Michigan recently repealed its motorcycle helmet law, causing all sorts of speculation about taxpayers having to pay huge medical bills for cracked craniums. So every on-line news story about a death or serious injury in a motorcycle accident draws commenters asking if he was wearing a helmet, and requesting the reporters to start acting like reporters rather than stenographers for police press releases and _ask_ that question. So they finally got ahead of the cycle and put whether the victim wore a helmet in the story to begin with - just when they get a case where it obviously doesn't matter what the guy wore...
I also take the information that he was helmetless as likely indicating a lack of care for safety in other matters - which may have something to do with how he got a cop chasing him, ran from the cop, rode poorly, and wound up cut in half. I'd be more interested in his blood alcohol level, which could explain a lot, but that wasn't immediately available.

Wouldn't surprise me to later find out that famous bit that 'Alcohol may have been involved.'
