More than 800,000 - or one in five - of all crimes reported to the police each year are not being recorded by officers, a report suggests.
Gee, I wonder why that might be...
The problem is greatest for victims of violent crime, with a third going unrecorded. Of sexual offences, 26% are not recorded.
Then there's this:
Violent crime in England and Wales has risen by 24%, including a 9% rise in knife crime and a 7% rise in gun crime in the 12 months to June, according to police recorded crime figures.
The number of murders in England and Wales also jumped 20% to 681, a rise of 144 – the highest level for more than five years. The murder rate includes the 96 killed at Hillsborough in 1989 following the conclusion of the official inquests.
Police figures also show that the number of reported rapes and other sexual offences rose by 14%, reflecting a slowing of the recent increase in reporting rates for these types of crime.
Makes you wonder just what the real numbers are, doesn't it?

Another point about UK crime statistics: Homicides are not counted as "murders unless" and until there's a conviction. So under UK rules, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman (for example) were not murdered, and their deaths would not be included in any "murder rate" numbers.
If Chicago (for example) used that system, because of the dismal clearance rate (around 20%), the murder rate would be 80% lower! Problem solved!
(I'm not dumping on Chicago PD. About half their detective slots are unfilled, and the "snitches get stitches" culture in the murder neighborhoods is unbelievable.)
One thing driving that "snitches get stitches" culture in Chicago is a PD that allegedly is indistinguishable from an armed gang.
