Armor is getting better

Researchers have demonstrated that vehicle armor using composite metal foam (CMF) can stop ball and armor-piercing .50 caliber rounds as well as conventional steel armor, even though it weighs less than half as much.

If you look carefully at that demo, you will see that the foamed stuff is faced by a ceramic armor plate. Which means that what the new material is doing is acting to help alleviate the deformation of the backing material.
