Life called, thus leading to no previous bloggage today

Good family stuff.  So to make up for the earlier silence,
So ThinkProgress is indeed full of shit, and Obamacare is indeed the disaster we've foreseen.

What do you think: sincere apology, or sorry bitch who caught more heat than expected?

Abdominal tourniquet; this is interesting.  Very.

A grease gun I wouldn't mind having

A man is going after the cops about one of those 'voluntary' "Give us some body fluids" stops.  Good.

"Law?  The law is what I say it is."
The only proper responses to this include bad language and references to tar and feathers.

No, NOBODY thought the dictatorial edicts were over;

the commies are looking forward to the next string of disasters, and everyone else is saying "Well, New York, you wanted it, so bend over."

MSNBC is all upset about 'snow-trolling';
Also, thanks to Michael Williamson on bookface, everything caused by AGW
Short version of list: EVERYTHING.

Class-action lawsuit against Obama over the NSA lawbreaking; this could get interesting.

Speaking of that miserable bastard President Lightbringer:
A rejuvenated al-Qaeda-affiliated force asserted control over the western Iraqi city of Fallujah on Friday, raising its flag over government buildings and declaring an Islamic state in one of the most crucial areas that U.S. troops fought to pacify before withdrawing from Iraq two years ago.
'Smart diplomacy'.  Or something.

About that turkey breast

and chicken brine, to get a bit more specific:
Bring about three cups of water to a boil.
Dump in 1/2 cup kosher salt, about a tablespoon of peppercorns, about a tablespoon dried rosemary, and that small seeded habanero.
Stir long enough to make sure the salt is dissolved, then take off the heat.
You can let it sit aside to cool, or can speed it up by dumping some ice in.
Once cold, put the turkey breast/chicken in, then add enough water to just cover, then stick it in the refrigerator for six or seven hours.

Put a rack in the roasting pan to keep it off the bottom, put the bird on.  Add some water(I used a couple of cups), put the lid on and put it in the 300-325 oven.

When a thermometer stuck next to the breastbone says about 170F, leave the cover off for a few minutes to brown it a bit.  That's it.

Ah, isn't it too bad our ancestors weren't as smart

as we are?

LOOK AT THAT.  Pure mechanical, gears and levers and cranks, and what all it did; 'friggin'  amazing' doesn't even begin to cover it.

How's that multi-culture thing working out?

Not real well:
Two Pakistani students married mentally handicapped British women so they could stay in the UK with one being deported but the other now claiming he has a human right to family life with his young son, High Court judges have heard.

Lessons that keep being re-learned.  Because idiots.
It’s a somewhat similar situation with battlefield first aid. It’s difficult to provide many troops with realistic training, especially since it’s harder to train on pigs or goats with the animal welfare zealots constantly trying to sue you into training methods that will get more troops killed in combat

"Just because our ship got stuck in the ice and three icebreakers couldn't get us out doesn't mean the ice isn't melting!"

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Suck it, Boston PD!
How does it feel to be treated the same way the commoners have been treated so long?

But the plan needs the mayor's sign-off, and a number of critics had spoken out against the idea, questioning whether giving officers such rifles would increase the chances of innocent people getting shot.

"I don't believe arming them with assault weapons is going to make them any safer," City Councilor Charles Yancey said, according to MyFoxBoston.com.

Damn, this looks interesting: a new 9mm from Remington.

Yes, it is textbook true that the First Amendment applies only against the government — indeed, only against the federal government as originally understood. The constitutional free-speech guarantee is literally irrelevant against private actors, including bullies like GLAAD, the gay-rights agitators who intimidated A&E into suspending Phil Robertson from a show about his family — which, I suppose, is the absurd reality when you’re producing a “reality” program (Duck Dynasty) about a family business.

But as long as we’re talking about reality, what if the “private” actors are really the deadly point of a coercive government’s spear? Mrs. Clinton proclaimed that the Obama administration would unleash “old-fashioned techniques of peer pressure and shaming” to squelch speech it disapproved of. We call these “techniques” extortion and intimidation when they are used by mafia families and other like-minded racketeering enterprises.

