Sort-of official number of firearms in the US,
which I think are low. Possibly quite low, especially when you consider how many antique firearms are still around and working, and the people who wouldn't answer questions about what/how many they own.
Low indeed. I will volunteer one antique example I am aware of. U.S. Model 1917 rifle in nearly new condition. Original barrel is dated May of 1918. Front handguard has a bit of red paint left over from its time serving in Britain during WWII.
I bet you're right. I'm 100% sure that my parents' gun collection isn't registered anywhere, and it leans predominantly towards rifles. Back in the 1980's there was a pistol under every mattress, and every recliner, and a long gun behind every door in the house. There were even pistols in the bathroom drawers, inside a ziplock bag along with a cheesecloth bag of rice. Oh, and a pistol under the seats in the truck and a possibly legal break-down 20ga resting across the transmission hump in front of the bench seat in the car.
I would add easily at this point in time a million 'ghosts" to the list.
