I posted about it somewhere, and one of the comments was really golden:
"He could see his target carried a Daisy pellet gun, so he knew this was going to be a dangerous confrontation."

This is a failure, not just of Stine, but of his editor, his publisher, and, if anyone will admit to the position now, his proofreader. Unless Stine self-published, he was not alone in his ignorance, however, his name is attached.