When lead a couple of thousand years old

is better.

That is something I'd never heard of before.

Why you're not seen as Officer Friendly anymore(Reason # 184):
So, along with disregarding that Constitution they swore to uphold, the Border Patrol is now another anal-rape gang whose colors include a badge.

Street robberies

Long piece at Arf.com.  One of the important bits(language warning):
When to draw

Despite warnings I often see on the Net I have yet to encounter an instance in which a hold up man called the police to report his intended victim threatened to shoot him. Thugs do not want to come into contact with the police. They may already be wanted or realize chances are good they have been identified in a recent robbery. Or what ever. They are not going to call the police if you draw on them.

Supposed two guys are approaching you in a parking lot and do the classic fan out maneuver. You indicate you have a weapon by clearing your gun hand and fanning your jacket at them. They are not discouraged. DRAW!

I am not saying you should pull your gun out, assume a Weaver stance, and scream "That's close enough motherfuckers!" What I am saying is draw your gun and hold it beside your leg as you start to move to cover. I am very fond of telephone poles. Anything will do though. They will see this. They will remember they have to be somewhere else. They will not call the police.

Then you can just put your gun back in the holster and go back to whatever you were doing like nothing happened. Why? Because nothing did happen. A happening is when shots are fired.

Do not hesitate to draw. If you are somewhere you are supposed to be and someone appears who is not supposed to be there like a closed business show him the end of your gun. Could it be Mother Teresa looking for her lost cat behind your closed business? No it is some motherfucker up to no good. He won't call the police to report he was prowling a location when a guy ran him off.

There's been a thing running 'round the last couple of years about "Always call the cops, because they might call first and say you threatened them."  He says the opposite.  What think you?

One other thing: another part of his advice is When you lock eyes with G the very first thing you need to do it indicate you have a weapon. It doesn't matter if you do or not. If you are a woman put your gun hand in your purse and keep it there. If you are a man fan your shirt or coat tail with your gun hand. Make it clear to dude you are mentally prepared to draw and making sure your gun is clear. This will many times result in an about face by dude. It is the single best robbery avoidance tactic IMHO.
One of the things we hear a lot about is 'brandishing'; generally boils down to 'keep it hidden until you have to draw it'.  Here again his advice is the opposite: make SURE the bad guy knows you're armed.  Some places that would get you in trouble but only if the bad guys call the cops on you.  Again, thoughts?

Last, along with other very valuable things, Xavier wrote of a robbery attempt on he and his daughter on a Sunday morning in a parking lot.  Here's his follow-up, which includes this:
I do not consider my actions that day to be brandishing.

My actions that day were the preparation for defending my life and my child's life.

Perhaps BW chose a word that was tangently applicable, but I understand his thoughts.

From the American Heritage Dictionary: bran·dish
1. To wave or flourish (a weapon, for example) menacingly.

2. To display ostentatiously.

There was no wave, no flourish, and no ostentatiousness in my actions. I was not attempting to impress anybody. I was preparing to preserve my life and limb, and that of my child. Brandishing is an empty threat. The unholstering of my gun that day was a commitment to life and limb. I'm glad the other two men were also committed to their own life and limb, and made the choices they did quickly
.

Seems like a good place to throw in this link: Pre-attack indicators and situational awareness

So in the People's Republic of Maryland, 'energy policy' means

this kind of idiocy and corruption.
While myriad factors affect the price of energy, the governor’s radical environmental policies have undoubtedly contributed to its escalating expense. By 2020, O’Malley wants 18 percent of the state’s energy to be supplied from green sources, even though natural gas is at least 37 percent cheaper an energy source than onshore wind, and solar energy is at least 98 percent more expensive than conventional coal. Working toward this goal, the governor has backed several green policies, despite their impact on electricity prices.

An offshore-wind project that the Maryland legislature supported earlier this year would be among the most expensive to date. Taxpayers would fund the project, coughing up $1.73 billion in direct subsidies over the next two decades. Then they’d be forced to buy whatever wind energy the project manages to produce, at a premium; offshore wind is by far the most expensive energy source, costing at least two and a half times as much as coal or natural gas. The legislation’s fiscal and policy note estimated that offshore wind would add $1.04 billion to utility bills over the next 20 years.

