This is a pecan year

Which means no squirrels around.  I've never had a problem with them trying to get into the attic, but the little bastards start eating the pecans still green on the tree, and I'd not get any.  Then, after about two years of that, I found a couple of big splashes of feathers in the back yard.  "Ah, a hawk has found the  neighborhood" think's I.

And the squirrels disappeared.  Eaten or spooked off, I don't know which, but no squirrels seen, and I got pecans.

That hawk I saw a lot, either sitting on a power pole out back, or sometimes on the carport next door.  Then he disappeared, and next spring squirrels were back.  And for two years no pecans.*

This year, couple of months ago found a couple of feather splashes out back, and no squirrels to be seen.  And  now I'm picking up pecans.  There will be pie and other things with my own pecans this year.

  1. We had a shit-ton of doves....until we didn't. Yep, hawks.

Can you build a hawk-friendly nest and make the raptor a permanent resident? I had a nesting pair on my roof in the spring but the crows and magpies ganged up on them and drove them away. Must get me that air rifle I've been drooling over...

Ya need to entice the hawks to reside year round, maybe a mouse breeding farm somewhere in the back yard?

We feed a few feral cats, and don't have a squirrel problem. Why do we do it? Because our neighbor has a mass Pecan Tree hanging over our fence line. And we still collect enough pecans to make about 6 or 7 deep dish pies for the holidays.

  5. I think it's a matter of "We'll live here till we thin things out, then move somewhere else for a year or two."

  6. This tree isn't huge, but when it produces, it makes a load of them.
There's an old couple, the last several years, has shown up late in the season to ask if they could gather some of what's left. They're careful of the tree, and I've had plenty, so they get a bunch.
