Turn the jar upside down, and strike the lid flat against a hard countertop, as hard as you dare without breaking the jar (I've never had that happen.) The lid must hit flat, not at an angle or on the side.
One or two blows is almost always sufficient, even for a badly encrusted lid.
I am not all that strong, but I can't remember having to use any tool to open a jar since learning this trick.
(Here recently, I have started to use a piece of rubberized net shelf liner simply to improve my grip, but of course this provides no additional leverage.)