And all the big contributors are being paid off:
That feeds nicely into other state programs, such as EmPOWER Maryland, which seeks to cut per capita electrical consumption by 15 percent by 2015. It allows utility companies to add an “implementation surcharge” to electricity bills. The law also accommodates utility companies at the expense of the consumer, ensuring that they don’t lose profits when energy use decreases. A “decoupling” policy divorces profits from sales. Practically, this creates a baseline guaranteed profit for utilities, and it often forces consumers to pay for electricity even if they didn’t use it.

Want to bet the people in favor of this all whine and bitch about 'crony capitalism'?

So: in the name of 'clean' energy,
Screw people by forcing them to pay subsidies,
Screw people with more-expensive energy,
FORCE them to buy the more-expensive energy,
Use their money to pay off your friends,
and lecture the commoners the whole time about how it's To Save The Earth.  So Shut Up And Pay Up, Peasant.

Attention Ann Shoben: saying "Nobody wants to ban your guns" and then

saying 'Except for those' doesn't exactly go over well.
Poll s showed that even the majority of gun owners and NRA members were in favor of such measures as universal background checks and the banning of some military style assault weapons.
Nope.  You keep saying that, but not true.  And then
Then, while most of us were still reeling with shock, the NRA went into high gear. Wayne LaPierre was all over the airways sounding like a cross between Elmer Gantry and an Old Testament prophet warning of Armageddon. His message: The government was coming to confiscate our guns and deprive us once and for all of our Second Amendment rights.
You just said people were in favor of banning some guns, but he's a horrible bastard for saying  it?  Really?

After weeks of this, and despite President Obama’s assurances that the government did not want our guns and had no intention of messing with our right to own them,...
Really?  You can't have it both ways: you can't call for bans and restrictions and then call people idiots for believing you want to ban some guns and restrict the rest.

And I do have to point out, claiming gun owners are allied with skinheads, etc., doesn't exactly give us any reason to think we've got common ground with you.  On anything.

And the first New Years present from AG Holder & Co.: More dead bodies

A U.S. official said Tuesday that investigators have traced at least one firearm recovered at a December 18 gunfight in Puerto Peñasco, across from the Arizona border, to Operation Fast and Furious.

That's the disastrous operation run by agents in the Phoenix office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

But don't worry, because they're very sorry about it:
The ATF, in a statement, said: "ATF has accepted responsibility for the mistakes made in the Fast and Furious investigation and at the attorney general's direction we have taken appropriate and decisive action to ensure that these errors will not be repeated. And we acknowledge that, regrettably, firearms related to the Fast and Furious investigation will likely continue to be recovered at future crime scenes."
I'm sure that'll be very comforting to the dead and their relatives.  Especially the innocents murdered.

And I'm sure they'll be happy knowing none of the dedicated public servants responsible for this have actually faced any nasty punishment for what they've done.

And a data dump for the end of the year

A failure of the victim selection process

An off-duty Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a man suspected of trying to rob the trooper at his home Friday, Oklahoma City Police said.

Well, dumbass won't try that again.

I should note that for turkey and chicken,

all you need for brine is water, kosher salt, rosemary, peppercorns and a small seeded habanero.  And about 6-8 hours is plenty for the whole chicken or turkey breast.

And I didn't screw up the gravy this time.

No, I am not going out to play

'dodge the drunker-cars'.  I'm going to stay in and, if I'm still awake at midnight, have a taste.

In the meantime, Starbucks should've known better.

Toys for Totalitarians; sure to annoy some of the right people.

"Leave Chelsea Clinton alone! But you can

crap on Bush' daughters all you want.

Don't talk about Al Gores' kid!  But you can make shitty jokes about Sarah Palins' kids.

Not a word about Obama's daughters!  But you can make jokes about Romney's grandkid.  And that Robertson kid that's mixed-race, well HE'S an open target!"
Ah, the caring, loving attitudes of the left...

