The Fire Department has stopped requiring probationary firefighters to pass a job-related physical-skills test before getting hired — a move
that critics derided as a lowering of standards.
The move by first-year Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, which allows
probies to fail components of the Functional Skills Training test but
still graduate from the Fire Academy, comes amid criticism of the
department’s low hiring rate of women.
"There's not enough women in the NYFD! So we'll lower the standards so we can get a proper number."
Wonder how many people are going to wind up dead or crippled because of this idiocy?
Few years back Seattle City Council was about to require the FD to do the same thing, and got a whole freakin' parade of firefighters telling them how stupid it was. Including the only woman on the force at the time, who informed them that if they dropped the standards, she'd resign: "If something happens to me I want to know that the firefighter by me can get me out, not go yelling for help because they can't do the job." They backed off, at least at the time.
Yeah, Gruber was the architect, right in the middle of the mess. And he did count on lies and hiding information to get it through. And his only regret is he got caught talking about it.
Consider that all those people he was talking to, supposed future leaders, he figured would approve. And they did.

They derided it because that's *exactly* what it is.
I am not unbiased being a retired FF who was on the job when "our" first female was hired. She passed the same test I did so I was OK with it...the slew of females hired AFTER they changed the standards I was not OK with.
Lowering those standards also made it possible to hire males who couldn't pass the previous tests.
They weren't worth a shit either.
Now none of these people were "bad", some are quite nice. But it isn't a nice test - it's a fucking test to see if you can do anything besides look frustrated and helpless when someones life depends on it.
Apologies for the long rant.
Doing away with objective standards in the name of "vibrant diversity" has been going on for at least forty years now.
When they're not letting 86-pound women join the fire department, they're letting convicted violent felons into state universities and police academies--so long as they show up with plenty of melanin, of course. White males are still held to standards.
And we're not going to vote our way out of this.
