Why didn't San Jose police actually do anything

while people were being assaulted?  And their cars were damaged, and general rioting was going on?
Well, the mayor blamed the Trump supporters for the problem, and the police were standing around either because the brass wanted the mayor happy, or because they were incompetent:
… officers were confronted by some protestors who became violent, aggressive and began to throw objects in their direction. A majority of the violence occurred at the conclusion of the event. While several physical assaults did occur, the police personnel on scene had the difficult task of weighing the need to immediately apprehend the suspect(s) against the possibility that police action involving the use of physical force under the circumstances would further insight [sic] the crowd and produce more violent behavior.
Etc. ad Bullshit.

And now both are playing damage control(seems having it pointed out that the mayor blamed the victims, and the PD didn't do it's damned job while people were being beaten, etc., caused them to realize this didn't look good), issuing statements and "If you have video, loan it to us so we can find the criminals."  Yeah, I'm sure you're just going to run yourselves ragged trying to find them.

Perhaps we need a concealed carry version of the patriot guard riders: legally armed US citizens who volunteer to provide armed escort for attendees between the gun free zone of the rally and the attendee’s parking locations. Wouldn’t be possible in some locations, but based on the noted crime reduction around the NRA convention, the mere suggestion might make these goons think twice.

I like your idea, Differ, but it won't fly. Many of the places where the shithead patrols roam free often have draconian concealed-carry laws, if they have them at all. And they don't recognize other states' permits in most cases.

That being said, if the authorities continue to give a response of 'durrr...' to such behavior, I expect people to start pushing back, legal or not.

Upon which the offenders, playing the "We are dealing with bandit attacks!" game of the Norks, will blame everything on the people they attacked. Which most of the media will happily agree with. And downhill from there.

THe Chief Cop is a LaRaza supporter.

And COncealed carry will end up being turned against us when some violent protester gets aired out.

Better to use a line of people with axe handles. Pound some lups on their melons...

"Nothing like a good piece of Hickory" and all that.
