I added one thing: ex is a very good cook, and when I mentioned the bread was said to be 'heavy', she suggested adding a tablespoon of gluten to it. So I did. Since this is the first time I've made it, can't compare to before, but doesn't seem heavy to me. Warm with butter, yum.

What beer did you use?
Bottle of dad's home brew. The house now smells very nicely of fresh bread with a light hint of booze.
I'm telling you...try some warm Vienna bread with REAL butter. I'm not supposed to eat it anymore...but once in a great while won't be too bad. At least that's what I'm hoping.
