tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8515829.post8411878429386891594..comments2024-03-29T00:38:38.893-07:00Comments on Irons in the Fire: Yeah, it's been pointed out before: the bad guys are acting like conquerors Firehandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04562365951182027709noreply@blogger.comBlogger1125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8515829.post-75793971438142329702016-01-29T09:23:19.402-08:002016-01-29T09:23:19.402-08:00Let's see... something that's already ille...<i>Let's see... something that's already illegal under federal law is considered a 'major concession'</i><br /><br />My problem with it isn't that the "concession" is so major, it's that the Virginia Republicans have no set a precedent that they'll negotiate with terrorists.<br /><br />What will McAuliff take hostage next time when he wants to trade it off for a "concession?"<br /><br />Also...I think the big reason he "capitulated" is because for the past several years we've been trying to pass a universal reciprocity law like Indiana's wherein Virginia automatically recognizes concealed carry permits from every other state.<br /><br />The reason it's failed is because opponents could credibly argue that Virginia's reciprocity was fairly liberal in application and the change wouldn't make all that much different.<br /><br />McAuliff and Herring's action changed all that and we had a VERY good chance of getting that law passed this year with a veto-proof majority.<br /><br />McAuliff saw the writing on the wall and realized that if he stuck to his guns (so to speak) he'd end up with a worse situation than before he acted...so he "capitulated", probably hoping that the old arguments would snap back into place and the measure would fail again.<br /><br />I think it will pass this year, but he'll veto it and after his capitulation, we won't be able to overcome the veto.<br /><br />We'll see. Someday we'll have a Republican governor again (if the party ever runs someone we can vote for) and we'll get a bunch of this stuff that's on our wish list done.Sailorcurthttp://sailorcurt.comnoreply@blogger.com
