Does shooting a lock work?

Sometimes.

Dad once said that if you had to do that, the best would be to shoot down at the body of the lock.  But, as they noted, you'd better have something to block the fragments that're going to fly off.

No need to shoot it. Just pick it. Most locks are very easy to pick and you can teach yourself how to do it in a very short period of time.

I thought my lock on my front door might be somewhat difficult but I had it open in 10 seconds.

Padlocks are even easier.

But, as Doc once said, where's the fun in that?

Once upon a time I fiddled with lockpicking a bit, I ought to dig back into that.
