We may condemn it now but the alternative was to kill the bad guys you captured. Tell someone that the origin of slavery was compassion for the conquered. <br />I doubt there any but a few works of man prior to second millennium not built by slaves of some variety. The rise of christianity seems to have put a bit of a damper on slavery in fact, something you might expect from a religion that spread through the slave-pens of the Roman empire.<br />Those who do not know this know nothing of either slavery or christianity.
