Tam noted some of the more recent idiocy from (formerly Great)Britain,

in which a lady had to go to jail because the cops found her father's old sidearm in the house. No ammo, no criminal action other than being a peasant with a pistol and a judge with crap instead of a brain. And cops with, apparently, no real crime to worry about.

It was a 5 year sentence, so it would be properly described (in American English) as prison, not jail. British English doesn't make that distinction yet; heck, they've barely got over spelling it "gaol".