Tab clearing

before I lost track of all this:
Janet Vrotsos, you suck.
468 vrotos union leader hates veterans

"What?  Show pictures of the assailants?  Why would we do that?"

President Barack Obama’s nominee to head the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division led the group that represents convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal.

BUFFALO, NY—The United States Attorney’s Office announced today that three members of Local 17 of the International Union of Operating Engineers pleaded guilty before United States District Judge William M. Skretny to violations of the federal Hobbs Act Extortion statute and agreed to testify in the upcoming trial of their seven co-defendants.

Part of the QotD:   I was never against having guns for shooting ranges, I am against them as means of self-defense (or freedom).

Popehat REALLY wants to burn it to the ground.

Why you're not Officer Friendly anymore(Reason #422)

This gentleman violently inserted his finger into dozens of victims' anuses. Sometimes his friends held guns to the victims' heads to force them to comply. Why was he sentenced to just two years in prison? Because he was an officer with the Milwaukee police department!
...
Vagnini's fellow gang members got off with even lighter punishments, including a year of paid vacation and a polite request to resign from the police deparment.
Every one of these bastards should've been fired, and any supervisor who could be shown to have known about this, all the way up.

Because reading your e-mail and recording your phone calls just isn't enough, the NSA also vandalizes and commits computer crimes.

So, the NYEffingTimes goes all-out to try to protect Clinton.  And gets called on it.

Speaking of sorry excuses for lawmen, the US Border Patrol seems to be going for a title.
Maybe they need snappier hats to wear when they're saying "Papers, please."

Interesting; tribal PDs can't just do whatever the hell they want in this:
What good came of the eight-year legal battle besides the cash? Bressi points out that the Tohono O'odham Police Department is in tribal Native American grounds and therefore have been operating under the assumption of immunity from federal civil rights laws. Bressi's victory in the 9th Circuit limits, if not prohibits, tribal police from hiding behind sovereign immunity while seizing people at internal checkpoints along state highways.

Now the line is "If you laugh at Pajama Boy, you hate Jews and women!"
Really getting desperate and nasty, aren't they?

Ten Constitutional violations by Obama.

You've probably seen something about this power-station attack.  Winner line is
A shooter “could get 200 yards away with a .22 rifle and take the whole thing out,” Wellinghoff said last month at a conference sponsored by Bloomberg.
Well, since Wellinghoff doesn't specify an EBR feeding magnum .22 bullets from a high-bullet-capacity clip magazine, we have to assume he's talking about a .22lr.  Which means he's full of shit.

Don't know about you, but once a friend and I used the side of an old gas stove as a target backing, and found that a .22 rifle could put a whole bunch of shots in a very small area and not penetrate that thin sheet steel.  At all.  Which means that it's sure-hell not going to penetrate even thin sheet metal(unless you count aluminum foil) at 200 yards.

Of course it is possible he's talking about something else in .22-caliber; which makes him guilty of very unclear wording(I know, shut up) or lack of thought before speaking.  Unless[conspiracy hat on] he wanted to make people think the evil .22 long rifle can do that![/ch off]

I have GOT to read the Curmudgeon more

I read what he said, the actual interview. It’s not particularly crazy and all of his ideas are generations old. You’d have to have live in a bubble to miss exposure to his ideas; which, of course, many people have done. Further he’s not actively interfering with anyone. He’s not tracking my phone, regulating my food, mucking around with my health insurance, auditing my taxes, bitching about my guns, pissed that I don’t attend church, or spending my money. Thus I’m perfectly happy with whatever he says. His method appears to be leading by example. Such an excellent approach! The world would indeed be a better place if more people thought deeply about sin and the avoidance thereof and then acted accordingly. Which was the whole point.

Ahem: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAA!
A Greenpeace campaigner claims he was forced to live on bread and water while being held in a Russian prison because it didn’t offer a vegetarian alternative.

Why are they remaking 'Starship Troopers'?

Um, because it was a miserable stinking piece of shit?
For which Heinlein probably wanted to crawl out of his grave and kill the bastards responsible?

Got some of the mess in here straightened out, and one of the things

I discovered was how damn many books I have that I haven't been able to get to yet.

Not counting the ones I'm working on now.

