One of my questions is how long will the barrels last, especially on machine guns? You're talking really high pressures, about 20K psi higher than 5.56 and 7.62, and that's going to wear on things. There are people with a lot more knowledge than I arguing this out, and we'll see what comes of it.
All I can say is I hope this thing works out for the guys on the sharp end.

We are running our lives, our country, and particularly our military with an unlimited budget. The rifle and ammo is ridiculously expensive. Not a good idea.
I've said this other places too.
I'm confused.
The biggest gripe about the 5.56 "poodle shooter" is that the cartridge doesn't pack enough power.
They've been trying to come up with a viable alternative.
So, they come up with an effective (although overcomplicated due to other requirements), more powerful cartridge and everyone is *shocked* that it's heavier and soldiers can carry less of it.
What the heck were they expecting? Something smaller but more powerful?
Physics is a thing people. It can't be suspended through pipe dreams and really, really fervent wishes.
just another boondoggle for some soon to retire general. they will spend billions trying to make the impossible possible, the troops will suffer as always, until another general needs a cushy job to retire to. nothing ever changes.
Couldda gone with something like the .260 Remmie or even the venerable 7mm/08 and done as well if not better. Looks like a typical military case of NIH.
