I have discovered Trader Joe's

They opened one here not long ago, and a couple of weeks back daughter took me there after dinner(it was nearby).  Much better prices on most things than I'd expected, some very good cheese, and- a nice surprise- some very good chocolate bars.

As in 17.something-ounce bars of either milk, dark, or 70% cacao bars, some with nuts, some plain, for five bucks.  Those made some people very happy for Christmas.

Welcome to the wonderful misery that is Trader Joes. I can't escape for less than a bill, even when I went in for just a tub of creme fraiche and the dark chocolate peanut butter cups SOOOO GOOD.

I left Oklahoma a long time ago, so I don't know the liquor laws, but the Trader Joe's in KCMO sells a $10 bottle of saké that I think is easily as good as saké costing $20-$25. I stock up whenever I'm in the area.

  4. Just to be clear, you're talking a one+ pound bar of dark chocolate for $5?

  7. Trader Joe's was founded by a man who believed money could be made selling good foods to people who were "over-educated and underpaid." As I fit both qualifications, I enjoy the place and also regard it as dangerous to the wallet.

As a side comment, it could be worse, Whole Foods sells some of the same stuff, e.g, the same cheeses for $3 more per pound, and four ounce chocolate bars for $8.00

  8. They opened a Whole Foods here a couple of years ago, and for some reason made it about half the size of all the other stores. And the prices... there's a reason I heard it referred to as Whole Paycheck
