The lottery

and why I don't participate

Since I gave up on religion and no longer have faith, I spend $4 per week on the lottery and have hope for four of those days. I think that hope is a reasonable substitute for faith.

And I view the lottery as a voluntary wealth-sharing tax for poor folks. We pool our money in the lottery and hope that one of us - - if not ourselves - - manages to win it.

Oh, hell, when the lottery gets over $50 million, I'll drop $1 on a billion-to-one chance. It's a dollar. I can spare it. And somebody's going to win.
