Either they're incompetents who didn't bother to actually investigate before shoving a story out,
or
They're a bunch of corrupt asshats who didn't care if it was true, because it fit their Preferred Narrative™.
Next will be some more journalists whining about "People think we're liars who work for political purposes!". Again.
