The family who lives on the property said their 10-year-old son was shot in the back of the knee. Sheriff Wooten later confirmed that the boy, identified by the family as Dakota Corbitt, had been shot by one of the deputies at the scene.
But the situation of how the child was shot remains somewhat unclear.
Sheriff
Wooten said a deputy, who was not named, was on approaching the
property when a dog ran up to him. The deputy fired one shot, missing
the dog and hitting the child. It was not immediately clear if the gun
was accidently fired by the deputy.
This is very much a 'What the hell exactly went on here?' situation. Which means I'm wondering if we'll ever hear exactly what happened. Big dog? Small? Wagging tail or barking? Idiot with finger on trigger, or scared of dogs? Kid was hit in the knee, could be screwed for life from that.

That is absolute genius. Sounds to me like the kid got Glock knee.Better follow finger placement protocol when drawing that weapon

Did you even read the linked article, let alone the blurb? The kid who got shot in the knee was 10 YEARS OLD and nobody but you has said anything about him having any kind of firearm with which to shoot himself.
Now, as for cops shooting dogs on sight -
No, I can't say that here. Firehand would ban me for the language I'd use.
stay safe.
Something I found notable is that after the cop missed the dog (and hit the kid), the dog did not go on to bite the cop. So the dog was never a serious threat.
EC: Of course not. Meter readers and mailmen don't need guns to deal with dogs. In 99% of the cop-shoots-dog cases, the _best_ excuse for the cop is that he's a coward who does not not belong on the force. The other explanation is that he just likes shooting dogs because he's a sociopath, and firing him should be only the first step.
