Statists just love to manufacture crises to then exploit.
'twas you who introduced me to H L Mencken's;
"The art of Practical politics consists of keeping the electorate in a constant state of alarm and hence clamorous to be lead to safety. This is achieved by an endless string of hobgoblins, all of them imagined."
One of these days, Robert Higgs' book "Crisis and the leviathan" will get to the top of my to read list.
Higgs has done the most complete application of the "precautionary principle" to statism, that I've come accross.
