I have no idea how this 'hold it sideways' crap got started, but movies and TV made it big, at least for a while, so someone had this idea.
Who knows, if gang bangers had taken to it, maybe they wouldn't have sprayed shots and hurt so many innocents. Doubtful, but can hope.
