Repeat bogus '1 in 5 will be assaulted' number,

and then Ultimately, though, from where I sit in Charlottesville, to let fact checking define the narrative would be a huge mistake.

Followed by  “I’m worried that because of the inconsistencies in this story, this will challenge the precedent of believing a survivor,”
Translation: "We need to push 'Accused equals Guilty', because."

Yeah, the dean trashed a whole bunch of people based on an accusation, there were death threats and vandalism, the story was bullshit, but 'We HAVE to believe every accusation is true.'

Bullshit.

The story was too useful to possibly damage by actually verifying it, so they didn't want to: "BELIEVE, or you hate women.  BELIEVE, or you're an apologist for rape culture!"  Etc.  And now that it's fallen apart, "We must continue to believe, or women suffer!  And the falsely accused and harmed?  Sucks for you, but you don't count."

What jumped out at me was the stat that 9% of rape claims are false. That's an astounding number. We know the 1-in-5 is a lie, but the 9% (because of the source and that it can actually be measured without guessing) is a TRUE epidemic.

If 1 in 10 alleged rape victims is flat out lying, then THAT is the rape culture that needs to be changed, and you start changing it by prosecuting women who file false reports.
