During the Cretaceous period, there were, what appear to be Global, anoxic events in the oceans. The rapidly evolving ammonite fauna allow very good time correllation of deposits around the world.
The Cretaceous period, and especially the end of it, was also a time of intense activity at the mid ocean ridges.
I wonder whether a certain well known meteorite impact triggered a global CO2 release in the oceans?