I'll never catch up.

But there are worse things than always having another one to read.

"The ice is MELTING!"

Except it's not.
A scientific mission ship, trapped in dense pack ice off East Antarctica, is still awaiting rescue after a Chinese icebreaker failed to reach it.

The Snow Dragon icebreaker was itself stalled by heavy ice, officials say.

It had been trying to cut a path through the ice in order to help the research vessel reach open water.
And remember, it's summer down there.  Makes you wonder what Winter will be like.

Ever have the thought that becoming a lawyer should be considered evidence of guilt?  Greed, chicanery, criminal-level assholery, take your pick.
A plaintiff's lawyer is suing a medical journal and two doctors because they published a case report that makes it harder to win birth-injury lawsuits.
...
Now the National Law Journal reports that a Boston lawyer who claims to have debunked the Lerner-Salamon case study has sued its two authors, the journal's publisher, and Dr. Salamon's clinic for publishing and refusing to retract it. The attorney's clients are two families whose lawsuits did not succeed, allegedly because of the case report; he thinks they deserve $3 million each.

No wonder a lot of the nut-level feminists hate her guts.
She starts by pointing to the diminished status of military service. "The entire elite class now, in finance, in politics and so on, none of them have military service—hardly anyone, there are a few. But there is no prestige attached to it anymore. That is a recipe for disaster," she says. "These people don't think in military ways, so there's this illusion out there that people are basically nice, people are basically kind, if we're just nice and benevolent to everyone they'll be nice too. They literally don't have any sense of evil or criminality."

The results, she says, can be seen in everything from the dysfunction in Washington (where politicians "lack practical skills of analysis and construction") to what women wear. "So many women don't realize how vulnerable they are by what they're doing on the street," she says, referring to women who wear sexy clothes.
...
Sex education, she says, simply focuses on mechanics without conveying the real "facts of life," especially for girls: "I want every 14-year-old girl . . . to be told: You better start thinking what do you want in life. If you just want a career and no children you don't have much to worry about. If, however, you are thinking you'd like to have children some day you should start thinking about when do you want to have them. Early or late? To have them early means you are going to make a career sacrifice, but you're going to have more energy and less risks. Both the pros and the cons should be presented."
Personal gripe, connected to the 'blaming the victim!' crap she catches from such 'sexy clothes' points:  Point out that while you SHOULD be able to run around dressed and acting as you choose that dressing like a porn actress or hooker in some places/times is a bad idea and "YOU'RE BLAMING THE VICTIM!" starts.  Closely followed by "WHY DON'T YOU TEACH YOUR SONS NOT TO RAPE?"  bullshit.  These idiots, consciously or not, seem to have lost their grip on reality.

And I get really, really sick of me and son being blamed for what anti-social assholes(whom the nut-level feminists helped create) do.

It's a given that Waxman is a gun-bigot asshole who'll say anything to try and ban firearms.  I have to figure they've got no actual evidence of 'military-style weapons' or it'd be lead story on every "Let's help the Democrats" news outlet.

Also, from what two officials described as a high-powered rifle doesn't really mean squat unless your definition of 'high-powered' is "Whatever I want it to be."  Remember Ted Kennedy insisting the .30-30 be considered armor-piercing because 'it can shoot through a 700-pound safe' ?

'All cultures are equal' my ass.
In 2009 the leader of The Gambia, the self-titled Sheikh Professor Dr. Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh—perhaps best known for being the inventor of an herbal HIV “cure”—launched a witch-hunting campaign. Police, army, and national intelligence agents kidnapped up to 1,000 people at gunpoint. They were taken to secret detention centers and severely beaten, almost to the point of death. They were forced to confess and to drink “potions.” At least two died from potion-induced kidney failure.

Self-appointed witch hunter and self-described “Lady Apostle” Helen Ukpabio recently launched a crusade she calls “Witches on the Run” in Nigeria. The Observer reports that accused children in the country are “burnt, poisoned, slashed, chained to trees, buried alive or simply beaten and chased off into the bush.” Some have had nails driven into their heads. Ukpabio is helping to fuel this rampant child abuse.
