, either. Yeah, that's just fucking great: put them in hazard with no arms. Just the kind of thinking we've come to expect from these assholes. Just effing wonderful.

Unless the troopers will be patting each other down at shift-change, somebody's gonna be packing, at least their personal sidearms, concealed, I'd bet. Ain't getting whacked just because some REMF says "Guns are bad, M'kay?"
Especially when you keep in mind that it's mostly common knowledge along the border, that ANY U.S. service member in uniform will fetch a hefty bounty from the drug lords. Granted, a pistol isn't as good as a rifle for "reaching out and touching someone," but it's better than nothing, which is what the smegheads at the White House want them to have.
Mattexian is right. A cop once told me that academy training was not necessary for security or campus police, but if they wore uniforms they needed to be able to pack heat. That uniform is a target, and putting unarmed uniformed personnel in an area where so much shooting is going on is a recipe for disaster.
Given the history of putting National Guard on the border and giving them ridiculous ROE the headline should read "Obama Sends 1,200 Targets to the Border".
The idea that you can control the flow of drugs across the border and control the associated violence that spills across the border without addressing illegal immigration is like thinking you can bail water out of a sinking boat with a sieve.
